Why do I suck so bad at Destiny PVP?

Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it. Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty. Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE. So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta. Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table). p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

  • I notice that i thrive in familiar maps. That single handedly made a difference. There's still a few like asylum where i just hope to get lucky. My k/d is really bad too. About .9 averaged between my 2 characters. Last and only time iplayed pvp before this was halo 2 so don't feel too bad. Learn maps. Also, sometimes? It's just itme for you to play your part for the team and let them do their job. Matchmaking doesn't seem to exist in destiny(i DO remember playing the top ranked pvp guy once, that should never have happened), so with taht said, just your oponents and see whats doing after a few run ins. You will quickly find out if you are being headshotted from distance and their general awarness, knowledge of the terrain, and raw skill is far higher. These are times i use to explore the place while avoiding the red blips.Usually control goes down and just cycles between 2 differenct "choke points" or kill boxes. Steer clear and learn the map. Then leave fireteam AFTER THE MATCH and come back. Might find yourself with a crowd that's more along you skill level? I'm just a mid 30s scrub on a video game so i have little to offer. Practice does indeed help.Take on thorn no matter how bad you are, you WILLget better. Plus, shhhhhhh, thorn is so ridiculously fun to use its like cheating, i said shhhhhhh keep that part quiet lol Good luck man Ambien typing. Normal posts found everywhere else but heretonight

  • Ok just as sirt of a credential thing im in the top 3% of kills in destiny and the top 7% overall. The best peice of advice i can give is to watch your radar, make sure you have the right weapon for the range, and finaly dont think of them as people. The flavor text for tgorn puts it about as perfectly as words can get, people are stupid and will get greedy and do stupid things, more often than not all you have to do is run from them and theylle follow, you can easily bait them into a situation were you have the advantage or if they dont follow then at least you arent dead.

  • Positioning is everything in this game. If you get the first round off, 9/10 times you win. Learn the maps, learn the kill zones, and don't be afraid to back off on a 1 vs 2 and you'll be fine. OR Get the last word, thorn, or mythlocast and wreck everything a lot easier.

  • After being garbage, then sucking, to now not sucking so often, I think map knowledge is most important. Even without headshots and crouching, you can rank up many frags just by knowing where you are and where they are coming from/to before they do.

  • 1. Learn the maps (traffic flow/choke points & what direction ppl can shoot you from) 2. Check radar every 2 secs 3. Go for headshots 4. Spec armor & shield regen 5. Understand that shield is like 80% of your life. No shield generally means 1 melee hit away from death 6. Pick guns with good impact, stability, & range 7. Crouch to make yourself harder to detect on radar 8. Headshots, headshots, headshots

IMO, the single most important thing is to know every nook and cranny of every map available. It'll help read your radar more clearly, help with strafing shootouts and running backwards out of trouble. Plus there's "hotspots" on every map. Find those. Secondly, slow the game down and master your own playstyle. Are you mid range? Run and shotgun? Or a sniper camper? Ect, ect. I guess my only other advise is to tell you that it's never bad to turn and run from unfavorable situations, it's not bad to be solo supered, and get heavy ammo every time it's up. Record some games where you do poorly and see what you could do differently. And save some games you did well to see how you could do better. I actually watch a lot of YouTube videos of people playing and it helps.

  • It seems you're going with what looks like frantic gameplay. Slow it all down and hit those headshots. Keep a good distance and don't mix it up until you're comfortable. Knowing maps is HUGE! Keep playing and you'll get super used to em.

  • Most important rule is know the maps. Learn the high traffic areas. Guns are a personal preference. If you have a titan use the helm of Saint 14 and a bubble with armor of light. You can panic it when you're getting shot and stay alive.

  • Cause everyone in pvp uses exotics like last word, suros, and thorn and that out guns every legendary out there. If you want to win fight fire with fire buddy. Panic supers, op exotics, and camp with shotguns or use blink while using a shotgun. The one I hate most is when people use plan c lol omg I lose my shit
