Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it.
Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty.
Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE.
So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table).
p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

4 RepliesEdited by Kenobi Trice: 2/22/2015 4:49:28 AM1. Head shots are King. ALWAYS go for head shots when in midrange engagements. It seems obvious, but trust me it helps. This isn't like you're average CoD where whoever get's the first shot in wins. Most of your gunfights boil down to who is getting head shots. 2. Make sure you take the right PvP weapons with you. Basically, you'll need a decent impact high stability auto rifle. Up For Anything, Vanquisher VIII, and Do Gooder V are great examples. (Edit: With the next update, other weapons will become a little bit more viable) 3. Learn what things to watch out for when playing against certain classes. Titans with shoulder charge are a pain but way easy to counter. If you know they're coming you can jump and dodge the charge while readying your gun, or simpy get to high ground. Listen for the noise that indicates a hunter's super has been activated. It is extremely distinctive an has saved my life multiple times. Your best option when you hear a hunter activating their super is to run away and cut your losses. Warlocks, surprisingly, seem to be best engaged at medium to long ranges, as their melees activate shields and has an extreme long range. 4. Never quit. I'm not going to start some inspirational speech here, but you really just need to play this game's PvP for a while until you get used to the ropes of the new system, especially since your last shooter was Marathon. Edit: Had some grammatical issues that I cleared.

Some tips

mostly because you probably haven't recieved any super OP crucible weapons yet seeing that you're highest character is a level 28, oh and use a long range shotgun, that'll help

Coming from a mediocre player. I asked a pro for a tip like this as well in the Halo 2 days. He said, "Figure out how to not die. The kills will come." Best advice I've ever received. People will not mind someone going 6 and 4 because you were positive. That KD is much better than a 12 and 16. Eventually, you will be able to have those games where you do really well but I typically hover just over a 1.0 KD ratio. It makes the crucible much more enjoyable.

1 ReplyI recently realized I was rushing into situations without really thinking about it. Also when I forget to keep my eyes on the radar I die more often obviously. I slowed down a bit and stopped rushing around. I also remember to keep my eyes on radar so I can react to any given situation with the appropriate weapon. My k/d over the last few days has gone up quite a bit. Being cognizant of my surroundings and radar has helped. You almost have to retrain your brain. Some people are naturals others need to put it more work like me.

Look everywhere all the time
-
Keep playing, get frustrated as hell, then play more. It is all about learning from your mistakes and practicing.
-
Be a Radar whore!
-
Radar. Map knowledge and awareness. Headshots. That is all.
-
Don't use blink.. Often times blink will leave you more confused than your enemy. Try crouching or going invisible to disappear from radar.
-
Looks like you are in the middle... That's good. "Because I am too" lol
-
Because you're a scrubby dub dub.
-
You play pvp? Oh you mean the lag switch fest excuse of a pvp.

Who necro bumped this?

Because of stupid shotties and fisties!

Use red death tell they nurf it
-
Use suros
-
Alright I honestly didn't read all of that, but its just something that takes practice to get good at. You need to remember all parts of the map and learn when to rush in and when not to rush in. And try changing your sensitivity so that you can gradually get a stead finger when aiming for the head.

The one shot potential in this game is unreal, so don't expect to have skill involved in Crucible

1 ReplyCould be lag or could be whatever "lag compensation" Bungie enforces or how Bungie has hosting done in PvP. I've had games where I went 22 Kills 3 Deaths (K:D of 7.3) and was death incarnate. The games before and after my K:D was 0.3. Why that happened I have no idea. Bungie still will not come clean and explain how PvP is done in Destiny. I've heard that it's server based and other people have implied that it's some mixture of Server and P2P based system. And don't forget that In Crucible, Bungie nerfs all the weapons, armour and abilities to "balance" it. What that means, we have no idea, but I have had my but kicked by a Level 2 player with a rare scout rifle when I was a level 31 Titan using Exotic weapons. I prefer Iron Banner simply because of this levelling crap. Lastly, when you die, check the player list and see what everyones internet status is. You'll find that players that have red bars tend to have the highest K:D - having poor internet seems to be the best way to become "good" at Crucible.
