Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it.
Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty.
Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE.
So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table).
p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

Use cheap weapons.
shotguns, thorn, etc.
Use cheap moves.
blade dance, blink to shotgun
Use "panic supers" as their called at only the best opportunity.
3 or more people grouped together, waiting to be destroyed.
There is a YouTube channel called true vanguard that is pretty good. Gear is really important, you generally want high impact or high stability weapons and pick perks that are more powerful against single targets. Stay out of shotgun range.

Step 1. Choose your subclass... I see u have two titans so switch between defender and striker to see which one u like better (i don't have a Titan yet so I don't really know which is better) Step 2. Max out your toughness with the subclass... Towards the right side of the tree switch it up so that u have one with "training focused on toughness at all costs" and one with either "training focused on toughness and speed" or "toughness and recovery" (I use recovery) Step 3. Decide your primary weapon... If u like hand cannons choose a hand cannon, if u like scout rifles choose a scout rifle, etc. I will say that between pulse rifle and a auto rifle pulse rifles R more effective due to the fact that they have a pretty high rate of fire and U can get more accuracy. Those head shots count a lot. Between hand cannons and scout rifles I wouldn't know cuz I don't really use them but if your gonna choose a hand cannon I would say choose one with a high mag size. Step 4. Choose a secondary weapon... U should choose one that compliments your primary... For instance, if u have a scout rifle which is very long range U should choose a shotgun as your secondary, same with hand cannons, but if u have a pulse or auto rifle as your primary choose a sniper or fusion rifle. I would say that any combos work pretty well if your good with both weapons. But don't choose scout rifle wih sniper cuz that won't work out the well. Step 5. Choose your heavy... If u don't have a rocket launcher with proximity or the exotic launched Truth U should probably use a machine gun. Even if u have a rocket launcher with regular tracking it won't be enough for crucible cuz guardians R very small and very fast. I would say use a machine gun that has a perk "kills with this weapon grant bonus ammo" because heavy ammo drops very rarely and it's even more rare you'll actually pick it up. Step 6. Gameplay strategies... This step is going to be longer than any of the others so bare with me if u even made it this far. I am going to explain strategies for every crucible mode (my favorites R control and clash and when it comes around, combined arms) if u r playing control I strongly recommend u use a shotgun and here whether U go striker or defender doesn't matter cuz they both work for u. For instance let's say u go to capture an enemy zone and U don't want anyone shooting at U while u do it, just pop your bubble and dance away. Or let's say u go stop someone from capturing one of your zones, except there r three guys there, a quick fist of havoc (i think it's called) and u get an easy triple down. The shotgun will come in handy for when u don't have a super ready and its a slightly less easy triple down. But now a more generalized strategy: capture every zone that's not blue. This will not only give u 75 points for standing still and doing nothing, this will give your team an extra 100 points for every kill after U have captured it. Also any blue zone U see turning red on the outside, run in there and pop a couple shotgun rounds to stop it. Clash:I would say go with a sniper or fusion rifle for clash and find a good sniping spot if using a sniper. Then after U snipe somebody wait like 5 secs and change your sniping spot, U do this cuz they see your snipin spot in their killer cam and they respawn by 5 secs R up. If your using a fusion rifle, tho, stay with at least one other person and kill everyone U see. Whenever u get killed by a sniper, go to their sniping spot and kill them. I'm srry but I'm tired now I'll do the other two in the morning but I hope what I have so far helps :)

Find out what works for you on different maps. Watch other people and analyze why that other person killed you and play like them
-
Use blink and a shotgun. You'll fit right in...

If your aways worry about dying your not going to win. Weapons armor and perks are important it can give you edge what's good in pve maybe useless in pvp. Learn what weapons works for you and the best in that class. Right now a good pulse rifle is good to start with.
-
Try using weapons that have recently received a buff lately. Pulse rifles for example. Bad Juju and Red Death are some of the best weapons to use right now, as is the thorn and my favorite sniper, the fellwinters lie. Strategy. Only go into battles you are either sure you will win or you are sure you are helping your team with. Pay attention to the tactics and maneuvers your enemies use and try to work them around and use them against them. I will edit this when i come up with more.

7 Repliesfirst off, props for actually speaking up asking for help unlike most. :) the best advice i could give for someone trying to get better would be to pay attention to your radar. its basically the guy fighting next to you, get to know it and itll be your best friend(im assuming you know how to read it already). next is playing conservatively. this means hang back, watch your radar, and wait for the enemy to come to you. stay close to teammates the best you can. theyll be bullet magnets as well as extra firepower. remember this game is a team effort, two guys throwing paper bullets against one man with any gun and the two will win. next is dont be an idiot. this may seem like common sense but its a reason to be pissed off at teammates for. basically keep aware and dont be afraid to run. if you see two guys round a corner and youre alone, gtfo. its simple, play to your advantage. if youre playing skirmish or any snall team ganetype stay with your group. dont be leroy jenkins charging in paying no attention to your team. get to know the maps and learn to defend choke points in a way that suits you. if your teammate is watching one hallway then watch another that you think an enemy will come from. alot of fights are decided before they start. learn spawns and take note of where everyone is. if you can predict where an enemy will spawn then mix in their strategy, theyll literally walk right into your sights. thats the basics of cruciable. if you still need help then feel free to shoot me a message and ill be glad to help. good luck gaurdian.

The trick is being aware. Look up TrueVanguard's youtube channel he has great tips. Also look at gameplay and streams of top players and try to mirror it

5 RepliesAlright. I am no pro here. I've played the crucible for quite a while now and I'll give us some tips I picked up. 1. Don't use blink. As fun as it is and as powerful as you think it is, if your not experience with it, don't use it. It'll leave you more confuse then your enemies. Once you get the hang of the crucible, try going on patrol or some area in PVE with blink, play around and you'll eventually get use to it and know how to control it. 2. Watch. The. Radar. Okay, here's a funny little story, when I first started playing, I didn't know what the radar was. Well I did but I just didn't use it. USE IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!! Remember, if there on the outer ring, there getting close to you. If it's filled in one segment of your radar, there close. And if it's in the center, there right next to you. Also remember, solid red means there on the same elevation as you. Semi- red means here on a different elevation (like down stairs or up stairs or down the hill or up the hill) 3. Stick with teammates as much as possible. You watch there back and they watch yours. It's nice to have some buddies to go to the crucible with you because you can communicate. 4. Heavy ammo control. Heavy weapons here can change the game. Personally, I will always choose machine gun over rockets in the crucible, rockets might get you 2-3 kills but machine guns can get you far more. I also prefer high impact low fire rate machine guns. Like "against all odds". Honestly the best crucible machine gun there is. 4 shots and your out. Heavy spawns at around the 9 minute mark and he 6 minute mark. That could change depending on how long the heavy ammo sits there without people picking it up. 5. Use correct weapons. Don't try to shoot a hand cannon across the map. Don't try to shoot your auto rifle when your enemy is i front of your face. Use the right weapons. Auto rifles are good for mid range. Scouts are good for long range. Your secondary also comes into play here, shotguns are great for short range. Use those to your advantage. 6. Don't hug onto your secondary the whole game. Shotguns are a defensive weapon. Don't run around killing people with it. If they come to you, use your shotgun. But you don't run up to them with one. Also, don't hug onto fusion rifles the whole game. Not only is this considered a really cheap way to get kills, it's not really fun for really anyone and it ruins the experience for us all. 7. Take cover. If your taking some type of damage, something is watching. Even if it's a tick of damage and you manage to move out of the way, there still there and watching. Take cover and be careful. Crouching will make you blink on the radar every 5 seconds. So basically, if an enemy is walking up to you, it will show a solid red. But if your crouch, it will block solid red every 5 seconds. 8. Get team objectives. If killing isn't your thing in the crucible, helping the team will always help. Not only does it help your team, it also gets your score up! 9. Relax and focus. Don't stress over it too hard and don't take it too lightly. You want to sit back and relax, but have your mind focus so you can stay sharp in the crucible. 10. Be stealthy. No matter what class you are, stay stealthy. Don't stand in the open for too long. This sounds pretty obvious but I can't tell you how many times I've seen people just casually standing around in the middle of no where waiting to be spotted. Imagine it as hide and seek. Don't stand in the opening thinking which way to go, run! Run to a wall, crouch near a wall, walking around slowly and keep an eye on the radar! Again, I'm no pro here, but here are 10 tips that I have for you :)

How to use blink. You blink in the direction you are facing. Blink is more or less an ambush tactic. Your defense is dramatically lowered during blink. As soon as you blink, start turning towards the direction you wish to go or aim. Never, EVER, try to make a long jump with blink. On the flip side, if you're falling a long distance, before you hit the ground blink and you will avoid damage.
combo blink with shotgun. Best advice.
Its a hard learning curve. I feel your pain

Stay mid range. Train yourself by using a hand cannon. You should never die to a shotgun. If you do, adjust your strategy or avoid that route.

Because f*ck u Jk bro it's because u fail at video games i pathetic b*tch still jk bruh

It's hard to get good with everyone running around with shot guns on such small maps you just gotto get use to it

4 RepliesEdited by Kenobi Trice: 2/22/2015 4:49:28 AM1. Head shots are King. ALWAYS go for head shots when in midrange engagements. It seems obvious, but trust me it helps. This isn't like you're average CoD where whoever get's the first shot in wins. Most of your gunfights boil down to who is getting head shots. 2. Make sure you take the right PvP weapons with you. Basically, you'll need a decent impact high stability auto rifle. Up For Anything, Vanquisher VIII, and Do Gooder V are great examples. (Edit: With the next update, other weapons will become a little bit more viable) 3. Learn what things to watch out for when playing against certain classes. Titans with shoulder charge are a pain but way easy to counter. If you know they're coming you can jump and dodge the charge while readying your gun, or simpy get to high ground. Listen for the noise that indicates a hunter's super has been activated. It is extremely distinctive an has saved my life multiple times. Your best option when you hear a hunter activating their super is to run away and cut your losses. Warlocks, surprisingly, seem to be best engaged at medium to long ranges, as their melees activate shields and has an extreme long range. 4. Never quit. I'm not going to start some inspirational speech here, but you really just need to play this game's PvP for a while until you get used to the ropes of the new system, especially since your last shooter was Marathon. Edit: Had some grammatical issues that I cleared.
