Audio Bug: Game Chat routes to Controller (Headset Channel) instead of HDMI/Speakers

I am experiencing an issue where Destiny 2 incorrectly identifies a standalone microphone as a full headset, causing all Fireteam and Team Chat to be routed to the controller's audio jack instead of the TV/HDMI speakers. The Problem: While the Xbox system is set to 'Headset & Speakers,' (I also tried just ‘Speakers’) Destiny 2 pulls the voice chat stream away from the HDMI output. Because I am using a standalone microphone (no headphones attached to the controller), I can see player’s speaker icons lighting up, but I cannot hear them. Steps Taken: I have verified Xbox system settings and attempted to 'Reset to Default' in the game's Sound menu. There is currently no 'Voice Output' toggle in the Xbox version of Destiny 2 to manually force audio back to the speakers. ***Request: Can Bungie investigate adding a manual 'In-game Voice Chat Output setting' toggle for console players, or improve the hardware handshake logic so it doesn't hijack audio when no speaker impedance is detected? This would allow users to use microphones without having to wear a headset. Thank you!

  • Hey there, Thank you for reaching out A few things to try on Xbox that often straighten this out: Check Xbox output & chat settings Settings → General → Volume & audio output Under Speaker audio, confirm your HDMI/TV setup looks correct. Under Additional options / Chat mixer / Party chat output (wording can vary slightly by dashboard version), make sure it’s set to Headset & Speakers or Speakers as you prefer. Unplug / disable anything the console might see as a headset If you have any adapter, dongle, or mic attachment on the controller, try removing it and restarting the console. Test Destiny 2 again with just the controller + TV audio. In‑game Destiny 2 audio checks From the Character screen: open Settings → Sound. Make sure Voice Chat is enabled and not muted. If you’re using Xbox party chat, confirm you’re not “muted to game chat” at the system level.
