Crucible is in fact tilted.

Recently I finished the latest Iron Banner and got all the new weapons, etc. Now I am playing Crucible to get the catalyst for the Witherhoard grenade launcher and to work through the other seasonal quests. I still enjoy the Crucible, and range from 10 to 20 kills per match, which is actually a downturn from the SBMM era. My success depends on how many elite players are in the match or whether I'm trying to use unfamiliar weapons to pursue bounties. With this experience, I feel I can finally add a useful comment about the state of the Crucible. First, matchmaking is in fact not good. While there are not as many mercy endings to matches as I'd heard, there are actually not that many matches that are close. So that's a bit of a drag, but not a fatal flaw. Also, there aren't that many three stacks from clans as I'd heard about, but there are almost invariably two or more players who are Flawless, Unbroken or other such elite players in every match. The reason seems to be because of a miscalculation on part of the developers. Even though players of this calibre supposed to be less than 2% of all players, they play far more hours than casual players who drop in and out of the game. This means that though there are far less elite players, it's likely you will run into one or more in each match, so it doesn't work out to seeing them only 2% of the time. It happens, in fact, a lot more often. And all it takes is a few elite players to tilt the match quite badly. As for CBMM making matchmaking quicker, really, it's not all that noticeable. I used to connect almost as fast last season, so the big change from SBMM is not the wonderful thing it was made out to be. I think this is because of server issues which are neutering the positive effects of CBMM. These issues are also probably why so many players are dropping in the middle of a match (a problem made worse by players rage quitting too, usually when the match starts to turn into a stomping). Also until this season I hadn't seen much evidence of cheating-like behavior in the Crucible (I'm on PS4), but now there's all sorts of dodgy things happening in matches. Invulnerable players, players who suddenly skitter across the map, etc. Sever issues? Cheating? But too common no matter what. And don't get me started on the rewards of gear and such in PvP, which are lackluster, to say the least. Especially the last Iron Banner, which gave so little back from all the grind. I got exactly three pieces of gear with mediocre stats for the entire IB when turning in tokens (not counting the IB quest rewards). So yeh, so exciting... I had thought about not commenting about all this, making yet another negative Crucible post, but people have to speak out. I will still play PvP because I just shrug when things go badly, but since I like Destiny, I don't want people to give up on the game. Take care all.

  • Well thought out and written thread. Just makes me sad Bungie will never look at it since they seem to only listen to streamers and content creators more often than not. D: Maybe contact one of them who are sympathetic to wanting CBMM gone or fixed. Who knows what'll come of it.

  • One thing That has always been a problem with matchmaking is lobby balancing where the skill distribution can be quite uneven. I think this is one of the contributing factors to lopsided games. I’ve found the connection to be pretty good for me at most times of the day, but it can be a little twitchy when I’m playing into the early hours of the morning. This isn’t unusual with multiplayer games. I’ve seen maybe 2-3 people badly lagging since the changes, and I mean teleporting all over the place and kills not registering until a couple of seconds after the final blow was struck. For the most part I’ve not come across too many full teams, duos and trios mostly who seemed like buddies just playing rather than people trying to stomp. In quick play I’ve had matches against maybe 5 full teams in all the time I’ve solo queued. Matched 4 guys with the flawless seal this morning who were absolutely dripping with sweat running full meta, which, personally I think is a little sad, but whatever. I like the experience I’ve been having, it’s been a mixed bag of results and of different player types. Some games I have to play it of my skin to do well and some I can get away with running off meta stuff like 340 autos, 180 HCs or 150 scouts. I’m liking sidearms and the ikelos smg instead of special weapons. After all this time with SBMM it’s a breath of fresh air. However, I’m a relatively experience player, not top tier, but certainly well above average. For me it’s a mixed bag of casual matches and hard fought sweaty affairs, which is great. For someone at the opposite end to me, it’s probably feeling like the MLG finals every game. We need somewhere for them to get a casual experience too, for the long-term health of PvP. My idea is a training ground playlist where there’s no real incentive for sweaty players to go, with solo queue and SBMM. You can do quests and bounties, but no stats are tracked on your character. Now obviously we still want people to play regular quickplay too, so to incentivize this, quick play would offer better rewards, unique loot, faster quest progression and improved XP earn rates. You would also still need quick play for pinnacles.

    • Well thought out and written post. The only thing I would say is that I found mercy rules far more common in IB versus standard QP control. I completely agree with your assessment of cheaters on console. Yesterday I shoulder charged a warlock, melee 2 additional times, then emptied a full clip of Suros Regime as this individual (Flawless by the way) captured a zone. This was at point blank range and they were not moving or taking any damage. After the zone was captured they activated their super and killed me instantly. Reported for cheating. I have no confidence anything will be done about it.

    • I topped scored on the losing team a couple of weeks ago.... I got 3 kills. Those that think that nothing is wrong are delusional.

      • You still only find the top 2% very rarely. The takeaway you should have gotten is that maybe you’re not as good as you thought and the top 25% can stomp you just as well as the top 2%.
