I'm a 619 power Titan and I consider myself a "casual hobbyist" in Destiny 2. I play one or two hours a day, do my Challenges but haven't done the raids sinds Forsaken, nor am I able to complete the forges at this point.
In year one of D2 part of the fun of this "casual endgame" for me was creating and min/maxing several builds for my Titan. I'd have my max mobility Striker, my max resistance Saint-14 support Sentinel, my "max class ability reload speed"-build with Crest of Alpha Lupi, my max recovery Iron Banner gear, etc...
In the weeks leading up to Forsaken I was looking forward to the sandbox changes with random rolls, and the grind to get the optimum build. Of course, since year 2 all my old builds would become useless anyway. During the "transition week" I noticed different resources were needed for infusion, but I didn't really mind that because those resources could be easily grinded for.
Unfortunately the new Masterwork / Enhancement Core economy destroyed this part of the endgame for me. I'm unable to get enough Enhancement Cores to keep multiple builds at a decent power level, so besides a dedicated Crucible build and a "Dreaming City" build I usually just fall back to my "max power" set which is an ugly jumble of random armour pieces. Maintaining multiple builds is just impossible with this economy.
Up until this day I still don't understand the added value of requiring Enhancement Cores for infusion other than a stupid way to stimulate people to use different kinds of weapons and armor. And no, Bungie, the problem was never that the name "Masterwork Core" caused confusion. People simply didn't understand why this arbitrary restriction was imposed when it didn't impact the actual max power level increase.
Moreover, armour sets like the Iron Banner armour set have become pretty much useless. What's the use in equipping the Iron Banner set if it puts me at a disadvantage? Why would I want to use the Dawning armour set if it costs me at least 15 Enhancement Cores to get it up to a useful level and then a lot more to keep it at max level during the dawning?
If you've paid any attention since Forsaken you'll notice more and more people have stopped caring about their appearance and are instead just slapping on any new gear they get, perhaps applying at least a shader to make it fit a little. Also it's very rare to see people with Masterworked Weapons or Armour because the costs of Masterworking has increased, yet there is no incentive to Masterwork anything until you have reached the level cap.
I think the problem is the choice to switch to this economy was once again backed by a clinical theory without thinking about the broader repurcussions. I get that it "increases the meaningfulness of infusing a weapon" but is that increase in meaningfulness worth all the additional irritation that it causes among Guardians that aren't grinding for hours a day?
So, to recap, the new Enhancement Core economy has had these negative impacts:
• Maintaining multiple armour builds at high power has become impossible except for die-hards.
• "Fashion" in Destiny 2 is disincentivized.
• There is less incentive to masterwork your weapons and armour while the costs have increased.
The positive changes were:
• Increased meaningfulness of Masterworking
• Incentivise trying out different kinds of weapons.
• Add some synthetic grind (not sure if this is positive).
So, I would like to propose a compromise.
Reduce or remove the Enhancement Core requirement for infusing armour. Reducing it to 1 EC would help, but preferably I'd see it removed. Another compromise is to reduce it to 1 EC but remove the requirement for infusions that don't increase power to a meaningful degree (up to, say, 20 levels below max power). Either way it's already possible to just pull Exotics from the collection at 20 levels below max power and infuse these without ECs anyway.
As for weapons, I don't mind the requirements there as much, but I wouldn't mind seeing the requirements decreased there as well, especially considering the steep Masterwork costs.
I hope Bungie will read this and take my proposal to heart. I really hope I can get back into building my optimised armour sets some day without having to grind for Enhancement Cores or having to log in just to take my daily trip to the Spider to get my "fix".

I think that enhancement cores should be for masterworks only
-
I just wish the shards and glimmer went down. I have 150 cores no big deal. And the world materials. I have to do mass currency exchanges with spider often.
-
3 RepliesI mean, I'm 650 on all my characters and it took me about 2 weeks. I'm now at a point where I have nothing to do and no real reason to play destiny, would you rather be in that situation? lol

1 Reply"We have heard your feedback, so we will be making the following change: Enhancement Cores will be renamed to Infusion Cores to better reflect their new purpose" I love Bungie, but I had to make that joke.

Bungievision don't want players to max out their gear, because they have this strange and bizarre notion that we will stop playing once we max out our gear. I don't know about the rest of you, but I for one think once my gear is maxed out is when I feel like I'm _actually_ playing the game, and not just grinding for gear in order to play the game. Of course, I've yet to max out a single set of armor or even guns in D1 or D2 because Bungievision looove moving the goal posts so that it's pretty much impossible unless you treat playing Destiny like a job *cough* streamers *cough*... and even then, it won't last. Until my gear is maxed out, I'm going to suspect that the reason why I lost in Crucible is not because my opponent was a better player, but that they simply had better gear than me maxed out and I didn't. /just kidding, it's usually because they are DDoSing PoSes ;P

Between school a relationship and work I still log enough time to have one character up to doing all the content and yea needing 3 cores to infuse up an exotic I use a lot every 10 power levels or so was brutal. I hated warmind and didn’t play that expansion so I had no cores and now I’m forced to abandon my sexy hunter armour for power which to a point I don’t mind but having the creativity removed from a lot of people isn’t really fun. I don’t agree cores should be gone but making it 1 core for infusing up an item would be a lot fairer but I could see how removing them from the cost isn’t a bad idea with how expensive masterworking an item is

Good constructive analysis and post. Agree 100%!

Edited by A_mo: 12/26/2018 3:28:46 AMTotally Agree. But for different reasons. I had something like 1200 shards when BA came out and now I have about 80 or so because I play PvP and despite the fact that I have an insane amount of total hours I had to decide to pay spider the 160 shards multiple times along with doing all the other chores just to get one more core so I could finally get my one and only character to 630 with the build that I wanted for the Forges (Which still took me until about 5 days ago). Why can't I play the game the way I want to seeing as how I play a lot and still be able to have multiple builds on my ONE character. Its just dumb and doesn't respect the amount of time put in for anyone, workers and no lifers alike... unless of course you do as you are told from on high. I made the decsion myself to start playing more PvE. I don't need Bungie to make that decsion for me. Just give me an actual reason to play it that leads to something instead of making it so that although I play 10 times more than most people I still have to jump through hoops on top of hoops in order to be able to even play the new content. There is simply no reason why with the amount of hours people like me have thrown into the bottomless pit of Destiny we should have to go to the same freaking lost sector over and over to get one more core. At least change up the lost sectors you want us to go to for christs sake. And on top of this you want me to get 50 double kills with a grenade launcher in order to get the new pinnacle weapon? Its obvious there are very few people working at this company who have taken the time to actually attempt all this. TL;DR There needs to be a better way for people to play the way they want to and still be able to have multiple builds on at least one character. My builds for PvP, Gambit, Forges, Strikes etc are all different. And I'm going to continue to play mostly PvP so if you want people to play more of the parts of the game that they don't play make it so they get some type of reward for playing the parts they play the most.

The added value is non existent. They toss out the “we want masterworking and infusion to be a meaningful choice” garbage. Which is total bullshit. They just want the added playtime it takes us to grind for cores by doing bounties. It adds at least a few hours a week to any dedicated player. Which then gets added onto the time it takes every week to do milestones for power progression. It’s a numbers game. Which is important when sales are down so they can point to numbers that say that even though sales are down, the player base that’s there is extremely invested. Which lets them think they must’ve done something right with the game and it’s just a matter of getting more people to try the game so that they too with be hooked. Again it’s bullshit. Everyone’s running around looking like shit.

28 RepliesThe core economy destroyed builds. It destroyed the relevance of having multiple armor sets. It destroyed the relevance of Eververse armor (ironically). It also destroyed the relevance of non-god rolled weapons. Because basically no one can afford the cost in cores to maintain these things. Why did Bungie do this? I think Bungie wanted to force a soft “reboot” of the game for year 2. You had pinnacle weapons from Y1 that Bungie wanted to get out of our hands, but didn’t want the PR hit that would come with a hard reboot (forcing us to leave them behind). So I believe the goal was to tell us “Hey all the Y1 gear is coming forward.” But to make doing this so god awful expensive that most people would choose to play with Y2 gear....and for those who didn’t choose this the inability to get enough cores from the game would force you to do it. But as you (and I) said, it’s come at the cost of DESTROYING parts of the game. Destroying legitimate play styles. Alienating large sections of the player base. Rendering large parts of the loot table (including EV armor skins) irrelevant.... .....and breaking the basic reward loop of the game. Instead of grinding for loot, we’ve been reduced to grinding for a number. Instead of being able to freely use the loot we’ve won from the game, at every turn we’re being forced to choose between customization...and power. Something NO OTHER SUCCESSFUL loot game forces players to do. It’s a broke system based on a bad idea that I believe had bad (manipulative) intentions.

IDK about this personally I feel the whole random roll situation on armor did this for me. Almost all of the rolls suck ass. I've played Forsaken since day 1 and -still- haven't gotten a full set of armor with rolls that I want. Here we are what 3 almost 4 months later? 's a little too much if you ask me. The enhancement cores don't really have anything to do with that in my opinion.
-
I'm confused as to why bungie did this. They added cores to Infusion. Then made them super rare. Then renamed them and gave a few more options to get them, but still not enough. And then buffed master worked gear. But made you chose between infusing gear, or running with crap that was higher light to save the cores. I want to be able to actually BUILD a load out on my titan before the end of D2.
-
The downside of the enhancement core economy: Entering the Volundr Forge with two sidearms and a linear fusion rifle because these are the highest power weapons you own and you only have 4 enhancement cores in your inventory.

Edited by PilksUK: 12/24/2018 11:12:06 AMI wear what I like the look of screw the perks and infusion system Im a midcore player and even I struggle with the grind spider bountys are boring and the scrapper ones drop rarely for me... Also why do I have to spend 8 hours a week grinding to infusion armour just to bring it up to a usable level? thats not meaningful its a game requirement.... they should be removed from infusion as I would like to grind for armour pieces with decent perks and actually enjoy the new perk system but its being held back by infusion so I will continue just to keep the armour I like the look of and ignore the new perk system the dev's spent time on due to the infusion system crippling it for me. But I agree Fashion is a big part of endgame even tho Bungie has said D2 is not that kind of game... just show Bungie has no clue... Infusion means the Fashion side of the game is dead.... Anthem bussiness model is centered around this type of endgame with a massively in depth customization system and MTA's to take it further and the MTA's cover the cost DLC (DLC is free in Anthem and paid for by MTA's remember when Bungie said Evervese was to do this!)

Same. I used to run all Heavy armor. Now not only can I not find many, but when I get them they have bad perks or I have to use it to infuse up something with better perks/mods/aesthetic. Ability scores have become all but meaningless in terms of whether you’d use your character like that.
-
Er..... Literally everything he just said.
-
I used to pride myself on getting full sets of gear and modding them to my liking. Unless I get a ridiculous amount of cores I can no longer do this and can barely even afford to keep one set powered up. Infusion being "meaningful" as they call it is stupid. With the abundance of content available and all the different rolls available to grind for, why bother wasting players time with this grind just to improve armour?
-
They even took out giving out 10 cores after a crucible glory reset

3 RepliesThe best suggestion I can say is make your everyday activity build from activity armor (strike, crucible, dreaming city, raid, gambit) because when doing those daily, and possibly weekly challenges, the powerful gear that drops will always be from those activities. The infusion cost for identical gear is only glimmer so you won't break the bank getting your gear up. There is always a chance of only getting weapons but it's still a good way of upgrading gear without cores. I myself have a set of gear for everyday use and dreaming city with a few pieces I throw on for my short time in crucible (I don't worry about the light level for these, mostly just the perks). For the dreaming city gear, don't feel like you have to use the reverie dawn gear. I hate it on my warlock because with a full set it gives you at most 2 resilience. You could throw on resilience mods but I tend to keep all my dreaming city gear equipped with Transcendent Blessing. The downside of not using the armor is: because it's a very easy armor set to level up with the multitude of daily and weekly bounties that drop the gear, you'd be missing out on getting the light level up on your gear for cheap.

5 Replies'Builds' dont make you a better player... Tnats not what the game is about
-
2 RepliesIf you are running out of cores you're not playing right.
-
This problem is almost as bad as the retards asking for 650s for gambit/crucible in lfg. If you are not even doing the forge yet then id say not even doing the new raid yet, explain the content you need to be 620+ with all your pretty 'builds' you have? I just did a 100k nightfall with 2 540s without any problem. "Builds" would be fine if you could easily change mods without losing them. This is not even really a cores problem but just more casual moaning drowning out the real problem so it never gets fixed.
-
2 RepliesEnhancement cores need to be removed all together ...I spend half my time on the game grinding out boring bounties and running all over the place for a hand full of cores that I'll burn up in 2 mins. It makes infusion and leveling up a weapon tedious and unrewarding. A friend asks me " hey wanna get a raid going?" Me " nah...I gotta grind out some more cores so I can get my raid loadout up to par" Yay!!!....so fun!!
-
2 RepliesJust eradicate cores from infusion in general. Cores for masterworking! Not infusion!
