So I decided to test and see how nonexistent Bungie's PvP matchmaking logic actually is...

I made a new/alt account and started a new guardian. Made a Warlock but that doesn't matter for this. Played the Homecoming mission and then Spark, unlocked crucible and hopped in. Quickplay, mind you. A level 4 warlock with nothing but white gear. Very first match: One guy with a Not Forgotten. My team mates weren't mentally handicapped and it was Vostok so I guess the field was more or less evened and we won the match. But the very second match: A four stack, with at least one Luna. They completely stomped us and emote'd at the end. Third match: An ongoing control match. No big teams, only a double. But I entered, as expected on the losing side. I got supered three or four times within the first thirty or fourty seconds and I had no means of fighting back because to this day, almost five years of Destiny total, you still enter ongoing matches without any super energy. Oh yeah, and there were Luna's Howls a plenty too. Next match: Fairly decent team distribution and no notable amount of pinnacle weapons. Instead all people played super sweaty and tryhard and I lost count of how many Nova Warps on the enemy team got multikills. The alarm sound of the enemy team getting power play after power play kind of made me lose count before we lost around 50 to 150 with four people in my team going negative while only one person in the opposing team was negative and one went 20.0 in KD The game after that: Ongoing control match again, score was 44 to 97. I decided I was done, for now, and bailed out. After three matches I got "breaking up those teams for better matches". And it never worked because these kinds of matches and constellations are all you get, even as a fresh player with horrible gear and no abilities to defend oneself. Bungie, Crucible is in an absolutely abysmal state. Matchmaking is just one of the issues. There are way more of them. And here you are, revealing patch notes for Black Armory entirely ignoring the immense need PvP has for quality of life improvements resulting in massive frustration only shortly after you took a few right steps with Forsaken. If you omit changes or nerf things for a reason or great master plan then you clearly failed to state or hint and reasons for your actions and should that be the case then you are making a big mistake in gambling with trust not yet fully restored. And personally, I'm sorry, but I no longer think anyone in the studio is listening. It seems to me now that you sit on your ears and only pay attention when you feel the situation gets dire. The picture I got from the forums and feedback is drastically different from the things you adress or miss to adress. It merely feels like you deliberately or accidentally smoothly move between critique and and feedback. And I think that's just indefensible given the dire situation D2 was in before Forsaken. Honestly, to this day I think Destiny in PvE and PvP has massive potential, way more than has been utilized in any content drop or QoL fix. And after so many years seeing this potential left behind unused is frustrating and irritating. I wanted to get this off my chest because, I guess at the core of it all, I like Destiny. And I like playing it. But I think that not adressing issues and problems and pretending that everything is fine does not help. Neither in the short and certainly not in the long run. • Matchmaking is beyond CBMM and SBMM. It’s just downright atrocious.

    • Bungie don't have a care in the world when it comes to crucible match making. It's been horrendous since forsaken released. I love crucible but can't summon the energy to play it at the moment.

    • With that kind of intense and thorough testing you should get a job at Bungie.

    • A couple of things about this post: - How was the connection during your games? Getting stomped sucks but getting stomped by a red bar half wit that you can’t hit was always infinitely more frustrating IMO and it feels like Bungie has done a pretty good job of limiting this through their matchmaking. I still DC occasionally and lose glory rank which frustrates me though. - I am not a streamer and no where near an elite player but the grind for the Luna’s Howl actually brought me back to this game. I hadn’t played since around the time the EP/Nodes came out because the game had become so stale with nothing to grind for. It took me about a month but I was able to get my Luna’s. Moral of the story is that all players had the opportunity to get a Luna’s Howl and even average players like myself were able to obtain one. If you chose not to then that was your prerogative. (Fun fact- I prefer using my Bygones/Telesto loadout vs my Dust Rock/Luna loadout). - Loading into games in progress has always been and always will be a joke especially when you factor in the loss of rank/streak that comes with it. The opposite in Comp is when you load in with three players or a player DCs early and the position isn’t backfilled. Black Ops does this correctly in that if you enter a game in progress you do not lose rank/points. Quickplay should mirror this. In Comp if you load a game that is 3 vs 4 the game should get placed back in queue. I don’t have a solution if someone drops mid match.

    • So you went into matches with awful gear and good perks and lost? Am I missing something?

      • I never understood why pvp is such a hype. From D1 I understood it as a place for guardians to test there weapons an skills they earned in pve. Now it has become a pve ruining game type dictating what is to op an what needs nerfed destroying great things in pve.
pvp ruined destiny
• Cliffnotes version: new and casual players get pooped on in crucible. Matchmaking and Forsaken in general is designed to cater to veterans and those who invest thier time in the game. This is not a bad thing as it incentivises veterans and newer players to become vetetans.

      • Stopped reading after the first sentence. Why? Cause SBMM doesn’t exist in Quickplay.

      • Ive said it for awhile, "breaking up teams for a better match" actually means... -putting you against a 6stack of streamers so we guarantee another loss -finding a game about to be mercied and putting you on the losing team -working hard to find a laggy lobby, hopefully one where people from Japan, Russia, Spain, Canada, and America are teamed against a 6 stack of lag-switching Mexicans

        • I had the 'breaking up teams to find a better match' recently (I was solo) it put me with a six stack all from the same clan and all of them had not forgotten. Isnt it about time we had solo queuing?

        • Let's see how long this stays in the trending list before it is removed. Bungie hates any criticism to their game. Great post.

        • I agree with many of your sentiments and those expressed below. The answer is quite simple, although not ideal. Stop playing crucible unless it’s absolutely necessary, I.e. part of an exotic quest. Once it hits home to Bungie that no-one is playing they may start to listen.

        • Lol matchmaking is a joke. I played one comp game for a clan bounty . My comp score if now 0 and I was against a team that all had not forgotten. I was in Quick play and running into.the same thing. Bungie does listen. They listen to the PvP elite and PvP streamers that can't make good vids if they play people that are actually their own skill level. They need to be matched against people that are much worse so they can do 75 kill challenges and make sick Montage videos. My ps4 kd might not even be above 1 anymore and I have been getting matched against people like nkuch. For those that are going to say get good I'm getting good on pc. When I go back to my ps4 it's hard to adjust

        • The only way to fix this is a true ranked playlist with rewards tied to each rank. Im a solid pvper. Not the best but better than your average joe. SBMM sucks for me. No one will ever be honest about this, but I love going into quickplay and demolishing the other team. I like competing against friends to see who can have the most defeats in a match. If im being honest its great crushing low skilled opponents. With true SBMM I cant do this and for what? Absolutely nothing at all. I quit pvp when they threw in skill based and Ill quit again if they do it. The only way SBMM can work is if higher tier players are going after rewards. Ill sweat all day for pinnacle weapons like luna and mountaintop but why bother in quickplay when theres no reward.

          • I'm also fed up with cheaters and hackers, lag switchers too. But as long as Activision is behind the making of any game, we will always see these issues. The only thing i recomend is to STOP playing PvP until the do something about it. To Bungie and Activision ___. Shape up or ship out. Learn how to create a proper game.

          • I mean PvP has caused problem after problem in Destiny and has never been any good but now that pinnacle weapons are a thing it makes it even worse. I'm so glad I'm moving into more PvE focused games.

          • I do not think Destiny 1 ever had this problem. I very clearly remember that the enemies you were pitched against were better selected and more fair. There were times where you would meet full teams but I can honestly say I don't recall ever seeing as many large teams (I mean 4+) as I do in D2. Is this just my case? or am I remembering wrong? I genuinely want to know your experiences.

            • In the beginning of D2 there was actually SBMM, but the streamers didn’t like that so bungie changed it. Now those streamers don’t play anymore and matchmaking is meh now.

            • Bungies solo-queue matchmaking is absolute dog shit and literally why most of my friends list quit the game well before black armory. They're not going to change it, seriously, just find a game that you actually enjoy playing. They're either incapable, incompetent, or the platform your on does not support a large enough player base to provide enjoyable matchmaking.
