So I decided to test and see how nonexistent Bungie's PvP matchmaking logic actually is...

I made a new/alt account and started a new guardian. Made a Warlock but that doesn't matter for this. Played the Homecoming mission and then Spark, unlocked crucible and hopped in. Quickplay, mind you. A level 4 warlock with nothing but white gear. Very first match: One guy with a Not Forgotten. My team mates weren't mentally handicapped and it was Vostok so I guess the field was more or less evened and we won the match. But the very second match: A four stack, with at least one Luna. They completely stomped us and emote'd at the end. Third match: An ongoing control match. No big teams, only a double. But I entered, as expected on the losing side. I got supered three or four times within the first thirty or fourty seconds and I had no means of fighting back because to this day, almost five years of Destiny total, you still enter ongoing matches without any super energy. Oh yeah, and there were Luna's Howls a plenty too. Next match: Fairly decent team distribution and no notable amount of pinnacle weapons. Instead all people played super sweaty and tryhard and I lost count of how many Nova Warps on the enemy team got multikills. The alarm sound of the enemy team getting power play after power play kind of made me lose count before we lost around 50 to 150 with four people in my team going negative while only one person in the opposing team was negative and one went 20.0 in KD The game after that: Ongoing control match again, score was 44 to 97. I decided I was done, for now, and bailed out. After three matches I got "breaking up those teams for better matches". And it never worked because these kinds of matches and constellations are all you get, even as a fresh player with horrible gear and no abilities to defend oneself. Bungie, Crucible is in an absolutely abysmal state. Matchmaking is just one of the issues. There are way more of them. And here you are, revealing patch notes for Black Armory entirely ignoring the immense need PvP has for quality of life improvements resulting in massive frustration only shortly after you took a few right steps with Forsaken. If you omit changes or nerf things for a reason or great master plan then you clearly failed to state or hint and reasons for your actions and should that be the case then you are making a big mistake in gambling with trust not yet fully restored. And personally, I'm sorry, but I no longer think anyone in the studio is listening. It seems to me now that you sit on your ears and only pay attention when you feel the situation gets dire. The picture I got from the forums and feedback is drastically different from the things you adress or miss to adress. It merely feels like you deliberately or accidentally smoothly move between critique and and feedback. And I think that's just indefensible given the dire situation D2 was in before Forsaken. Honestly, to this day I think Destiny in PvE and PvP has massive potential, way more than has been utilized in any content drop or QoL fix. And after so many years seeing this potential left behind unused is frustrating and irritating. I wanted to get this off my chest because, I guess at the core of it all, I like Destiny. And I like playing it. But I think that not adressing issues and problems and pretending that everything is fine does not help. Neither in the short and certainly not in the long run. • Could it be that the number of people playing is too low so if sbmm was on, it would take forever to find a match?

  • No. Absolutely not. SBMM is an abjectly bad archetype for MM. connection is and should be the operative factor- the skill you get matched with is RnG- if you’re a sub par player, don’t expect to slay in crucible. The low caliber players should not be pandered to.

    • The sad thing is when the level 4 guy quits because he is getting ran over by a four stack and he just got here. Bungie doesn't care though.

    • Lol this community is something else. In D1 everything had Skill based matchmaking and they bitched about every match being sweaty and laggy cause their skill is equal to some booty mcdonanalds wifi German kid. Now that we have connection based match making again people are still whining. Man just stay out the crucible please lol.

Always matched up against players 5 levels below or 5 levels higher. Based on highest level in your fireteam E.G. 20, 25, 30, 35 Matched against average level 30. Might help against pub stomping teams.

You realize that there’s not enough players to have such a variety in matchmaking? If brand new players only matched against other brand new players, they would be waiting 30 minutes to find a match

        • Stuff like this is the reason I went back to Halo 5. I decided to take a couple weeks off after the last Iron Banner, and I haven't missed Destiny's PvP at all. I can hardly force myself to play 10 games a week of Destiny PvP, but I can easily play 10 games a day of Halo and still have fun.

        • Honestly in QP some skill based matchmaking needs to apply. Just got out of a match with two professionals, one with an efficiency over 7. Both rates in top 500 in Elo. Everyone else in the lobby beside me was silver or lower. How is that right?

          • Man i get fully what you are saying but my personal experience with the MM that was in place before was terrible. The sweaty part of it was the same but i had to wait 6 to 8 mins to find a match. I actualy took down aome data of my own 25 matches before sbmm was removed in QP and 19 of 25 matches were vs a 4 stack or more. I made a post about this several months back. If they are going to bring back sbmm it needs to be better than it was before or leave as is. My personal opinion for QP is for them to fix the stacks vs solos. For me that is what mostly determines the quality of matches.

          • On the positive side, in the last week I've legitimately played comp n had 6 people in the game chat! I know right, that's crazy! It's almost like having ur mic on helps u compete against 4 stacks in an objective based game mode. It's just like that one guy whos never done the raid but says he's really good at shooting stuff so he doesn't need a mic then complains how toxic n unfair raid culture is. Smh

          • This reply section is really low, matchmaking is garbage and people tunnel on what equip he took for a random experiment. Thank god there are people who support this shit so Bungie doesn't have to move to have a half decent matchmaking. I feel blessed for having players bellow level 10 on my team and i just had a 3 man stack DC after they played 3min DM without having 1 kill.

Wait, so your test was to use a new account that had no history of your Crucible skill level, and you're surprised that you were put into all kinds of games that didn't match your now unknown skill level, even though that is how you determine one's skill level, while playing in the playlist that is supposed to not focus so much on matching by skill level? K.

              • Yea because when the season resets and everyone has near the same glory points, the matchmaking is must be broken for putting you up against someone with not forgotten. Nice logic.

                  • I've always thought Destiny has a lot of potential. Yet it seems to just miss consistently. I'm not sure wether it's Activision, Bungie, or just trying to please every single type of player. For me if Bungie had just built upon what they had with ROI it would have been better. ROI had a good mix of ways to earn gear and level up. It didn't matter if you were hardcore, casual, in a clan, or played solo. There was something for everyone to do. If they are trying to please everyone that was the way to go.

                  • Eventually even the diehard fans get sick of bungie and leave, there are not enough new people staying as the addictive quality destiny 1 had is and always has been in short supply with this shoddy sequel. Pvp was getting better towards the end of D1 but bungie completely threw that away and it has only gotten worse. Match making was always a major complaint in the forums but instead of fixing it it has only gotten worse. Bungie very obviously does not have their heart in this franchise any more, they haven’t for a long time now. I believe they just want destiny behind them as fast as possible now so they can move on to easier, more lucrative projects.

                  • It's funny how Bungie tries to make this game super accessible for newbies but do not implement stricter matchmaking. Quick play is a pub stomping grounds for stacks with Lunas and telesto. This is not healthy for newbies, nor for the people who complained about the Ace of Spades quest requiring crucible hand cannon headshots(the thumbless).
