MIDA is a Probable Reference to Marathon:

So, this is my first lore/theory post, but I was so intrigued by this possibility that I woke up at 2:00 in the morning to write this shit. If I make any glaring grammatical errors, just blame sleep deprivation. Anyways, the MIDA Multi-Tool in Destiny 2 had its previously nonexistent lore greatly expanded upon, and I couldn't help but note some similarities between it and a former Bungie series. In the lore tab, the MIDA Multi-Tool was (I'm paraphrasing since I can't copy/paste the quote) crafted by a "revolutionary government" that briefly reigned over Mars, killing 10% of the Martian population, before being overthrown. It's supposedly from another timeline, as the acronym MIDA hasn't been found in any other Golden Age relic. Now, while this sounds interesting, let me interject by saying I don't think it's at all important in terms of lore. The MIDA grimoire, as well as other exotics in D2, seems far more reference-based than story based. I don't think that Bungie would wittingly connect Destiny and Marathon's universes together, so take this theory as an obscure reference rather than a conspiracy theory. Anyways, long term Bungie fans might remember the acronym MIDA from the Marathon trilogy, where it was briefly mentioned in some of the game's terminals. Here's a direct quote describing MIDA as far as Marathon is confirmed.
The MIDA coup was afterwards criticized for its shortsightedness. In an organization that was notorious for its long ranging policies and politicking, the coup was very short-lived: MIDA never seriously accounted for the UEG's overwhelming superiority in ground forces and warships. In fact, they never attempted to take over the Marathon, which was nearing completion and would have made a very powerful weapon. The Marathon's massive size made it invulnerable to most normal space attacks, and it would have made a very stable weapons platform. After the failed coup, the leaders of MIDA were executed for their crimes, and the political organization was banned in all forms. The organization has survived as an underground terrorist organization, and remains active to this day. In its underground state, it fosters terrorism throughout Sol, and due to its spectacular funding and excellent personnel, it has grown to be one of the most feared terrorist groups active anywhere in Sol.
So, terrorist organization, revolutionary government that was overthrown? Sounds familiar. Think this theory has any credibility? Edit: Here's the quote:
Zavala — A waste of time, as always. I won't confiscate the Red Death engrams, I won't roll back the SUROS Crucible firmware to its “original” (preposterously inflated) state. And I won't conduct any more “forensic inquiries” like this! My Redjacks unlocked your MIDA weapon's logs; simple enough once we used the rifle's own electronic warfare tools. The rifle was designed by primitive AI and manufactured for use by a “revolutionary government” named MIDA. Mars Is Damnably Arid, perhaps. Guerilla war suits these versatile weapons. But Rahool insists his records never hinted at a rebel group named MIDA. According to the rifle's cached messages, MIDA's brief reign killed a full ten percent of the Martian people. I gave Lakshmi the weapon for her take. She insinuates that it came from another timeline, perhaps through Golden Age experiments. That means it's outside your jurisdiction to ban. —Shaxx
Note the "very short lived" and the "brief reign" similarities from the two quotes, as well as the AI reference in the MIDA grimoire. Marathon quite heavily featured AI, so perhaps this is only further proof? TLDR; MIDA's lore is a reference to Marathon.

  • it's been years since this post was made so sorry if someone has already said this, but it is a Marathon reference. the MIDA revolutionary government is a group that occupied mars for a short time in Marathon. the MIDA mini-tool is a first person narration of someone in the anthem universe. he even talks about Battleroids and Bernard Strauss. also something neat I just realized, the Mjolnir Mark IV armor from halo is named after the Mjolnir Mark IV Battleroids from Marathon.

  • Wasn't the Master Chief thought to be in one of the pods in the colony ship on the Cayde's Stash mission in TTK? You could scan the pod with your ghost and it talked about a powerful guardian who fought in the last Great War and decided to sit this one out.

MIDA Mini-Tool has some neat stuff.
2472/11/17 -- 4.9°S 0°E AUDIO ONLY Strauss is gone. Whole sky alight as his ship set off. I might be the last MIDA survivor on Mars. The gun detected teleports yesterday and I had to move camp. Cannot shake the fear that they will send battleroids; even this AI marvel couldn't save me. Shot the ice this morning. The gun fired a thermal round and then a pellet of water purifier. Came out pure and sweet. Marvelous. I've been reading the gun's Encyclopedia Arcana. All about the crash that became Strauss's obsession and hope. "Metastability in the salvaged construct!" Ha ha! Let's hope our ideals too can pass through grief, fury and envy into a new freedom elsewhere. Wonder if the gun hear me when I asked to go somewhere better. Wonder why it led me here. Going to follow it's compass tonight. Down Below
The ship is UESC Marathon, carved from the moon of Deimos. 2472 is the date it launched. Battleroids are what the player was. "Dead soldiers were recycled in makeshift battleroid factories. Easy to manufacture chips enhanced the fragile human brain, and genetically enhanced muscles and titanium bones replaced the fragile human form. The modern battleroid was born." Strauss would be Bernard Strauss, member of MIDA who organised the player and the other 9 Battleroids to be placed on Marathon (the ship). Bernard is also responsible for Durandal's rampancy. ~TGW

      • The reference to marathon was already well understood in the first destiny. Still, nice to see them expanding on it. I've also appreciated a few references to rebalancing and a few weapons from the first game.

              • Didn't read it all as short on time. There was a similar theory early on in d1 about mida referencing Marathon. No idea re source, when I have time I'll look into it
I don't think that Bungie would wittingly connect Destiny and Marathon's universes together, so take this theory as an obscure reference rather than a conspiracy theory.
I think you're wrong. I thought that point of view was wrong three years ago, and I thought that point of view was wrong ten years ago. : )
Too tenuous and too much of a reach. Plus, the only governments we know of in marathon lasted a loooooong time. Without a direct reference or mention of one of the three human AIs from marathon, this really isn't indicative of anything.
Not really, its entirely possible that the Mida organization was able to function as a government for a short time on Mars after the coup. There is nothing that really rules that possibility out. Clearly its a reference to Marathon, I and many others thought it was before, but this additional information lines right up with being a reference. Also Rasputin more or less directly refers to Durandal as his cousin is Rasputin 4, just saying. And there weren't just three human AIs in Marathons story. Of course there are the three main AIs. But Roland, Charlemagne and Cortana/ Nyx all play a role in Marathons backstory. Although the last one has to be inferred by carefully paying attention. She is here too.

              • This is pretty interesting. Makes me wonder, are there any other references to marathon in D1/2 that we missed? I remember someone said that a legendary flavor text referenced the dreaded Hangar 96 but I don't remember details

Nice find. Never made the connection myself until you pointed it out. I'm surprised to see that Bungie still references their old franchises.
