Sometimes, it takes a bit longer to get a code than other times. It's all based on the distribution service used by your retailer.
As for the code, you redeem one nine digit Beta key for one Beta code when the Beta comes. You need an Xbox or PSN account to register a Beta key, but you'll choose your platform at a later date for PC.

I pre-ordered on Xbox one and the beta still hasn't started yet

If you preordered digitally, you don't need a code. You have automatic access. Check your My Games and Apps or the Xbox Store.

I just read on another forum that u have to dl the beta from the store. Didn't know that, thought that it would automatically show up in my games. Thanks for the reply!
