As Alexander Payne once said, "You just never know when you're living in a golden age."
I know now that if Destiny ever had a golden age, it is long gone, but can it ever come back? It depends on if we speak up.
The implementation of Skill-Based Matchmaking has destroyed this game. Match times take twice as long as before, and the matches that we do get thrown into are either in progress or are complete sweat fests. It doesn't help that our once-favorite Exotic guns now feel like severely mediocre pea shooters that are mere shells of their former selves. Still, for the purposes of this post, I would like to focus on SBMM.
A little about myself. Last summer, I pulled consistent 2.5 to 3 k/ds and found that I was at the top of the scoreboard almost every match. On an average game, I would pull about a 2 to a 2.3 k/d. On an above-average game, I would pull as high as a 5 k/d. Now, I am lucky to even go neutral, and that's putting it lightly.
My overall kill/death ratio is somewhere around 2.1 (give or take). The k/ds of the players who I am matched against are 1.5, 2, and 3, whereas the k/ds of the players on my team are .9 to 1.2 (at the highest). Can someone please explain to me how this is fair? Way back, the k/ds of my opponents and teammates alike typically ranged from .8 to 1.3, but as of June 2016 they are more than double these values.
Some of you will argue that I was never good at the game to begin with if I cannot compete against players who share my skill set. You may be right, but why should that matter? At the end of the day, Destiny is supposed to be a casual shooter, and as such I should not be forced to play my heart out every single match against players who are just as good if not better than me.
Another argument some of you will make is that the only way to truly improve at a game is to play against difficult opponents. What backwards logic. How am I supposed to improve as a player when the anger and frustration brought upon by difficult opponents negatively affect my performance in game? The truth is that you can only improve against weak opponents, not strong ones. It is the same principle in MMOs: you start off fighting lower tier enemies until you are strong enough to fight the higher tier ones. In Destiny's multiplayer, if you possess an overall 1.5 k/d or higher, there is simply NO room for improvement because you are only as strong as Bungie thinks you should be. Essentially, the only way up is down.
"But Marc, SBMM finally gives below-average players the chance to compete. You shouldn't be allowed to pull 2 and 3 k/ds every match--that's just unfair to everyone else!"
While that may be true for below-average players (the minority), you are literally alienating the rest of everyone else by forcing them to regress to the mean and re-normalize their k/ds against their will.
If Bungie is so avid about keeping SBMM in the game despite 90% of the player base blatantly objecting to it on the forums and otherwise, then they need to RESTRICT it to SPECIFIC playlists (i.e.: Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris) that are skill-based by nature. We, the Destiny community, should be given the option to play hyper-competitive matches at our leisure, not all the time. In addition, the only surefire way to resolve the connectivity crisis that is plaguing matchmaking right now is to 100% prioritize the best possible connections over skill. Doing so will make Destiny fun again, but most importantly, doing so will MAKE DESTINY GREAT AGAIN!
TL;DR -- Skill-Based Matchmaking has destroyed this game because it favors the minority of players yet excludes the majority, forcing them into ultra-competitive matches without taking into consideration casual play styles and optimum connections. In that regard, Bungie needs to either abolish or restrict SBMM to playlists such as Iron Banner and Trials so that the Crucible can be the light-hearted experience that it once was.
EDIT 6/29: So many "you shouldn't be pulling 2 and 3 k/ds every match because that's unfair for us casual players!!" comments. I guess I should have known what to expect.
Clearly some of you have short attention spans and did not actually read my post. By catering to the noobs, you alienate the people who actually perform consistently well. Why should players whose k/ds exceed 1.5 need to suffer at the expense of everyone else? That is an emulation of socialism, and it hasn't worked in a single country.
One other thing I would like to clear up is that I don't want Bungie to get rid of SBMM across the board so that I can pub stomp everyone again. I want them to RESTRICT SBMM to specific playlists so that the Crucible is not ultra-competitive everywhere we go.
Lastly, even if I did go back to getting 25, 30, or 40 kills a match, I'd probably lose anyway. Any time I did exceptionally well in Year 1 was most likely when the rest of my team did exceptionally poor. It's just the way the universe works.

2 RepliesI hate Crucible as competitive modes are not my first choice. However I don't really see an issue with SBMM other than the matches are more competitive... It is a competitive game mode. Seems to me that most complaining always starts with a statement on some bodies KD ratio. When ever I see that I automatically think.. "Ah found the real problem" Ppl hate losing.. so excuses start flowing. If you want to chill out with friends then I would suggest raids, patrol, PoE maybe even a strike or two. Keeping in mind Crucible is a competitive mode. Hence it should be a real challenge. If your main worry about SBMM is KD ratio then you probably shouldn't play a competitive game mode.

4 RepliesExcept for the part where Destiny has ALWAYS had some level of SBMM.. always..

5 RepliesI dont mind playing in sweaty matches. I like the competition. You don't learn anything shooting someone in the back of the head. If you can't handle that, go play PvE. I am blamin tired of LAG SWITCHERS and being matched up with scrubs (w\ less then 1.0 k\d), that dont know how to A.D.S. or revive a teammates. I lose over 75% of my matches due to lag switchers and scrubs. Just fix these 2 issues. Please and thank you.

Soooo you are upset because you can't do well in crucible anymore? (I don't like sbmm either)

5 RepliesNOBODY GETS THE POINT EVERYONE ON HERE IS A ARROGANT PIECE OF SHIT

Yup. Kind of like saying, "Hey, I just built a spice rack. I think I should build a barn next. Hi I'm Bungie" "Hey Bungie, we're the Local Authority. Why are you trying to build a barn in the bird sanctuary?" SBMM without any dedicated servers was a stoopid move. Lag and crap host networking is more frustrating than anything else.

9 RepliesThis is my favorite part:
Another argument some of you will make is that the only way to truly improve at a game is to play against difficult opponents. What backwards logic. How am I supposed to improve as a player when the anger and frustration brought upon by difficult opponents negatively affect my performance in game?
I have never seen the "this game makes me so mad I suck at it" excuse. Hint: This is a game. If it makes you so angry that it impacts your life you probably need to take a break from it. It's like dude that kept hitting himself in the head with a hammer and blamed his headache on the hammer only to figure out how good he felt when he stopped.

1 ReplySo what your saying is that the game is trash more or less because in the PVP section of the game ,not the pve that's not relevant for some reason, you have to actually try in crucible and that makes the game horrible . I do not understand me personally I know I love SBMM along with lots of other players who aren't that good at crucible it actually gives us a chance to fight instead of being constantly killed

4 RepliesNo it's not you just need to git gud skrub

As someone who vehemently has opposed this view in the past and still don't entirely agree with I will say the sbmm is absolutely wearing on me. "Jumping on for a few quick matches" turns into putting in overwatch to have more fun in pvp more often these days for me. The minute to minute gameplay of destiny is too fun for me to stay away too long but it has definitely been better

Edited by Haunter: 6/28/2016 6:17:19 PM
Here's just 3 reasons SBMM is bad: 1. Below average never improve, they keep playing the same players, some of them are obviously better then others, they get used to using angel of light let's say, it works against other bad players but when they start getting better and move up into the positive kds they get destroyed as decent players know how to look up in the air, however at this point angel of light is so ingrained it's much harder to change playstlyes, thus causing mire frustration even amongst lower tier players. 2. SBMM causes horrible lag, red bars teleporting or just taking no damage, search times taking forever, etc 3. Every single game is a sweatfest besides those rare games where you match a bunch of .001 and pubstomp (something SBMM was supposed to completly "fix") you can't play with lower tier friends unless you don't mind losing, you have to use the best weapons regardless of fun, you need to try every game, it ruins all fun and relaxation of destiny pvp.
9 RepliesEdited by Sernik: 6/28/2016 2:07:34 PMI said the same thing and got dismissed by the community. SBMM just takes out the fun factor out of crucible.

FYI, SBMM has been in Destiny the whole time. Fix your phrasing or you have no credibility with those that realize this.
-
Im 100% with you. But. My time has come. I am done with pvp. I cannot tell my opinion on the forums because i will just get attacked saying im a crybaby scrub
-
DUDE; man I feel your pain. Your KD this month is .6... that would piss me off too. yeah, sweaty matches suck. If I bring one casual player into my team of 6 we can barely carry him. If we bring to casuals they get .15 kd and it SUCKS... I think anyone left playing the game is just all that much better AND the SBMM amplifies all of this. It's supremely annoying but I really don't know what the hell to do to improve it. you do have some good ideas, but i doubt they will do anything about it. SAD.

USE SBMM IN PvE!!! Thanks!

The objective of a competitive game mode which is really what PVP is all about is to provide a competitive experience.

Edited by ScottEggert: 6/28/2016 5:37:14 PMOKAY. One question just how do you improve your skills by playing against inferior opponents? In my experience both in RL and PvP, I improved by being placed against better skilled opponents not less skilled opponents.

If there ever was a golden age it was probably around the beginning of HoW
-
Correction. Skill based matchmaking destroyed PVP. Unless it somehow destroyed PVE too, but it's unlikely with the way things go for me at least.
-
Wouldn't worry about it I got teamed up today with 3 level 20s there new to the game and also next game there was 3 against 6 how is that fair?
-
I know the immediate argument is always 'Of course you enjoyed playing only when you got to win more'.. Let me add some different context. In year 1 I hovered around 1-1.5 K/D... I had games with a 3, and had games with a .65.. In the past, if I queued alone, I had more of a chance of compensating for a bad team with excellent individual play... Now, if I have a bad team.. We're completely f@#$@d. Being the only guy on the team with a positive K/D is like being lord of the flies, and I have no chance to pull us through because the other team was already stacked. Our only chance is that WHEN people start leaving (and they will.. they always do...) Johnny no-thumbs and Brian the brainless (totally stole those names) get replaced with decent people. What is more likely is, they never get replaced at all. PS: Don't reply with 'find friends to play with' because THEY ALL STOPPED.

I agree to a small extent: give us a ranked playlist!

All I read was a bunch of sweat.
