As Alexander Payne once said, "You just never know when you're living in a golden age."
I know now that if Destiny ever had a golden age, it is long gone, but can it ever come back? It depends on if we speak up.
The implementation of Skill-Based Matchmaking has destroyed this game. Match times take twice as long as before, and the matches that we do get thrown into are either in progress or are complete sweat fests. It doesn't help that our once-favorite Exotic guns now feel like severely mediocre pea shooters that are mere shells of their former selves. Still, for the purposes of this post, I would like to focus on SBMM.
A little about myself. Last summer, I pulled consistent 2.5 to 3 k/ds and found that I was at the top of the scoreboard almost every match. On an average game, I would pull about a 2 to a 2.3 k/d. On an above-average game, I would pull as high as a 5 k/d. Now, I am lucky to even go neutral, and that's putting it lightly.
My overall kill/death ratio is somewhere around 2.1 (give or take). The k/ds of the players who I am matched against are 1.5, 2, and 3, whereas the k/ds of the players on my team are .9 to 1.2 (at the highest). Can someone please explain to me how this is fair? Way back, the k/ds of my opponents and teammates alike typically ranged from .8 to 1.3, but as of June 2016 they are more than double these values.
Some of you will argue that I was never good at the game to begin with if I cannot compete against players who share my skill set. You may be right, but why should that matter? At the end of the day, Destiny is supposed to be a casual shooter, and as such I should not be forced to play my heart out every single match against players who are just as good if not better than me.
Another argument some of you will make is that the only way to truly improve at a game is to play against difficult opponents. What backwards logic. How am I supposed to improve as a player when the anger and frustration brought upon by difficult opponents negatively affect my performance in game? The truth is that you can only improve against weak opponents, not strong ones. It is the same principle in MMOs: you start off fighting lower tier enemies until you are strong enough to fight the higher tier ones. In Destiny's multiplayer, if you possess an overall 1.5 k/d or higher, there is simply NO room for improvement because you are only as strong as Bungie thinks you should be. Essentially, the only way up is down.
"But Marc, SBMM finally gives below-average players the chance to compete. You shouldn't be allowed to pull 2 and 3 k/ds every match--that's just unfair to everyone else!"
While that may be true for below-average players (the minority), you are literally alienating the rest of everyone else by forcing them to regress to the mean and re-normalize their k/ds against their will.
If Bungie is so avid about keeping SBMM in the game despite 90% of the player base blatantly objecting to it on the forums and otherwise, then they need to RESTRICT it to SPECIFIC playlists (i.e.: Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris) that are skill-based by nature. We, the Destiny community, should be given the option to play hyper-competitive matches at our leisure, not all the time. In addition, the only surefire way to resolve the connectivity crisis that is plaguing matchmaking right now is to 100% prioritize the best possible connections over skill. Doing so will make Destiny fun again, but most importantly, doing so will MAKE DESTINY GREAT AGAIN!
TL;DR -- Skill-Based Matchmaking has destroyed this game because it favors the minority of players yet excludes the majority, forcing them into ultra-competitive matches without taking into consideration casual play styles and optimum connections. In that regard, Bungie needs to either abolish or restrict SBMM to playlists such as Iron Banner and Trials so that the Crucible can be the light-hearted experience that it once was.
EDIT 6/29: So many "you shouldn't be pulling 2 and 3 k/ds every match because that's unfair for us casual players!!" comments. I guess I should have known what to expect.
Clearly some of you have short attention spans and did not actually read my post. By catering to the noobs, you alienate the people who actually perform consistently well. Why should players whose k/ds exceed 1.5 need to suffer at the expense of everyone else? That is an emulation of socialism, and it hasn't worked in a single country.
One other thing I would like to clear up is that I don't want Bungie to get rid of SBMM across the board so that I can pub stomp everyone again. I want them to RESTRICT SBMM to specific playlists so that the Crucible is not ultra-competitive everywhere we go.
Lastly, even if I did go back to getting 25, 30, or 40 kills a match, I'd probably lose anyway. Any time I did exceptionally well in Year 1 was most likely when the rest of my team did exceptionally poor. It's just the way the universe works.

2 RepliesThere should be a system in place that protects people with a .5 k.d and under, because honestly, those players shouldn't be in wild..
-
2 RepliesServers are just shit! SBMM is a great thing! K/D around 1 is perfect matching opponents System. I am a quite lousy PVP Player in Destiny and I hate it when there is someone in the other Team who smashes all of my Team, without SBMM it would be much worse. So go and play with People on your Level

trials and sbmm??? played against a team where the players from the other team had a kd 2 + mine is u 0.9... sbmm? no

The game outcomes are predetermined anyway from the get-go. You cannot, as a solo player, put together a winning game streak. Match-making doesn't allow it. Whatever the actual parameters are, there is always a pattern of losses either side of a win to normalise the stats. I've posted on this before and no I'm not paranoid. In the past I actually did think it was because of a lack of skill or that I didn't have the best weapons or armour or even a levelled subclass that was the preferred meta choice: it's all shite. The game plays you as much, if not more, than you it. Consecutive games in the same lobby, same subclass, same weapons, back to the same map (twice in three games), KD first one 0.3 next 4.0. What's changed? The other players haven't changed (guy that won with 25 plus kills is now languishing on the bottom of the leader board!) Have I suddenly gained a level of 'skill' I didn't have the previous game. No of course not. A degree of variance might be expected but that's a massive degree compared to the balancing graph of subclasses for Bungies recent 'adjustments,' their justification amounted to 0.3 of a variance not 3.7! Play the next few games same outcome, quit and go and do something else for half an hour, return; same pattern. Iron Banner is a great example of this. After every rare win, teams are broken up: expect to lose, often heavily, for the next few until the next rare win. No matter what you do. I swear half the time I think my guns are broken and my character is made out of tissue paper. Land half a clip into someone's head from a 335 Mida and they one-shot you with some blue Suros from across the map. The match-making and lag are ruinous for a consistent experience at the moment. Same thing happens in PvE as well. Go into a match-made PoE activity and the first one is easy, the next you get matched with players who don't have a clue what they're doing. Sure they're level 40, maybe even high LL, but they play like they have no idea what they're supposed to do. Shooting at mines that they are supposed to dismantle, rushing headlong into a dense mob of ads to die over and over again etc. The reset after a team wipe makes the activity you failed at much easier than the initial attempt and yet the same thing happens over again because the match-making wants to share out success equally. CoE is actually easier to solo than PoE in a second match-made team. That's all ok if you understand what's actually happening and don't take it seriously but if you are constantly either carrying or being carried and battling against the red-bar indestructibles, it gets very wearing. Skill, my -blam!-ing arse!

SBMM needs to die. -blam!- that laggy shit

Now lets make this post more interesting and relevent. Who likes Mashed Potatoe?

1 ReplyHow are below average players the minority? That alone makes you sound like a fool.
-
1 ReplyThing is i dont think the lower skilled players are the minority. Quite the opposite actually.

1 ReplyIn a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine thesugar and water over medium-low heat until the sugar dissolves. Increase the heat and bring to a boil, without stirring. If necessary, use a wetpastry brush to wash down any crystals on the side of the pan. Boil until the syrup is a deep amber color, about 5 to 6 minutes. Remove the sugar from the heat and carefullywhisk in the heavy cream. The mixture will bubble. Stir in the unsalted butter, and salt. 3 RepliesEdited by SergioVengeance: 6/29/2016 3:38:44 AMThis is why I only play BF4 as my competitive shooter. The only matchmaking I have to do is get into a server on my side of the world. Not wait to find matches. Oh, and DEDICATED SERVERS as well. Also no Meta where all 64 players are using the same 2-3 weapons only. Balance. Things Destiny lack. Seeing BF4 requires a larger skill gap to get into as well then Destiny is, it is quite sad.

Crucible is a joyless experience now. Every single time.

Bump Because SBMM must be cast to the shadows

Edited by Notorious GIB: 6/29/2016 2:15:00 AMSBMM is straight ass. It takes me so long to even try to find a game anymore. But one thing that I don't agree with you is saying that you can't improve against better players. If you keep getting stomped that's one thing. But to truly improve you have got to play better players and analyze what you did wrong and what you could have done better. There's a reason why other top tier players play against other top tier players when they want to match each other. It's to get better. Matching a player worse than them won't make them a better player. The best way to improve is to just grind crucible to improve your overall gun skill and watch videos from good players. See what they do and try to incorporate that into your play style to the best of your ability. There are many streamers and youtubers that have series to help improve your skill. Back in the Halo days, that is how I got better and also had one of my friends kick my ass every once in a while. Even though I was a hard head back in the day, I sucked it up and listened to what he had to say about my gameplay and improved. That and watching old fileshare games of pro players to see what they did. Ironically I did the same thing to one of my friends that needed help in Halo and got him up to the skill that I was at. Watching videos on how to get better is one of the most underrated ways to improve yourself. Gun skill only goes so far. But a smart player with gun skill is deadly.

4 RepliesJust remove SBMM entirely and make 100% CBMM and let the pieces fall where they may. You win some you lose some but at least there will be no unkillable red bar gods. Fix your game bungie.
-
I don't understand why Bungie would implement SBMM and then still keep it after all the issues. I've never really had any issues in pvp till TTK dropped. Seems they enjoy sabotaging quite a bit, bass ackwards if you ask me
-
1 ReplySeeing as this game is dying.. SBMM is kind of a joke.
-
Golden Age was 2014 to TTK
-
SBMM is great for fair game. I love playing against players of my skill and caliber, but I don't want to trade a reliable connection and quick wait times for SBMM. Bungie either has to fix the lag and wait times in SBMM or remove SBMM entirely.
-
People like you have ruined destiny

7 Repliesseems like half that wall is just you complaining about not being able to beat up weaker people than you anymore on that i say sucks to be you as for this part
How am I supposed to improve as a player when the anger and frustration brought upon by difficult opponents negatively affect my performance in game?
well now you know how casuals feel being connection based to a party of 6 tryhards non stop
The truth is that you can only improve against weak opponents, not strong ones
this seems so idiotic i wont even comment on it. the simple fact is this game should have a balance between skill and connection based. but that will never happen as some lack the internet speed, seem to be streaming off multiple devices at the same time, or using their phone to play
-
2 RepliesSBMM is great. Some games are tough, but all are rewarding. I play more crucible now than I used to. All due to SBMM. I will not play a game where I am getting curb stopped so you can enjoy a chill fun game. Get good or don't complain. You are being pitted against players of your caliber. Sorry

If it wasn't for my bullets not registering, I wouldn't mind it.

1 ReplyMatches take longer cause of all the nerfs... primary weapons are so much weaker and there are no thorn, last word, or hawkmoon weapons that would 1 or 2 shot...damage, range(damage fall off), accuracy, ammo, perks) all nerfed... special weapons too... heavy ammo only drops once and u don't get other players heavy when u kill them...and ammo was reduced big time on heavy... abilities and supers also got nerfed... movements nerfed... We are so much weaker and it takes so much more time to kill... If u were good at 2 piecing enemy n avoiding damage u could run around n be agressive by urself... U would get crazy kill sprees w primary weapons... U would get crazy kill sprees w heavy... U would get so many more supers... Now u can't be agressive by urself cause if u kill someone u pretty much have to reload n take cover...u use to be able to get 2 sometimes 3 kills in one clip... Shotguns and fusions were King and no one camped and sniped...they would get 2 pieced for hardscoping...now snipers got it made cause no primary weapon can kill a sniper now...they have so much more time to line up headshot, double body shot, or body shot n switching to primary...which is the weakest shit ever... So yea sbmm has not done much but add lag...n lag is horrendous... Sbmm has done very little...
-
My major issue is that it doesnt work! It doesnt prioritize full fireteams vs full teams of randoms. That should be a priority!!! If its really "skill" based its crystal fückin clear that a full fireteam of players that have pubstomped the same group of randoms for the 3rd game in a row are higher skilled than that group of randoms. But noooooooo, it throws you into games against the SAME fireteam 3,4, 5 times in a row even if your team LOST EVERY OTHER GAME!! How is that skill based? How come i have to quit out of games and log out of a character just to stop sbmm from putting me in the same game against the same sweaty fireteam even after i leave the lobby several times? I shouldnt have to do that if the matchmaking is actually skill based.
-
In my humble opinion connection should always be the priority. I personally do not care or mind if every match I get put into are sweaty so long as I can damage my opponent as I should be able to. Right after two patches ago (2.3.0?) the lag and hit detection have been atrocious. This makes playing PvP irritating and feels like a waste of time.
