I SUCK in Crucible

So. Crucible. My kd is a 0.8 and 0.7 overall. I do fairly well in control, about 15 to 20 kills. I also do fairly well in skirmish when not playing with my team, about 15 kills. But when I am with my ToO team I get like 4 maybe 6 kills per game. Why is that? Also in any mode other than control and 3 v 3 I just get rekt. Especially Clash and IB. I cannot figure out why. Also for my loadout I use Striker with MIDA/Last Word and 1000-yard/Anitomy XVI. It just doesn't seem to work for me and I can't find something comfortable, please put suggestions below. I used to main as a hunter and do the same, so if your suggestion is to switch to hunter, please give a valid reason. Thanks for all feedback.

Much more important than the specific loadout you use is how you think about crucible engagements. Here are a few tips I try to live by: -- Learn when to break engagements. Knowing when to keep fighting when you're hurt is a surprisingly difficult thing to get the hang of. This is because there isn't just one threshold that's always true. Many factors must be considered, such as your gun skill, opponent gun skill, positional inequalities, grenade/melee/super charges on both sides of the fight, team positioning, enemy team postioning, and a host of other stuff. For players who aren't confident that they can consistently win 1-on-1 battles, it's best to always break the engagement when you're hurt. As you get better, you'll learn when you can and should break that rule. -- Always shoot from an advantageous position. This ties in with the previous point. If you're shooting from around a corner, you will not only be partially in cover, but you'll also be able to easily sidestep danger when you're hurt (watch out for grenades aimed at finishing you off in your safe space). Whenever you initiate a gunfight and end up dead, ask yourself if you had the advantageous position. Sometimes you're just going to get killed. That's normal. Tip your hat. But be honest with yourself about the times when you start a fight with bad odds of a good outcome, and learn from your mistakes. -- Limit your engagements. Another good thing about corners and doorways is that they can be used to block part of your screen, thereby allowing you to focus on just one player and make the space you have to think about much smaller. This makes aiming easier and, as mentioned above, keeps you safe. -- Your radar is your friend! Understanding how enemies tend to move through levels is incredibly valuable. Your radar will help you know which lanes your foes are attacking. Use that information to try to imagine what they're doing. If there's a pulsing red spot around a corner, you probably have someone camping with a shotgun, just waiting to pounce on the first set of guardian-shaped pixels to enter her or his field of view. That brings me to my next point... -- DON'T DO IT! Now that you know there's a villain waiting around the corner with Invective, you may be tempted to slide in there and show them who's boss. Don't do that. For the love of Crota, just don't do it. Learn to resist the temptation of low percentage moves. You're smarter than that. -- Lead with grenades. You can still show that shotgun-wielding knave what's what by tossing a grenade in there. It may get them to retreat. If so, aim through the doorway and get the kill. Easy peasy. If they don't budge, just keep in mind that they're there while you continue with normal gameplay. You only have to deal with threats. Right now, they're only a threat of being a threat. Keep it in mind, and go about your business of killing the rest of their team. Watch that radar though. They may get antsy and rush you. Now that they're a real threat, calmly end their assault with your positional advantage, or run away if they get the drop on you. -- Change verticality. On the subject of rushing through doorways and around corners, try not to go through at the normal head level. There are lots of people hard-scoping the sniping lines in this game. Jumping and sliding through choke points can turn their headshot into a miss or a body shot, possibly saving your life. There are just a few basic pointers that I use. I'm not the best, but I'm getting a lot better. Hope it helps!

    • I suck at 3 vs 3 too. It rewards patience and good decision making and im more of a frenetic run and gun player. I don't play with snipers because I'm not a beta that plays hide and seek online and I'm not about to look up any tips or change my play style in the least If and whenever I do make it to the lighthouse, I'll do it my way. If I don't ever make it, so what. Ima go out like frank Sinatra

Use a gnasher. Try not to look at the reload meter to let your reactions get used to timing the active reload, this will let you focus on maneuvering. All characters are right handed, so you try to always attack from that side. If you're to your target's left, that's even better. You don't have to stick to cover when firing. It's safer to stand slightly behind large cover to inch your sights out to engage rather than putting your back to the wall and exposing yourself to shoot around a corner. Once you get the active down, practice aiming with your elbow. Aiming in has its time and place, but it will limit your movements. Don't stare at the elbow, look above it and make imaginary crosshairs with a another line just below the shoulder. You don't have to get get close immediately. Work your target down. If they try to run, pull out your lancer, they won't heal fast enough to get far. You'll notice the shots are a little down and to the left from the center of your screen, that's why those imaginary crosshairs are a good thing to think of. When you get a little more confident, try aiming in as an adjustment tool. This sounds odd, but you'll notice that you shoot a little higher and closer to the center of your screen. With practice, you'll see that aiming in is a good defensive move to hit a target that's rushing you from around a corner, especially from the right. Though this probably won't down the enemy outright, it'll put enough hurt on them for you to reposition and land a killing blow. With the right timing and knowledge of how high to raise the aim, this tactic can actually lead to quick headshots, but it is first and foremost a defensive move. You can probably guess that movement is key. Hiding in one spot is a good way to trap yourself, and if you're losing a fight, get out of it, ready up while they give chase, and attack only when you know you hold the advantage. Put them on the defensive. You'll see people moving in ways that appear to be lagging or broken, they are most likely wall bouncing. This is a movement that's not hard to pick up, but difficult to master and use effectively. Work on reloads first, and feel free to join up with me when you want to work on movement. I'm not what I used to be, but I'm still happy to teach what I know.

    • I suck as well but watching some true vanguard tip videos on YouTube helped me bring mine from .7 to almost 1.0 skill doesn't play as much of a roll as does teamwork, paying attention to the environment, and the connection strength

      • I don't play rumble all that much, but it's a good training ground to improve your skills. Helps not to rely on teammates and get better at scrambling out of bad situations. If you can start doing well in the rumble playlist, then it'll translate far better team PvP. Give it a try, it'll suck a lot at first. But you'll improve far faster.

      • Hello. I too suck at crucible, and encountered the same issues. I suggest looking up true vanguard and Sliq111 on YouTube. They have nice strategy guides/how to tip vids, including titan skating. Also check out the link, these guys do all the maths on time to kill, advanced crucible strats, etc. Good luck.

        • Don't sweat it, OP. According to the dweebs on this forum who take the game far too seriously, anything under 2.0 means you suck. I've been told that I'm bad, with a (seemingly respectable) 1.3 k.d. F#ck 'em.

          • I don't have any tips, just wanted to give props to the OP and all the people in the thread. I don't see many of these, helpful, positive vibe type threads around here, anymore. Real quick, though...I noticed some folks suggesting using the Titan skating to close distances. Can someone explain to me what titan skating is?

            • Kudos to the positive comments trying to help fellow guardians out. It's good to see for a change. Some great feedback on how to get better. All I can add is to practice and slow down if you are aggressive. Think about strategy and tactics to stay alive and use the environment to line up shots. For me, things started to click a bit more when I started playing 3 v 3. I was reluctant to do so at first as I didn't want to be the guy dragging down the team, but it really did help once I got into it. Less chaos led to starting to really think more about how to get the kill as opposed to just trying to stay alive. Use weapons you feel comfy with to start then branch out on weapon selection as you get more comfortable. And learn the maps. I by no means consider myself good. Hovering around a 1 k/d. But I can say I am having more fun than not and that's what it's about...

            • Lol, I suck worse than you promise. I'm so bad. I keep thinking one day Bungie will send me a letter asking me to just stay away from all PVP related activities. They haven't but they should. I don't have any tips obviously, just wanted you to know that I feel your pain :)

                • The reason is that trials is more controlled, more 1v1. There is less chance your opponent is running about getting caught off guard or distracted with another enemy. Just keep practicing and you'll get better.

                • 4-6 kills is not bad in trials, unless you're trading rounds every match then it would be considered low.

PVP is also a mental game..You got to believe that you can and will kill the opponent in front of you..Skills matters , make no mistake but you got to be mentally ready for it too. Cheers :-)

                • I suck at pvp. I play solo because most of my friends are better players so I would get matched with people better than me if I was teamed Lower skill levels are less likely to have fireteams against you and are less likely to have people running the latest meta and camper / snipers. Overall, it's a lot more relaxing being a scrub
