Just to clarify, I'm a guy.
My little sister plays online with my brother and I all the time, she's 15. On a regular basis she has to hear obscene comments and inappropriate jokes made at her expense because of all the immature little shitheads who think they should say whatever they want.
Girls are treated like they are worthless when they get online, like the butt of a joke. Obviously, there are good guys who would never be so inconsiderate, probably most guys are cool, but there are still too many that actively ruin the experience for girl gamers. They shame them for being girls and objectify them. That's why so many girls avoid joining parties or using lfg forums.
(Edit 5: apparently I need to make something clear. I'm not talking about joking around or even making some friendly jabs. I'm not talking about trash talk. I'm talking about genuine HARASSMENT. There is nothing, NOTHING, okay about some adult guy telling my 15 year old sister she makes him want to masturbate. There is nothing okay with telling her that she is giving him a hard on. These are genuine experiences that she has encountered that I happened to be in the party for. I'm not saying it happens everyday, not even every week, but still way more often than it should.)
So when I apologize on behalf of men, feel free to treat me like I'm being a white knight, trying to get attention for myself. Just be aware that it makes you a part of the problem because you trivialize the terrible treatment that the female part of our community has to endure just to take part.
Sorry ladies.
Edit: I've always been a believer that we've approached bullying in our society from the wrong direction. I believe that instead of punishing bullies we should focus on raising the self worth and esteem of our youth and the problem will take care of itself.
But that doesn't alter the fact that as a community, as gamers, we have a very large sexism problem that a lot of people continue to deny exists. Should girls be able to handle it better, probably... But we can't expect the victims to do all the changing. If we want the gaming community to improve, we have to be willing to accept that as guys we need to make a change and influence each other to treat the ladies, our fellow gamers, better.
Just like we cant deny racism exists, guys... We can't deny this is a problem.
It's not the only one, but the one I'm addressing here.
Edit 2:
Tl;dr- they're hiding because they are sick of being treated like crap by immature guys.
Edit 3:
I'm not trying to make a point about racism or singling out white people, I'm just using that example as a comparison. There are hundreds of others I could come up with.
Edit 4:
It's really simple, we should treat the girls with respect. I don't understand how there's any opposition to this. This thread started out pretty positive and now the crappy side of the community is showing its colors. It's ugly.
Edit 6: 2000 Replies wow. It's not all good but I've seen some awesome discussions taking place.

1 ReplyGamer gate proved that sexism in the gaming industry was a thing and was disgustingly widespread. Unfortunately the anonymity of the internet pushes people to say things and act in ways they wouldn't in a real life crowd situation. Your sister certainly does not deserve in any way that kind of interaction when doing something which most of us do to relax, have fun and disappear from the real world for a while. All I can say is that she really needs to game with friends, perhaps join a clan. The Dames of Destiny are always welcoming and you can find regional shoot offs of the clan. For Destiny there are also sites like https://www.the100.io/ which will have better selection of custom matchmaking than randoms you may meet on the lfg sites. I will say that I met both ladies in our clan through LFG and they neither had a bad time with the random group we met in, nor have I encountered since. Still they're our clan mates now and we'll have their back in any party, game whether we're in there or not. Better believe that anyone insulting any clan mates is going to get Destiny and PSN reports sent in. Hey it's the most you can do over the internet and aside from eradicating Hive, Fallen, Vex and Cabal from the known galaxy..... I'm actually a passive guy.

1 ReplyI'm a female gamer and I can honestly say I have met about 3-5 guys online who I enjoy playing with enough to use my mic with. For the other guys who don't know I'm female, they will look at my name and think I'm male. Mockery and bullying is real on both sides of the table, but whenever I get mocked for my gender, all I wanted to do was shut off my Xbox and cry. Sure they may think I'm an MLG player, but once they hear a female voice, that's when their true colors show. For this reason, I have joined Dames of Destiny, and they have accepted me with open arms. I have met so many awesome female gamers and even the occasional male who is a friend. I hope to join into kings fall raids and other activities with my clan.:)

19 RepliesGirls are treated just as poorly as guys online, I know you may not agree with this but you're just wrong. Everyone is subject to mockery and criticism on the Internet, that's how it works. The only reason you see more problems with sexism towards girl gamers is because people run to the defense of girls due to the embedded ideal of chivalry and the idea that woman need to be protected. I know you love your sister dearly and that's understandable but you need to understand that people are just mean, especially under the guise of anonymity. So I wouldn't say it's a sexist problem, I wouldn't even say it's a problem. It's just how the Internet works.

1 ReplyLet's get this over with. "IS HER NAME DESTINY????!?!"

3 RepliesAs To those that call you out as a white knight, I see nothing wrong with someone standing up for what is right. They use white knight as derision because you make them look bad. One can only revel in bad behaviour then there are no repercussions so awful people get more awful when they have been called out for being awful.

3 RepliesAlmost all of the friends I play with on the One who are females, don't really get any kind of flame/abuse. That being said, even male gamers are just as subject to harassment as females, it comes with gaming - it always will.

58 RepliesEdited by RadicalSpirit: 10/12/2015 5:16:57 PMI will take issue with a few of these comments, because not only are they mostly a load of old nonsense, but they serve to accentuate your naivety and neediness. Maybe 10 years ago in certain circles you might have had a point, but nowadays it's a LOT different, and to be honest I am becoming increasingly sick of it. Sure there are actual women, who are also gamers out there... but these days it seems by and large that most of them are on Twitch trying to make money by exploiting the nature of the gaming community. I have not seen a female get "bullied" once in at least 5 years... The only time I see a guy remotely insult a woman is in one of two scenarios: - The guy tries to flirt with her, gets rejected and immediately fires a shot to feel good about himself, Example? My friend (Black guy in new york) once said " Hey what it do Ma, you soundin sweet.." Her reply was "the f*ck? who the hell is you? get your dusty a$$ outta here" To which he said "F*ck you then bird a$$ b*tch, I didn't want you anyway" The other situation is when a guy is just purely ignorant to the world and believes that women or even certain races are somehow "inferior". From my experience these are usually white, uneducated trash from "Middle America" that don't know any better and to be honest need to be ignored. I rarely come across those types even though I play solely on US servers. Either way, both scenarios are rare and I commonly see female gamers being almost worshipped more than anything. A lot of it is because of Youtube and twitch, Disgraceful human beings like Sniperwolf and many others have shown more women that you can just take advantage of an entire community by showing off your body without having any skill at a game at all, or infact any knowledge about anything in the world. In the current gaming community meta, women have a big advantage over their male counter parts, they can literally be terrible at games, but still be able to build a big support network around them and turn that into revenue through social networks and streaming. Sure, they get some abuse, but so does everybody... and when you can make money from that attention, I'd rather be in that situation than getting abuse and no money. I hear a lot of women say "I get so many messages and friend requests everyday"... Well you know what? There are privacy settings for a reason. You get those messages and FRs because clearly you want them, and the attention because subconsciously it makes them feel better about their flaws. Let's face it... if a guy on PSN had 100 women messaging him everyday, I think he'd quickly forget his own flaws in life. If they don't want the attention they'd use the privacy settings given to them, which absolutely DOES work because I also use the same settings. I'm sick of seeing women on PSN with over 500 friends say "all these dudes are so thirsty, you wouldn't believe how many messages I get"... To me , they're just as bad... 500 friends?? Really? Who needs that many people on their list, seriously? Anyway, I've ranted long enough. Point is, don't sit here and try to defend women when you have no clue what the true meta in the gaming community is right now and just how ridiculous it has become. It only makes you look like a needy, clueless idiot. Please go tell me how people like SSSniperwolf, or other women like her deserve what they have right now... She came from showing nudes on MGO to making THOUSANDS from talking absolute garbage on youtube because of how she looks.

Thirsty gamers everywhere

Girl or guy I don't care I treat both with the respect they deserve

3 RepliesAm I the only one to stay quiet when playing with a Girl? I feel like I can't use my usual jokes because they are mainly dirty jokes.
-
1 ReplyYou have to admit though, its pretty funny trying to get a female titan to join her bubble bros for some quality time in a ward of dawn..

3 RepliesHere's a thought: Why don't we just take the sexists and push them somewhere else?
-
I have yet to experience any in game harassment. The most I have are people telling me that if there was in game trading they would give me everything I could ever want. The worst that's happened is that I lost a friend because he found out I had a boyfriend :/ though looking back on it now his jokes and his flirting was kinda unnervingly sexual. I'm sorry people have to be creepy and disgusting. Especially with her being young, that's pretty bad. Hopefully they got a ban of some sort.

I hate everyone equally

Chivalry is dead because women killed it. There are very few women left in western countries that deserve such treatment. If a woman wants respect from me she must earn it just like a man. #genderequality

They are very probably staying as far away from the sexist ravings on here as they possibly can.

Sadly that's how video game communities are.

15 RepliesEdited by Sneezes: 10/12/2015 2:21:42 AMI have to say I am a girl and I play with my friends. Whenever we need to lfg they do it willingly because they don't want to subject me to any more harassment or threats. I'm always weary of joining a random party invite who asks for help and rarely do I. I'm nervous when a new person joins a party I'm in when we have a slot to fill. Just the other day we had a random join a party he invited his friend the first guy was chill the second guy preceded to tell me how he would -blam!- me or shove his D in my mouth if I were his teacher. It is annoying. And after kicking him from the party he proceeded to send messages to me and my friends with more messages about what he would like to do to me. There are levels to it too from hey I've always wanted a girlfriend who games and flirtation following, to ridicule, to mild sexual harassment, to hardcore sexual harassment to even death threats. I would love to play with new people make more friends enjoy my time on a game openly but I'm happy to let people think I'm a 12 year old boy over being a girl. Edit: for the most part when it happens I block them report them and move on. And it's not that every encounter I have had is negative as most of the people I play with is have never met outside of xbox, but there are people I encounter on a regular basis who are. I don't let it deter me from meeting new people but in general I am apprehensive of meeting new people on a game. The people I play with are a great example of guys who accept and just treat me like anyone else when I mess up they make fun of me the same way we make fun of them. And we help each other all the time. It's a good environment even if we can be jerks to each other it's out of fun. And that's all I want when playing a game is a good time with good people and a good game- thankfully I have found that.

I don't approve of sexism.
Dear ladies, you are always welcome in my fireteam (not that it matters... unless you explicitly message me or stalk me on LFG, else we'd never be in contact. I usually have no need for a fireteam anyway.). I will respect you just like anyone else. You don't even need a mic! Just know how to shoot. If you don't know how to shoot... Well... We can still be non-raiding friends. Like my one friend that thinks I'm the greatest guardian who ever lived. I'm just gonna assume he's right. ... The gender ratio of my friends list is unbalanced like auto rifles. EVERYTHING MUST BE BALANCED.
3 RepliesWell I see the sjw scumbags have come out from under their rock to have a liberal circle jerk and infest this thread.

2 RepliesI think that you shouldn't just shelter your little sister from all evil, because hey, the world isn't perfect last I checked. Maybe she should just develop some thicker skin and give a comeback or two, and then people will see that she is cool and there is no need to disrepsect her. Me and my friendss always shit talk each other, and make fun of each other. But when it comes to girl gamers, people either ignore that they are a girl or they just act flat out stupid. Haven't you guys seen a female before? Chill out.

I agree with you and I liked the way you approached this. I completely agree. Bump

2 RepliesA guy has told me he masturbate to my voice

Good for you, standing up for girl gamers
-
I appreciate you OP. You have a point (maybe) I've never played with a girl gamer personally but I'd imagine it as, 'new' honestly. Don't want to be some desperate horny pedophile going on forums harassing girls. Nobody should be 'that guy'

I love all the people trying to justify this. Wtf lol
