I think it could be the Darkness' enemy: The Light. Or you know, something like that. The Darkness was attacking their home planet and were succeeding so this species, whatever it is called, developed a means to flee. This is how The Traveler was developed. Once they fled the Darkness managed to follow and kept attacking The Traveler. The race inside knew they were not going to win so they looked out into the stars and saw us. They saw a hope and resilience in humans and knew that if they could reach us and protect us, giving their last bit of life to hold back The Darkness, we would one day find a way to defeat The Darkness once and for all. But that is just a theory :)
