I keep hearing good things about Apex but I don't want to play that game because it's focused on battle royale, and I don't like the battle royale experience, especially in a first person shooter. There are other FPS games I could be playing but nearly all of them are either dead and/or tied to terrible companies. Note too that people like Apex Legends because of how it manages to have so much diversity in an IP for so long, compared to like Netflix shows that tend to cancel lots of shows with LGBT+ representation over lack of viewers.
Destiny 2 is like the only game I can identify that has sometimes similar player numbers on Steam to Apex Legends. I'm not sure about Bungie's reputation, as a company maintaining a AAA FPS that consistently has at least 50k daily players, but I hear that Respawn seldom implements crunch, and their worst issues generally revolve around Apex and EA. Other similar companies in comparison are much worse - Epic Games has had to refund $500m over inadequately observing privacy laws and over accusations that their game is "too addictive", and I will not bring up ActiBlizz's specifics because it may break the rules of this forum.
I'm also starting to find Apex's BR-only success a bit offensive at this point - why can't a non-shooter with even more diversity than Apex like Sims 4 do better than Apex, when not everyone wants to risk feeling terrible about themselves just to be the last player/squad standing, and there are people who aren't really into shooter games? The Sims 4's potentially infinite diversity (save for it still being rather ableist sadly) could help teach Netflix a lesson for constantly canceling shows with gay women as leads because of lack of viewers. There's entire communities on Twitter who are into Apex who are not playing the game, because they're far more interested in the diversity than the high stakes and overall punishing nature of battle royale.
What can be done here?
