I keep hearing good things about Apex but I don't want to play that game because it's focused on battle royale, and I don't like the battle royale experience, especially in a first person shooter. There are other FPS games I could be playing but nearly all of them are either dead and/or tied to terrible companies. Note too that people like Apex Legends because of how it manages to have so much diversity in an IP for so long, compared to like Netflix shows that tend to cancel lots of shows with LGBT+ representation over lack of viewers.
Destiny 2 is like the only game I can identify that has sometimes similar player numbers on Steam to Apex Legends. I'm not sure about Bungie's reputation, as a company maintaining a AAA FPS that consistently has at least 50k daily players, but I hear that Respawn seldom implements crunch, and their worst issues generally revolve around Apex and EA. Other similar companies in comparison are much worse - Epic Games has had to refund $500m over inadequately observing privacy laws and over accusations that their game is "too addictive", and I will not bring up ActiBlizz's specifics because it may break the rules of this forum.
I'm also starting to find Apex's BR-only success a bit offensive at this point - why can't a non-shooter with even more diversity than Apex like Sims 4 do better than Apex, when not everyone wants to risk feeling terrible about themselves just to be the last player/squad standing, and there are people who aren't really into shooter games? The Sims 4's potentially infinite diversity (save for it still being rather ableist sadly) could help teach Netflix a lesson for constantly canceling shows with gay women as leads because of lack of viewers. There's entire communities on Twitter who are into Apex who are not playing the game, because they're far more interested in the diversity than the high stakes and overall punishing nature of battle royale.
What can be done here?

1 ReplyEdited by Bishop0123: 1/10/2023 6:40:56 PMWhat is your point here? Is it that your perplexed that apex has less players than destiny (a series with 7 YEARS of fans) and think that apex should have more players, that the sims should have more love than both. Or is it some really confused Segway into how bad companies don’t deserve money and some tangent about “diversity” and “representation”. Your post is very very strangely written and reading it feels like having a fever dream. Please elaborate on your questions in a “to the point” numbered format so I don’t have a stroke trying to answer them.

Maybe a battle royal but that will be a bad idea

1 ReplyEdited by Cultmeister: 1/8/2023 11:38:48 AMThis is a very confused post. I’ll ignore most of it as I don’t play apex and don’t plan to, and focus on one specific point that confused me the most. What on earth translates between Sims and Netflix? Netflix cancels thousands of shows based on poor viewing figures; if a lot of them happen to have LGBT female leads then maybe they just need better writers? Sims as a franchise has its dedicated player base that EA have built up for over 20 years. Nobody is buying a sofa skin for $30 who hasn’t already got a lot of skin in the game. In terms of diversity, well the whole point of the sims is that you can make the characters however you want, so it has all sorts of things built in to the very fabric of the game. Netflix has to consistent push out brand new stories that people will watch, and I guess they just don’t know how to do that with certain sections of the community. Regarding disability specifically, every form of media has a massive issue with lack of diversity in this area; while certain shows/films/games are good at it, they’re notable because there’s so little else out there.

Reddit post refers to this: https://www.polygon.com/platform/amp/2019/4/23/18507750/fortnite-work-crunch-epic-games I just found these articles and I'll be sad, angry and disappointed if Bungie has worse controversies than Respawn (IDK how much crunch they have to implement, but Respawn's one of the most successful to seldom use crunch from what I've heard). Until Apex Legends has a good and permanent non-BR experience (i.e. NOT Arenas), I want that game to suffer and I want Respawn to be pressured to offer something in place of Arenas as permanent. I am NOT giving Respawn additional hours and any amount of money towards Apex Legends - today I spent money on Destiny 2 even though it's never really been necessary for me. Until then I also want Destiny 2 to do far better than Apex Legends - there were days when this game could regularly reach 100k players on Steam.

4 RepliesNot possible. Apex is fully f2p (excluding cosmetics) and it’s a very casual game that’s literally just pick up n play, no time sink or planning needed. I mostly quit playing it awhile ago because it’s too sweaty (mm thinks im a mlg elite superstar) so now I only play every once in a while with friends.

7 RepliesI'm not understanding the crux of your questions. Both the title and the last sentence. I'm also not sure what "this" refers too in the title; Destiny 2, Sims. Regardless, needs clarification.

3 RepliesSimple. They are different types of game which people enjoy. Not all people are the same and will have a like/hate for different games even in the fps market. You might hate a certain game but there are thousands who do. A good percentage will play a mix of games not limiting themselves just to one game. Play what you like.
