I'm convinced that it was faked. The footage we usually associate with the lunar landing was a stage production. Stanley Kubrik is usually credited with directing the production. The Van Allen radiation belts seem the most problematic to me. I don't know how any sort of radio signal would make it through without extreme noise and interference, making communication impossible. We have issues broadcasting to satellites and back within the belts. How are we supposed to have decent transmissions outside and through them? It makes sense that the US would want to pretend they’d gone to the moon if they couldn’t do it in time, just to ‘win’ against the Russians, but whether it actually happened doesn’t really matter anyway as it was all just a pen measuring contest anyway.
