As a Destiny 1 day 1 player I have poured an immense amount of time into both games. I've seen Destiny change and evolve through out its nearly 6 year life span and with every update I felt the game was getting a little better. Recently, however, the changes that have been made as well as the changes that are planned to be made not only insult the personal time players have put into the game, but almost punishes them for even playing.
The removal of skill based matchmaking in the crucible was intended to reduce search times and get players into matches quicker, and after scores of matches I've barely even noticed a difference in the time I'm in que. To make things worse; the drastic difference I've observed makes the crucible unenjoyable and infuriating. I'd like to think I'm a fairly above average player when it comes to skill in PVP, but the absolute GODS I've gone up against match after match are on a completely different level. I am consistently put up against teams full of players that are above my skill level by such a wide margin it's comical.
Sunsetting, while already introduced, hasn't taken full effect. Yet. While all gear in the game has an overall maximum level, all still have a level cap equal to this season's. After this season though, all the gear we've worked for, bent over backwards for, and in some cases spent an egregious amount of resources for will be made impractical and useless for 90% percent of the activities in the game. A prime example of this for me personally is the Not Forgotten. Some of you afore mentioned PVP GODs might be saying "what are you talking about, that gun was a breeze to get..." NOT. FOR. ME. This gun was introduced back when Forsaken first launched in season four. I didn't get it until the very last day of the Season of Dawn a.k.a. Season nine. It took me over a year to get this Hand cannon. That is well beyond the lifespan sunsetting will force onto players, and I would have had no reason or even incentive to work as hard as I did. An additional example is the Felwinter's Lie quest; this pursuit was bugged for almost a month before we could finish it. While I acknowledge the time and effort it takes to identify, diagnose, and patch a bug as wells as the hardships brought on by the current pandemic, why would we even bother to even obtain a weapon with a broken quest if we're just going to be forced to cast it aside for something more feasible or essentially a reskin? Sunsetting is meant to stimulate gear diversity, and eliminate power creep, but all it does is remove all incentive to put any effort into obtaining any gear, and spit on the personal time players have put into the game to obtain said gear. On a side note, I agree something needs to be done, but sunsetting is just an insult.
While there are other things I take issue with, such as mods only are able to be equipped on armor from a three season range, I will only "critique" one last thing, that being the Destiny content vault. The DCV will essentially gut the game and it's activities. It will remove at least four destinations, all but two of the raids, and any quests or story content associated with them. That's just naming a few; Strikes, Crucible maps, crucible game types, and more all go into the vault in November. Two of my favorite parts of this game are the Red War and Forsaken storylines, neither will be playable when the DCV goes live. This tactic allows for old content to be reintroduced as new, and it's very probable that future seasons and expansions will now just yank an old activity or location out of the vault instead bringing actual new content to the game.
All of these changes have been/will be made to reduce the amount of strain on the dev team whenever an update is introduced or a bug is discovered. Luke Smith's tactic is to make the game smaller, therefore more manageable for the team. Instead of punishing the players playing the content and using the gear THEY GAVE US, Bungie needs to not make the game smaller, but themselves bigger. Expand, hire on new staff members, or partner with other studios. Don't make the game more manageable, make yourselves more capable of managing it. Not once have I ever considered walking away from this game or it's predecessor, but the direction Luke is driving it down has made me legitimately consider it.
P.S. I know from experience that certain people will have the unwelcome response of "Stop complaining, if you don't like what's happening in the game, play something else," and to that I have something for them to think about; Have you ever considered that we don't want to play something else? We enjoy playing Destiny now and want to continue playing it in the future. We don't want to see all the time and effort we've put into this game wasted by simply going to another, but the direction the game is headed might force us to.
