rtx 2070, intel core i7-8700k lower fps than expected.

Hey everyone. Just a quick question to run by. I just recently upgraded my pc from a gtx 1070 with an intel I7-7700k to an rtx 2070 with an intel I7-8700k. Though this is a clear upgrade(though not a huge one) I am getting basically the same fps that I was getting before. Granted, this is on ultra quality in both cases, but I was under the impression that I should've been able to get my refresh rate of my monitor(144hz) pretty much constantly at 1080p. While my fps generally stays above 100 most of the time, it always drops below that in certain places like the tower. I just wanted to see know if this is a common occurrence, or if I actually have a problem on my hands. Destiny is just such a beautiful game, and it annoys me that I cannot get the most out of it on a very expensive pc.

  • The game is truly poorly optimized so don’t waste your time. It’s not you, it’s the game. To test how crappy it is, go to everis, and scroll through the pages slow and fast. Watch your fps drop to a mere 30-40 fps. As above person said, if you’re solo mission or strike, it’s fkn awesome. The rest, it’s a flip of the coin. I have a 3700x and a 1080ti.

    • When the tower instance you are in is full, you will likely see a big drop in FPS. In Crucible 6v6, the FPS can be all over the place but Comp or a solo private game, will likely be smooth a silk. I can only put this down to networking problems. This game is bloated and is getting worse every season, IMO. Your rig is very powerful and should be able to handle a relatively old DX11 game with power to spare.

    • I have an i7 9700 and 1660ti set to 1080p most settings maxed. I get between 70 and 140 fps (occasional spikes to 170ish) in patrol zones and up to 210 in isolated areas like Lost Sectors and Strikes. You should get at least that and probably better as the 2070 is a more powerful card. I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but I only game on this computer so it's very streamlined. I have a Mac for everything else.

The game has lost a lot of optimization over the last year due to how bulky the game is now. I own an 8700k with a water cooled 1070ti and I hover at 110. I’ve owned this card since the game launched and I used to max at 144 on 1440p all the time. But poor optimization over the last 2 years has caused the game to get sort of bloated. Shadowkeep may improve things, but bear in mind that a high fov and things like motion blur and bloom will bring down your frames a lot in this game
