Back when I was in school, it was used as an insult towards goths, emos, and the like. All the people that wore dark clothes and were melancholy and what not.
I've also seen it used towards people trying too hard to be cool and stuff like the "Nothing Personnel, Kid," meme.
Now it seems to just get thrown around at everyone. Mostly towards people just being assholes...
So, what even the hell does it mean?

it's when you have 2 sets of keys, and you leave one in the car.

4 RepliesThis is very definition of "edgy" and or "weeb"

It means a person who is contrarian and/or offensive on purpose, but it's not a troll for them, it's just how they are.

You wanna know who’s really edgy?
All fortnite gamers
7 RepliesI always consider it to be used in regards to idiots trying to hard to look cool and using sharp wit that is actually dull as hell.

Edgy years ago: Something or someone trying too hard to be cool, almost to a point where it's cringe worthy. Edgy now: ...a word that annoying internet gooers type when they see anything negative they don't like.

3 RepliesWalking the line between the rules. Like Shadow the Hedgehog saying damn and using firearms. Meant to appeal to older audiences that way. So it's a combination of walking the edge of social norms and rules (dark/shock humor) and/or trying to be "hardcore."

It’s just a boomer word at this point

7 RepliesGoogled it and found something that really annoyed me:
at the forefront of a trend; experimental or avant-garde.
How the hell can something be simultaneously at the forefront of a trend, AND experimental? The two directly contradict each other! Oh, and I'll tell you something else that annoys me about use of the word 'edgy:' Why do so many people use that word as an insult to any work of art that's even slightly dark? Are they really that closed minded?

Edited by Crackerjack: 3/12/2019 4:02:27 PMThe general meaning is someone or something that violates social norms without any real understanding of the significance of doing so. It's also used as a way of deriding naive teenage angst. Obviously who or what qualifies as "edgy" is going to depend heavily on who you ask.

I can’t think of a time where I saw it just being thrown around. It’s always been consistent in its use. Just personal experience.

4 RepliesReminds me of all the idiots who constantly misuse the word "irony."

I used to get called edgy all the time for dressing in primarily dark colors, mainly black. People thought I was trying to look cool or some shit, it’s just how I dress, I don’t look good in much else and bright colors hurt my eyes.

1 ReplyI always think of that one quote from Watchmen, where Rorschach talks about how society, wallowing in its own decay, will shout "save us!" and he'll whisper "no". Dude had a neato mask but he was kind of an edgelord.

2 RepliesPeople trying to be cool, or dark is the way I’ve always seen it. I think it originally started as just goth/dark, but a lot of the time being “cool” involves being dark, so it extended to being “cool” too.
