Everytime I try to play D2 after about an hour I get some sort of networking error it gets annoying when it happens consistently everytime when I'm in the middle of a strike and typically when it happens end up playing a different game that is more reliable, you know Bungie the least that you can do is give us dedicated servers that would be a perfect first step to provide a reliable connection P.S. I only play PVE

1 ReplyIn addition to cost concerns (which yes, do apply to AAA devs, they don't get carte blanche): Theoretically P2P can lead to lower latency if the players are clustered geographically. If I'm playing with my friends in Phoenix, it's a lot faster to send packets directly to their machines than to send them to e.g. Colorado and back. The advantage is even more apparent when you're dealing with, say, Australia, who historically get -blam!-ed in their server choices. This assumes, of course, that the host has enough upload to send packets to everyone, which isn't set in stone. You have to then build your game around this, which limits how much can be actually going on. Even worse, Bungie went with a full mesh network for PvP, i.e. every player sends packets to every player. It sounds like a terrible idea. Frankly, I'd think that they're idiots, but it takes more work to do that than to keep what they had in Destiny 1, so there must be some benefit.

Dedicated servers are more consistent, but that doesn't always mean better. Peer to peer could offer better connections if matchmaking was primarily based on geography. But that only really works for a very large player base. Plus dedicated servers are very expensive. Good IT always is. Considering their love of micro transactions and their distaste for quality development, do you really think they'd choose the more expensive plan?

MONEY. Or, as Luke Smith put it "Dedicated servers are just not in the business model for Destiny 2."

Well, dedicated servers have a heavy aim issue currently according to halo 5 forums. They aren't valve.
