Riddle me this fellow Guardians...

...so about this story. Why didn't Ghaul go after the CORRUPTED shard of the Traveler for his powers? Apparently everyone knows about it. That rock seems a lot less discerning than the Traveler and apparently all you have to do is kill some dregs and stare at it. Why didn't we take the Vanguard Guardians to the shard to get their light back? That seems like it would have been helpful. Why didn't the Guardians fall back to the Iron Temple when the tower fell? Seems a hell of a lot more secure than a farm plus it already has all of our shit there. While we are on the topic of the the Iron Lords where's Efrideet? Also, while we are on the topic of missing characters... where's the Stranger? When is she going to get some time to explain?! It's going on four years. So many questions...🤔 Please add your own questions below Edit: Apparently I missed this explanation that other players brought to my attention. Here’s Luke Smith speaking to Kotaku on their podcast: “At a point, just totally candidly, we had no idea what [The Darkness] was. Straight up, we had no clue. We didn’t know what it was. For a period, we chose we were going to lump all the races, and you can see this in the tool tips in the game: “Minions of the Darkness.” And we had taken all the races and said, ‘Ah, they just all be The Darkness.’ But that’s not what he IP deserves. It’s literally not. And so, what we’re doing with Destiny is we are deliberately telling a story about the Light and what it means to be chosen. And as such, we are in the process of removing the term “The Darkness” from the game because when we are going to talk about Darkness next, we need to know what it is and have a plan for it. And we do.” And before I analyze that, let me briefly pivot to something else being written out of the game, the arc of the Exo Stranger. Here’s Smith talking to PC Gamer: “We have a bunch of characters who are interesting, but the Exo Stranger is one that always makes me chuckle a little bit. Because I feel that’s one character where we actually wrapped up the arc. She gave you a sweet gun and then dissolved, presumably off to do something else. So I feel like, of all our characters we’ve introduced and exited, we actually exited her effectively So, I guess there's that...😕
for the full article https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2017/06/15/bungie-has-written-the-darkness-and-the-exo-stranger-out-of-destiny-2/
I don't know why the story in D2 is getting a praise as being more developed than in D1. More cutscenes, that's true, but the story itself is very shallow and forced and only used to accommodate the removal of all stuff we had in D1. It's really pathetic how quick and dumbed down the process of getting the light back is. D2 is trying too hard to be a simplified video game, when most of Bungie's consumers are adults and looking for deeper stuff.

      • Man this story pissed me off. Everything you said is true. The story made me laugh it was so childish. The Death of the speaker was freaking weak sauce. Fail Safe was annoying and childish. The raid makes zero sense. I hate the strikes. It’s just a bad game.

        • Didn’t Ghaul want the traveler to give him the powers rather than just take them? I’m sure he made a fairly big point of trying to prove himself so that he could become a light-wielding immortal. Then when he didn’t get what he wanted he took the light seemingly to rub it in the traveler’s face. It was also implied that the shard only had enough light to give to our guardian and that it chose our guardian specifically to give this dying power to. Also I don’t think we’ve seen the last of the stranger. No matter what they say.

          • My favorite part is how the LAST CITY has been destroyed but there is absolutely zero tension after the mission where we get our powers back, and then we defeat Gaul in a matter of hours. All Guardians lose their light but no one seems to have died who was of any significance at all. As a matter of fact, you wouldn't even know anything had happened story-wise at the end of the game seeing as how it returns to the D1 status quo but in a slightly different social space. Idk how the second mission (the one where you're following the hawk) is so good and really nails the tone of the story but the rest of the game is so disjointed from that. They told us the game would be a story about learning to fight without your light and we'd lose our powers but that was totally abandoned after the 2nd mission. I mean honestly the shard should have given us some wonky half-functional powers or only given ghost enough light to revive us after death and then we don't unlock our full power until defeating Gaul or something like that. Also no one died, the speaker doesn't count because he doesn't even have speaking lines outside vanilla D1 if I remember right. Everyone is perfectly fine, no one worry. The last city on earth was destroyed in a matter of minutes but the everyone in the city escaped somehow so it's no biggie. The BELIEVE campaign for halo 3 sold the "end of the world" tension far better than anything in Destiny, and that's Destiny's entire premise. The tone of the game should be dark and despair, not happy-go-lucky. Like i said the 2nd mission really sets the proper mood but the rest of the game ruins it.

              • Nah riddle me this. Why do we arrive to The Tower in crap armor and with no actual usable weapons besides a dinky-ass sidearm? Why didn't the Vanguard have a alarm go off that says, "Bitch, your satellites are gone!" Why didn't The Red Legion have The Shard on lock-down? Why didn't Ghaul shoot us in the face knowing our Light was gone? Why the hell did Ghaul, who's portrayed as being smart and strategic as hell, listen to The Speaker and suddenly decide to not take The Travelers power when he had the chance? How did a giant death fleet go unnoticed, even with out the satellites? Where was Dead Orbts Fleet with a warning? Where was Saladin during the retaking of The City? Why don't we have some say in how things work after all the "gods" and crap we've killed? Aren't Prime Servitors precious and rare as all hell? Why are their so damn many? There's a lot of crap that doesn make sense.....just covered by plot and plot-armor.

                • Why is the story written so that only 1 guardian is obtaining the light... when it’s actually every single guardian playing the game that you are in fire teams with, adventures, Strikes, Crucible, the farm... etc. makes no sense... sloppy story

                    • The story has some pretty big inconsistencies, or at least one. The main one being a result of ludo narrative dissonance. Which revolves around you and only you having the light. The other is the lack of weight behind the idea of death in the game. They all speak of it and how it is bad, but nothing is really showing you that. Classic case of not using the show don't tell rule. The game should have been a typical linear campaign until you completed it. Have friendly AI in the game, namely regular humans. Seeing them die gives that idea weight. Especially if you could let them use your weapons, as they do help you. It makes you care for them on some level, rather than being told to care. The other issue was what character you play as. They want you to be the previous guardian from D1 and possibly all the dlcs to that. At the same time though they want you to be fresh out of the story. Where it fails is when it mixes the two up. They should have either just written you with as the one from before with all the other events. That or been more conscious of those dialogue choices, starting with asking the player if they played D1 and its dlcs. Something like that, maybe letting the player chime in during relevant parts in regards to our memory. That and not having that stuff in the pre made CG cut scenes, in other words the non interact-able static ones. It's a design oversight easily.

                    • Exo stranger should not be done yet. The no time to explain has the words “Soon” etched onto it. I would believe that is was Praedyth who did that, but this gun is a modified version of the strangers I thought.

                                    • More importantly, why didn't the Vanguard go visit the shard? They scattered all over the solar system, came back and hung out at the Farm, but couldn't take a two-mile hike over to snatch up some Light before storming the City? How did this conversation never happen: Cayde-6: "So, uh, hey, got your Light back, huh? That's cool. How'd you do it?" Guardian/Ghost: "Oh, a piece of the Traveler fell off, I just touched it. It's just down this path through a few trees. Like, at night you can see it from this window you're standing in." Cayde-6: "Hey, Zavala, come 'ere, need to show you something!" Also, if Ghosts require Light to function (indicated-but-not-fully-supported by Ghost falling during the initial encounter with Ghaul, then somehow still flying around the ruins), what was the deal with Cayde's Ghost poking up on Nessus?

So many questions...🤔
Well, nobody actually knew about the corrupted shard to be honest, you were the only guardian who got their powers back and you never told anyone how you did it. Not even Ghual knew how you did it, which is why he asked the speaker about it, which the speaker just said something vague pertaining to "the light will always find a way" leading me to believe that not even the Speaker knew how you did it. It's possible that the shard just doesnt have nearly as much power as the full Traveler, so Ghual was after the bigger prize and ignored the shard entirely. I'm not sure why they didnt go to Felwinter Peak. I mean, it was a secret fortress to begin with, hidden in the side of a mountain, but perhaps the guardians needed to get as far away as possible and Felwinter Peak was still in eye shot of the City, so that wasnt a good idea. Efrideet only returned for the Iron Banner and talked about her friends in the outer worlds. Perhaps she went back and just happened to be there for these events, but she's definately still around. Bungie claim's that the Stranger's story is finished, but I think that's horse shit. I'd like to know about her too tbh :/

The status of both was left a little bit vague after The Taken King. Was Rasputin in any way effected by the Red Legion invasion? Will we ever meet Lysander, former leader of the Concordat faction? Where is Eris Morn? She's not been seen since the fall of the tower. Who is 'her Queen' that she refers to when touching Oryx's fallen sword after the end of TTK campaign?
