Why returning players are complaining

People are complaining because bungie had 3 years to work out what worked and what didn't work, and most of the stuff that worked and players enjoyed was removed from the game in D2. By the end of D1 they had added core mechanics that are core mechanics such as strike scoring, strike medals, strike specific loot, being able to choose a game mode in Pvp and to be honest this has been a core feature in any FPS for the last 7 years. The list goes on. Bungie stated themselves that D1 was a sort of test/trial to see what the game could be. By the end of year 3 they should have had a good idea of what worked. Then suddenly dropped half of it. The fear players are having now....'is all this stuff it took 3 years and 3 DLC to achieve going to take that long and that many DLCs to return if at all' D2 should have all the core mechanics that players loved in D1 and then all the new stuff from D2 on top of that. Story and worlds are a good size that doesn't have to change just the basic mechanics it took so long to achieve in the first place. Lost sectors should have specific loot or at least planetary loot, adventures should offer better gear because there actually pretty fun. There should be very little or no reskined weapons and armor in the game, faction rally is coming up and it's almost all reskins. If a player who stopped playing destiny after vanilla returns in D2 there going to be presented with the same thing. They miss out on the transformation destiny went through and the final product. This is a sequel, sequels are supposed to bring something new to the table and right now bungie have not delivered this. I'm not complaining because I hate the game. It's the opposite. I and many others see the unbelievable Potential in this game that bungie keep missing the mark on. Especially in D2 because this time we have seen what bungie are capable off. I don't want destiny to become a game like COD where I settle for the same thing every time. Where is the horde mode? Where is the large team battles? Where is the secret exotic missions? Where is the 'new'

i think people are hating it because it caters to casuals and not the hardcore fan base Destiny had. D2 is kind of a middle finger to all the players that stuck with destiny from vanilla. D2 has removed the grind, the rarity of exotics and legendaries, random rolls and made the crucible boring by reducing the impact an individual can have on a match by a large amount. All these things are what Destiny 1 players whether they admit it or not stuck around for which, a large portion are coming to realise. The moment you got your first exotic, probably from a raid chest in the vault of glass, the grinding for crucible marks to be able to buy that sweet devil you know from the vendor, its all gone. Destiny 2 is hollow compared to D1. Exotics actually made a difference and added to play styles like the bones of eao, twilight garrison etc. Exotic weapons were actually awesome and did cool stuff (last word and lord high fixer you were my babies for 3 years :’( ) . Shotguns, snipers and even fusion rifles added huge outplay ability in crucible. Weapon perks were actually important. Which i personally thought was awesome. From LitC to hidden hand and counterbalance. D2 removed the RNG from the exciting parts of the game and placed it on boring parts such as shaders and armor mods. Int, Dis and str removed and replaced with resilience, mobility and recovery. Recovery being the only one that actually makes a reasonable amount of difference. Just seems like Destiny 2 took the good parts of Destiny and restructured it for casuals and people who complained that shotguns and snipers were op. i personally enjoyed listening to music and collecting spin metal. Making the game easy and forgiving and the limited amount of “unexciting fixed perk weapons” dropping every 5 mins removes the fun of loot drops. yes the story is better. but its not a good story, pretty linear and uninspired. The raid is pretty meh and i have zero idea as to why bungie thought that making the raid 20 “power” below max was a good idea is pretty insane to me. Especially considering the raid and the nightfall are the only places where light level matter. the raid should of been based around 300 light and should of dropped 300-315 gear. same as the prestige nightfall. People that complain that they shouldn’t have to do the raid and prestige nightfall to hit max power are insane and should be ignored. Zero reason to hit max power unless its to do the raid and nightfall in the first place. Circling back to crucible the ttk on weapons is too slow. the crucible as a whole is nothing like D1s fast paced gameplay which seems like a weird move to make when there was a fairly large pvp community that played non stop. Removing Destiny crucible and replacing it in Destiny 2 with this cheap Halo-esque seems pretty counter intuitive. I mean if people wanted to play halo pvp we’d just buy halo instead?

    • Imagine the world's and pve from destiny 2 WITH all the improvements we had in game from destiny 1...now that's a game of the year candidate right there... For example, I lived in the strike playlist in d1 since vanilla... Most people would just switch to pvp but me? I ran strikes, heroic strikes with fun mods that encouraged playing different subclasses, using different exotics, getting skeleton keys and high level strike loot...but in destiny 2, I did the strikes to unlock nightfall and that's about it...

        • Man, for being a video game this sure has made a lot of people overly emotional. Destiny 2, is not Destiny 1. If you like your old toy and are pissed because your new toy is not EXACTLY like your old toy, go back and play with your old toy. Or STFU! My god, what cry babies are on these forums and play this VIDEO GAME.

        • Bungie has already said those things you see that are missing in D2 will be rolled out over time. Maybe not all of them, but they're following the same formula as D1. I'm enjoying everything there is in D2 at the moment and find the loot sectors to be some of best parts in the game. I agree with having specific planetary loot. The part that I wish was fixed still isn't. That is the exotics we receive as engrams and as either chest finds or drops from enemies. There still doesn't appear to be an algorithm that detects what other exotic gear you have. I've received multiples of both weapons and armor over the past couple of days. That needs to be addressed.

        • All of the changes they’ve made have been to streamline D1 mechanics. And there were so many convoluted systems in place in D1, all of which I ended up ignoring in the long term. Strike scoring/medals were there to facilitate strike bounties. Bounties are gone, but the fun aspect of the medals is still there in form of challenges. Strike specific loot I feel torn about. Instead we have planet specific loot without the old grind of getting matchmade into Dust Palace three times back to back when you’re really after a Grasp of Malik. But exclusive gear does give a huge incentive to play strikes, so... Locked weapon rolls, I’m a huge fan. Again thinking long term, I don’t need 5 different skinned auto rifles with the same exact stats. That’s just the illusion of variety. If anything we should be encouraging their direction introducing new weapon types (but seriously, where’s my machine gun?!), and push for more weird, fun future weapons. I assume their approach to crucible is to minimize MM times, but yeah, that’s a weak excuse. To me it feels like they trimmed the fat, and in the process got rid of a lot of things (for the most part) I loathed anyway. Also, I totally agree that lost sectors need tweaking. They don’t feel nearly as tough and mysterious as they were hyped up to be. It’s definitely a step up from a lone knight in a tiny cave room, but still. They could be much tougher and with better rewards. Aside from all of that, I feel like their main direction with D2 is extending content over time. They’re thinking long term. And that’s what I’m most curious about. Will we get new quests/adventures? How far will these heroic public events evolve? How will factions play out? What other seasonal/mini events do they have up their sleeves? Will the Stranger finally have time to explain?! To me it’s not about power level, badges of honor, or even loot (gasp!), it’s about variety of activities to choose from while socializing with friends. And as far as that goes, I feel like they’re off to a good start.

          • You know what really grinds my gears about Destiny 2's playerbase? Saying how Destiny 2 has an AMAZING STORY!!! To be completely fair, yes it did have a better story than Destiny 1, but at the same time, it felt like D2's story was rushed. What would have made a very good story was if instead of getting your light back AFTER THE FIRST MISSION, you had to go through the world of Destiny without light, this would have been more credible to the Destiny 2 quote we kept hearing. "Welcome to a world without light." But no, just give our light back immediately so that we can rush the story and find out that we didn't even get to kill Gaul, the Traveler did, and Gaul was easier than a Bather in the Leviathan raid.

            • Returning players are not complaining, only a vocal minority are, dont speak for us all, thanks. So what if we can't choose whatever mode we wanna play, overwatch does the same thing and no one cares about that. Strike scoring and loot was pointless I never sought out that loot I just wanted to run a strike. And shaders, I'm not even going to go there, that's been done to death already. If you don't like it go back to d1 we won't miss you.

              • I've been into Destiny since the beta of the first game. It was only after the year one nerf that I really stopped playing regularly. Sure, I would go back to it for a bit when the DLC's launched, but for the most part it went by the wayside. Destiny 2 has brought me back in full force and I wasn't expecting to enjoy myself half as much as I am now. I only bought Destiny 2 because I play with my brother who bought his PS4 to play the first Destiny with me. I figured I owned him playing the second game as well. - I really enjoyed the story. - I'm enjoying the grind (currently have my Hunter at Power 266). - I'm enjoying the commendatory (co-op). - I'm enjoying the new flow --- Adventures, Quests, Patrols --- Engram decryption only on Legendary, Exotics and Eververse. --- Each planet (area) having specific sets of gear and leveling for specific characters. --- More shader options and more items able to use them. - I really like the new Hunter armor sets and unlike the first game have magically gotten many of the pieces of armor that I have wanted rather quickly. What I would like to see improved... - Pick the Strike you want to do. Yeah... so far that's it. I don't even mind the shader one-time-use issue that so many hate. It's been enough to convince me to buy the expansion packs; something I had no intention of doing. The only thing I can think of that might make me different from most of you is that I generally don't play PvP. I've never been one for PvP so its shortcomings don't really affect me.

                • You really expected bungie to listen and give you all what you wanted? The only reason y’all got what you wanted toward the end of D1 was because the player base in destiny was dropping faster than a freshly paid whore. They had to give you something to bring you back. How many times did bungie promise something and not deliver it? How many times did a DLC drop and it -blam!-ed up the entire leveling system for light/weapons/exotics? You truly expected bungie to give y’all a game that was gonna be better than D2? Bro, all bungie gives a f u c k about is your money. If you haven’t figured that out yes, your a f*cking idiot.

Last night my comment to my fire team as we were discussing 'what's missing?' Was that at the moment the game feels a little like you have gone to this beautiful restaurant and you're having an amazing time surrounded by great friends in this awesome atmosphere yet the food is 'meh'. Not bad but just 'meh' people ask you later 'How was the restaurant ?' What reply do you give?

                    • Personally having to grunt endlessly for a RNG chance to get the “good” version of a weapon was soul crushing. One weapon on stat puts more of an emphasis on skill level over perks. To me that makes things like crucible more fun.

                      • Bungie makes it easy to hate on Destiny. From going Vanilla again, reskins, only like 4 strikes, no tougher strike playlist, pathetic reward system for pretty much everything, no factions at launch, subpar raid, awful leveling system, removal of exclusive strike rewards, removal of machine guns, removal of random weapon perks, removal of leveling up weapons and armor, cost to add mods or shaders, limited use shaders, no game selection for crucible, still using peer to peer (ok technically hybrid, whatever it's still shoddy), and most importantly, going Vanilla and not having content to sustain play. As an MMO it needs content to sustain and again Bungie failed to deliver. I still think they seriously should have given us all of D1s planets & added these 4 moons for D2. Perhaps reworked some strikes giving us a decent number out the gate. PoE reworked and reskinned would be a nice option. They should have done something to leave us with a decent base and the content to keep things interesting and players busy. I'm disappointed in myself for continuously falling into this trap. DLC after DLC to now this where I bought the $100 digital copy of D2. Most of my friends aren't even likely to buy the DLC because we've been burned so many times by Bungie and Destiny. It seems greed has superseded their commitment to players/fans. They really need to start pumping some content out for this game. They really need to add a new strike playlist that is a higher power level and gives better rewards. They really need to start considering what's best for and what the players want and quit making bonehead changes that they think is good because it's clear Bungie and their decision making has been awful.

                          • I agree, at the end of Destiny 1 Bungie had found a way to balance the game for both hardcore and casual players. There were plenty of things added such as: Record books to appease the hardcore players, strike scoring to make strikes be more entertaining, daily missions that sometimes held secrets, daily Crucible playlists that promoted trying out all of the game modes, strike specific loot that encouraged players to play strikes, plenty of exotics to earn and plenty of fun exotic quests to complete, a large variety of weapons and armor allowing players to have a huge range of choices, weekly bounties for strikes and Crucible that give high-level rewards, etc. All of these features that I just listed are not in Destiny 2, not replaced, just not there. This makes the game feel empty, like there is stuff just missing from the game that should be there. That there is not really too much to really do once you finished the campaign, world quests, adventures and completed the raid once and maybe went Flawless. There is no incentive to continue playing as there is literally nothing to earn. The hunt for good rolls and amazing guns is gone. Bungie decided to have armor and weapon rolls be static, and have mods being the things players hunt to change the way their favorite gun feels. Too bad all of the mods are extremely generic and boring, offering very little to the battle field aside from maybe a faster super charge. Another problem with static rolls is that it got rid of that "good-roll-feeling". This wouldn't be a problem if it didn't feel like there were only like 12 guns in the entire game that you get 14 of, all being the exact same.

                          • D1 was a game 7 years in the making, and it was a massive disappointment in nearly every category at launch. The vast majority of the people behind great games like Halo and Oni were gone, and it took this new cast of developers 3 years to salvage what they could and present something mildly better (outside of pvp of course - they just kept actively breaking that every few months). The Destiny series in and of itself is doomed to constantly disappoint. This is not the same company that basically created MLG with Halo 2. This is not the same company that created an overnight success with the Master Chief. This is now the company of Luke Smith, who thinks selling you the same game over again at twice the price with emotes will have you "throwing money at your screen". If you could not tell, I loved Halo. Reach, IMO, was Bungie's last "good" game (and that is an understatement - it was a fantastic game). But that was a different era.
