May I rephrase this into a more concise post, after reconsidering some of my points:
Destiny 1 strikes were enjoyable (at least to me). I spent hours in the Vanguard playlists. Strikes originally came in the form of harder missions throughout the campaign that required a fireteam to beat and featured a boss at the end. Nightfalls were very difficult endgame activities which required great patience, skill and a good fireteam and rewarded you appropriately.
In Destiny 2, I don't enjoy what has become of what used to be my favourite activities. Let me explain:
The Nightfall
- My greatest concern with the nightfall is this new timer. It's a load of rubbish. In this current Inverted Spire Nightfall, the best strategy is to run about or run round in circles and only kill what you have to in order to get to the rings. The nightfall in Destiny 1 took a long time to complete, and now Bungie are forcing you to skip parts of it to keep up with the timer.
- You can all die. It's fine; just wait to respawn. You don't get sent back to orbit, however because of the timer, obviously it's better to make us wait 20 seconds to respawn rather than go back to orbit for cocking up.
Strikes
- They are useless. The strike playlist is now at 140 power, with a required power level of 12. The loot you get caps at 265.
- No more opening dialogue? The story is (vaguely) told throughout, but I miss that opening dialogue which gave a brief overview of what on earth you were doing before you even spawned.
- Loot. No strike-specific loot, which was a reason to stay in the vanguard playlists in D1. Now, what's the point in the playlist when there isn't any strike specific loot.
- Exodus Crash. In my opinion this strike is so bloody bad that it deserves a separate point. The boss is arguable amongst the worst designs since D1's launch, taking the form of a giant Vandal who you can damage for 10 seconds before he disappears and then re-appears again a few seconds later. There are awkward moments when your fireteam just stand still, wondering what to do whilst the boss has disappeared. It ruins the 'epic' boss fight.
- Sarathun's Song, the boss is another bullet sponge. In fact, Exodus and Sarathun are both examples of what NOT to do with strikes, and are a step backwards on the improved strikes that we got in TTK.
- Very bias rotation, it's not fun to rotate between two strikes in an hour.
- There aren't that many strikes.

They should drop skeleton key that rewards nightfall tier drop every while as in D1, so you could do 5-10 stikes but that will guarantee high light reward. The skeleton keys were good addition in D1.

Bump, when D1 came out strikes were legitimately the only thing I did, very very enjoyable to me. Now I wouldn't do one unless I had to which could honestly be that I just got tired of the basic mechanics if any but I have highly fond memories of strikes the first year of destiny and even the taken King
-
Wish I didn't agree, but I do....very much so
-
That hobgoblin boss fight is pathetic as well, no where near enough enemies spawn. Every boss fight is boring as hell. Loved strikes in d1 but they've made a royal cock up with d2 imo

2 RepliesIt's still early days with Destiny 2, i can see it eventually balancing out to be better. Strikes in 2 are interesting, i've only just done all the available ones and i thought they were decent.

1 ReplyStrikes have taken a MAJOR step back in D2, it's really the only thing I'm willing to truly 'bitch' about. From standard strikes straight to the NF I'm disappointed. No more heroic strikes, no more Weekly challenges from Zavalla, no more scoring system and no strike specific loot. Not to mention NF strikes take less time and effort than standard strikes which absolutely makes zero sense to me. They put in a scoring system to stop speed running in D1 just to make it a staple in D2. Some of us don't raid or do PVP, so this is our bread and butter. The raid has 8,000 puzzles but I can't get a damn heroic strike. Sigh.
-
The gear you get from turning in tokens to Zavala are the actual strike reward. Generally come in abt 5 or 10 above your current drop level, and the vanguard weapons are generally preferred
-
i think ive only played strikes about 4 times lol

3 RepliesI don't mind the timer for the NF too much but it means I can't solo anymore. I think the timer should probably be higher though so that you can naturally work your way through a strike instead of just trying to avoid mobs and get to 'check points' asap. Having the timer means you can't just pick enemies off at max scout range until there's no threat, which I think is a good restriction. I agree the actual boss fight of Exodus Crash is trash but I find the rest of the strike very interesting to play through. The boss fight just ends up being shank control, unload all ammo at boss, stand around until shanks spawn, repeat. It is very boring. Blight Lake boss fight is extremely boring to me also but I think that's just due to the room you fight in. A lot of stuff in D2 feels like progression with previous improvements and function removed. Being able to pick what I want to play should always be a basic feature. Activity specific loot (and random gear perks) give activities longevity. Patrols were improved greatly, strikes have been downgraded slightly, and crucible feels like salvage on giant maps (stick together or die). PS: I'd like to be able to see what my daily strike, crucible, planet challenges are before I start the activity. It's the little things like this (and activity options) that are missing from D2 that make the game feel off. If I knew what to do beforehand then the whole list getting interrupted mid-activity because I wasn't at max glimmer wouldn't be as annoying.
-
Yeah the strikes suck they're way to easy after 230 power. The nightfall is lame cause like you said it's just a speed run and you don't have to worry about dying and get sent back to orbit. There's no real challenge to it now.
-
I don't think you have been doing strikes if you don't know what they are about the whole strike is a story
-
As someone for whom Strikes were my favorite part of the game in D1, I think the /design/ of the Strikes in D2 are (mostly) great. If you think they don't tell stories, you are crazy- Savatun's Song, especially, is a great, disturbing little piece of writing, and even without getting any worthwhile rewards from it, I always enjoy playing it. The only Strike I think is kind of a failure is Exodus Crash. Drive through a bunch of light columns and then fight a boss? It's way too easy, it's not exciting, and the boss is a huge pain in the ass while not actually being very difficult. That one exception aside though, I think they did a great job- the two best being Savatun's Song and The Pyramidion, which features some of the best visual level design in the entire game. That said, the /rewards/ of the Strikes need some definite work. I totally agree there. Once you get past 265, there's literally no reason to do them unless they are the Nightfall, other than just for the fun of it. What this game sorely needs is Strike Specific loot. In D1, I would happily grind Strikes for /hours/ trying to get that unique helmet or cloak to drop from the boss. This game needs that kind of temptation to keep us coming back to the Strikes. The items don't even need to be powerful- just unique and cool looking.
-
2 RepliesHold on. The loot in strikes isn't capped at 265. I was getting 288 yesterday and I'm at 295.
-
Only issues I have with them is they're a little lengthy and rewards are meh.
-
3 RepliesWith everyone saying strike specific loot, the only problem is now it's one and done. I loved strike specific loot cause it was unique items and you could grind to get those perfect rolls. Now... once you get it, that's it. No point in grinding after that. It would only add 5 new guns to the game (more is never worse) but it just wouldn't be the same as grinding for that fatebringer imago. This coming from a guy who spent as much time in the strike playlist than most people spend in the crucible.
-
3 RepliesEdited by Abrrinacave: 9/18/2017 5:25:42 PMI agree about the strike playlist But I LOVE the new nightfall. You actually play on the offensive. None of that hide in the back and take 30 minutes to kill a boss BS. The timer system is cool, and I like how each nightfall has a different time gain mechanic. It helps keep things fresh.
-
1 ReplyMy problem with strikes is the lack of heroic strikes and strike specific loot. They made good changes towards the end of destiny 1 only to strip it all away in destiny 2.
-
1 ReplyWhat they need is faction and vanguard xp like in destiny t 1, something to grind with at least a good chance of a decent reward every now and then, and some idea of what that reward will be
-
The game is a disaster
-
I agree. The only good strikes are pyramidion, inverted spire and arms dealer. Otherwise they take WAY TOO LONG. For the shitty rewards you get. The other bosses like the invis vandal, is so stupid. He goes away literally every time you touch him for more than a second and makes the damn boss fight drag out for a seeming eternity, the shrieker one is just flat out boring to fight, seems meaningless. In d1 strikes could be done in less than 30 mins and I miss that, the bosses could be melted without teleporting and becoming immune. It was simple fun. They -blam!-ed it up.
-
That and there's like 4 strikes total.
-
Edited by Aramis633: 9/18/2017 4:43:19 PM
There is no story in the strike...
This is obviously false and hurts your larger point. You'll note that there are well written replies easily proving this to be untrue. I suggest taking that line out of your post - and going back and playing the strikes with subtitles on if you haven't already so that you might better absorb the unique stories in each strike. If story really is a big point for you, you might find your view on the strikes improves significantly.

3 RepliesDo you play with your fkn TV on mute? In your inverted spire example.... What's going on it the Cabal were mining on Nessus and as they were drilling they poked a hole into a vex chamber, and discovered a powerful Vex Mind in there that they wanted to weaponize. So we, as guardians do, swopped in and -blam!-ed that idea all up. In the Pyramidion we are exacting revenge on the Genesis Mind to messing up ashers arm. In Exodus Crash we are pushing the fallen out of the Exodus Black so they don't mess up failsafe any more than she already is. In Arms Dealer we are stopping this smart cabal jackass from taking over the crusier that we disabled in the story and killing more people. In Savathun's Song many many guardians when missing under titan, we go in to look for them then stumble upon a summoning ritual that must be stopped. In the Lake of Shadows strike the taken have appeared in Trostland and have infected the water and food supply with their icky black goo, and if we don't do something many many people could get sick and die, or have to go without water and food. ALL OF THIS IS TOLD TO YOU DURING THE STRIKES!!!!
