This whole lore discussion...

So everybody and their dog seems to be arguing about the fact that Grimoire isn't going to be part of Destiny 2. Personally I come down on the side of the loss of Grimoire being a bad thing because it seems we risk losing out on the deeper lore without it, now lore is being given thtough scannables and dialogue and not text. However, those who disagree often seem to be missing some points. To clarify a few things: 1. No we do NOT have a problem with D2 having lore in the game. We all very much want to see an improvement in how available the lore is, since they are also improving the overall story and this will be beneficial for that. I repeat, more lore in the game is GOOD. 2. Yes, we understand Bungie has said the lore will be in the game, probably in the lore tab. What concerns us is that much of the deep lore of D1 was not something that could be neatly inserted into the game, and it might be that Bungie decide not to put lore like this into the game, or reduce and simplify it so it will fit in the format. We don't like that idea, as you can tell. 3. We do NOT want to stop people enjoying the story. Quite the opposite, the more people who can enjoy what Bungie has made, the better. As above, we want lore to be in the game for us all to find - we just also want to keep the stuff that really interests us. We definitely aren't out to hide the story from you or something. 4. We are aware that we don't know the details of how integrated lore in D2 will work yet. And, yes, there may be absolutely nothing for us to be worried about. However, since we have little to go on except what we have been told by Bungie, we are simply worried for the possibility that D2 doesn't offer what many of us are fond of from D1. 5. Forget about the YouTubers. Whether they care about the lore or just want to save their own channel is irrelevant. The actual player base that enjoys the lore doesn't have that problem - we just want the same, quality lore we love from D1. 6. We probably weren't the people who complained about Grimoire not being part of the game to begin with. Not sure why you think we are necessarily the same people. 7. We get that some of you don't care about lore. That's cool. Why this means we shouldn't care either is beyond me. We aren't asking you to stop enjoying the gameplay. So that is basically what I wanted to rant about. If I missed something my bad. And obviously I know most people are more reasonable and informed than the people I address this to. (And by 'We' I mean the reasonable part of the 'Grimoire is good for lore' argument, please go ahead and argue the unreasonable sort into the dirt if you like.) Edit: To clarify, I'm not pro-Grimoire per se; what I meant was that I'm for the Grimoire as a means of relaying lore to the community. I've amended some phrasing to make it clearer.

  • Bumgie ran out of weapons to nerf. So they nerfed the grimoire.

    • I'm so happy they are getting rid of the grimoire. This is a video game. And this is how lore is supposed to be viewed. Don't be salty because everyone will be able to see the story easily without having to read a bunch of text on a website.

      • I liked lore access on a tablet. Yes, destiny was bad at in game lore. I get that. But every big story game has grimmoire. Except, it's only accessible through the game. Mass effect had codex. Assassins creed has... I forget it right now but you read it in game. Elder scrolls had all those books to read. Why do I like grimmoire I can access outside the game? Cause I can read it at my leisure on a tablet. I liked that because I'm all honesty I really want to play while in the game, I hardly ever read the in game lore while gaming.

        • For all we know, they probably just meant grimoire score. In which case I don't want it gone. I am one of the few people who used grimoire score to get a rough idea on someone's time in Destiny. Now wait just a moment. Before you grab your pitch fork or torch to yell out "grimoire scored doesn't determine skill!. Don't confuse "skill" with "experience". I'll give you an example: You are at Aksis and need two more to finish the encounter. Guardian A joins with a grimoire score of 5135 and says: "I can handle middle" Guardian B joins with a grimoire score of 1540 and also says "I can handle middle". Which do you believe? The correct answer is A, but! This does not mean boot Guardian B. Rather, Guardian B might need some explanation/guide on how to complete raids. Without scoring, situations in which people claim to know what they're doing and end up wasting someone's time will become more common.

I've amended some phrasing to make it clearer.
I've spent over 2000 hours playing Destiny and have worked on lore since I've started ! Ghost where 1 of the most funniest things I've searched for in Destiny and the cards where my rewards for the jurney in my mind # My Destiny is to unlock all the cards to read and to exercise the knowledge of the past before the original game was released and to match the pieces together on what mite happen because of the imagination of hopefully predicting the future of how it all mite end and as far as Grimoire score helps, yes it shows how much experience a player has in how much we we can put on the plate for our schedule for the time we have to play the game , the younger kids don't bother me and I help my kids out with facts and realized I've been their but we can only help them learn and hold their hands through the whole Destiny ! In a raid we have match making now ,yes it's match making , the grimoire score should be the only thing that should and must pass to Destiny 2 = first because Nothing in our past has transfered to Destiny except out face ! And that is the only thing Bungie said would Transfer to Destiny 2 ? Why ? And Why ? Because if I can only bring my face , what was the Grind for ? For reals ? I loved the game and when I say that I mean I did love Destiny 1 and the Game will sit on my game shelf for ever but I have no other memory's to bring with me on my 10 year Destiny jurney ! I can say I won't spend as much money on Destiny 2 items or grind as much as I did on Destiny 1 which puts less hours and fun with the Freinds I had on Destiny 1 but I still hope for the best ! And I hope Bungie will bring our hopes with us !

              • I think people are over reacting to this whole thing. I loved reading the grimoire cards but if they implement them in the game, then I don't think there's a problem. Dark Souls is notoriously bad for story telling but the community has picked up the lore through item texts and in game details. If Bungie can do the same then I don't think lore is in as much trouble as people make it out to be. That said, we don't know enough about it and only time will tell. Hopefully it works out for the best.

                  • Well said. I enjoyed not just the Grimoire, I also enjoyed the calcified fragments and SIVA clusters. I just wished the Black Garden's heart had a Grimoire.

                  • It was stupid anyway, just a excuse for Destiny not to have a story in game. I'm glad they got rid of it, in flavor of more story telling.

                    • They could keep it and put it on the actual game. Putting the story on this app was one of the dumbest design choices I've ever seen.

                        • Until we get our hands on the game and actually see how much of what was in the Grimoire is actually brought into the game in terms of NPC given back story....and the in-game lore function for gear..... ...all of this is pretty pointless worry-mongering.

                        • Well they only said they were removing grimoire right? Did they ever say they were completely removing all types of lore outside the game or even maybe books (or whatever they use) in game? Because all I've been hearing is, "Oh noes they removed the annoying, out of place, and mostly confusing grimoire!". Haven't heard if they removed all non in game lore.

                        • TL; DR My take is that Bungie are removing Grimoire from D2. Grimoire cards were the story telling medium used in D1. Now there will be a new story telling medium, that is in game as opposed to reading cards on an external website. No mention anywhere that deep lore is being removed from D2. Scaremongering, hersay, conjecture, lack of facts and taking opinions too seriously have resulted in people wasting a lot of energy typing complete shit, myself included.

                        • If the lore is presented like the lore in horizon zero dawn d2 looks like it's going to be heading the right direction I get what you're saying that you want the mystery behind it where we can speculate about how everything ties together like the lore in d1 and I can sah I'm all for that it makes the lore more enjoyable.
