Too old for crucible?

Being 44, a father of 4, a business owner, husband and gamer can be tough. I try to enjoy crucible but I am honestly not good. I am better playing with randoms and embarrass myself when I try to play with my friends. I have spent hours practicing with different weapons and load outs, watched every video and streamer out there. I play better drunk !! ( Weird) I'm totally not used to failing at things. Any tips from good PvP players would be great. Maybe even some good coaching now that we have private matches!

  • Rumble. Learn when to push, how to enter engagements, and when to know you're just plain outplayed and don't waste supers/nades Learn when to run away. You'd be surprised at the number of double- and triple- downs you can get when three enemies with different agilities space themselves out nicely for you (especially true with a warlock recovery build) Cover all ranges. I run a NightStalker with MIDA and Eirene, but high Dis/Str and Young Ahamkara's Spine. My close in work is melee based, mid range is a high impact scout and at long range, my crosshairs aren't pulled across the screen by other enemies. Know the game mode. Kills vs scores, objectives and when to push on them. The number of times I've seen teams in Control capture two flags, then play Clash for the rest of the match, even if the other team get all three flags. Ain't gonna work, blueberries...

  • A 1.1 k/d is not bad. I enjoy crucible a lot lately and I'm holding a 1.1 k/d aswell. Trying private matches with a Friend is also really fun if you want to play casually.

Forty-eight year old professional here. Only been playing comp shooters for about three years, and pulling monthly K/Ds of about 1.25 these days. If you're playing better when you're drunk...then the problem is you're trying too hard. Or as golfers say, "You're getting in your way". You're trying to THINK your way through matches and do things **perfectly**.....instead of acting instinctively and athletically. All the alcohol is doing is making the thinking part of your brain shut up and get out of the way. Simple ways to get better at PVP 1. Discipline yourself to go for headshots. ALWAYS. This can easily be practiced in PVE. But 1v1 gunfights are DPS contests to see who can do the most damage the fastest. He who gets the most headshots in the shortest time....usually wins. 2. Learn to strafe. That is move back and forth unpredictably while shooting. This allows you to land your shots, while throwing off the aim of your opponent. This increases your chance of winning gunfights. THIS is the biggest mistake I see poor players make. They stand still while they're shooting....or they just come charging right at you....and they make themselves easy targets to anyone with 2 thumbs and reasonable coordination. 3. PLAY A LOT OF PRISON OF ELDERS/CHALLENGE OF ELDERS. Why? Because fighting in the tight confines fo those arenas will teach FAST how to control lines of sight, firing angles, (making yourself a small and difficult target) and how to control distances (so you stay within your weapon's optimal range, while forcing your opponent to fight at a range where he's at a disadvantage). As well as how to switch fluidly between engagements of different distances. I could try to explain how to do this to you in words....but it would turn into a wall of text...and still wouldn't do you the same sort of benefit as just making it part of your play routine to play in the hardest levels of the PoEs available. 4. If your playing 6s.....don't leave your wingman. Six v six play in the Crucible is about creating mismatches. You don't want to be in a "fair" fight. You want to press fights where you have the advantage (better firepower, optimal range, numerical superiority) , and avoid/disengage from fights where you're at a significant disadvantage. If you try to run and gun around the map as a solo----unless you're a bad-ass----you're die a LOT to team shooting. Especially in Iron Banner and other events where people team up because the game puts a premium on winning. Unless you're really good, you're going to die pretty fast in situations where your 1 v2 or 1v3. OTOH, if you stick with team mates you'll get a lot of situation where you're outnumbering other players...and either get assists, or easy kills. 5. Learn the maps and learn how to read your radar. These two are absolutely ESSENTIAL to developing the "game sense" to be able to predict where other people are going to be at a given time on the map. What are the choke points, the major traffic lanes...and the sniper sightlines (to avoid or exploit depending on your play style. 6. Play a lot. Yes.. Its that simple. You need to play PVP often to keep up with what are the current meta weapons, know the current maps well...and keep your game sense sharp. 7. Play other shooters. Weapons in Destiny have very little recoil compared to weapons in other games (to accommodate Guardian mobility). Learning how to control weapons in games where they have a lot more recoil will significantly improve your gun skills in this game. Other than playing a lot of PoEs....playing a lot of The Division and learning to control their weapons (that kick like MULES)...was one of the best things I did to improve my PVP play. Hope this helps.

    • 41 year old professional with children here. I'm not great. But this is my first video game I have ever played in life. I started Destiny just horribly. I mean terrible terrible. I did a few things to get better. 1. Moved to a BenQ monitor (27 inch) and that has made a huge improvement from a tv. Sit 4 feet away though. 2. Watch Cirriduis, TrueVanguard or RealKrafty. They are the easiest to watch as an adult. Generally very insightful And extremely good as well. 3. Play with a purpose. Don't piss around. Have a plan. For each map. Know the opponents load out s and subclasses. Scout on long maps, auto on short maps etc. 4. Don't waste supers. Be smart about yours and your enemies. 5. Heavy. Pay attention to the spawn time. Camp if you have to a bit prior and have a plan for getting to it. 6. Kontrol freeks (Galaxy version) help 7. 3 sensitivity (default) makes sniping easier and holding shots on line easier. Head shots matter! 8. Visit the crucible Reddit to have an understanding of what better players are thinking and talking about. 9. Use the meta. Don't be the cool guy using the least effective options for success. Unless you are goofing around of course. Remember that the Meta changes map to map and opponent load out as well. 10. Don't be afraid to run. Run away if your health is low. Run away if there is a 2v1. Run away if it's a hard scope lane. Live to fight another day. Hope this helps. This is what I have been doing. Why is my KD so low then you ask? Well I for one know these things but I can't always be bothered to do them after a few beers LOL. Best of luck! Hit me up on X1 if ya wanna run some.

    • 47 here, first shooter since resident evil1. Map knowledge Wep range and perks Team play( try and hang around teammates) ( assists count as well as the kills, spray everything in between killing) When hit, wait for white shield to come back before jumping back out( gets me more then all else lol) Watch the competition and how they do things, whether if their teams rushing you or solo. Listen to weps and know what's within your range( mida for 1 is very clear to hear) Most the time you can see what rushers are using, if you see shotgun and can't counter with load out, get away. Radar awareness and when otw on map if you see several teammates skulls in same area, prolly a fireteam circle jerking. Go elsewhere or flank to manipulate their radar. Most have covered this and more, these helped me a lot. Above all, have fun. Keep going, eventually the kills bring you joy and confidence to try things. Load outs don't have to be meta, realize map, adjust weps as needed. I only run 2 load outs that cover all maps. And I don't use scouts/ snipers so it's not a have to unless you choose. Good luck fellow old guardian, sometimes wisdom overrides youth and meta weps

    • Best advice is don't try so hard. The harder you try the worse you will play, you just need to try enjoy it don't put pressure on yourself and then you will start find it easier. Plus alot of the time the matches arnt balanced and lag like hell so that sucks.

    • I am 46 and though I don't have the reflexes of younger players I still enjoy playing. I think that's what it all comes down to is enjoyment. I have a difficult time because as a securities trader my eyes get tired from staring at screens all day and that carries into my nighttime play so I can't play round after round. Like you, consuming alcohol does greatly improve my play especially when I drink Lagavulin 16. Being older it's also difficult to play raids because I have no "friends" that play Destiny. I also have pain in my left elbow and I have a hard time accepting that certain people are the same age as me because, well, they look older! I can't stay up past 9:00 pm because my wife says I get "fussy" in the morning. That cuts into my play time too. I am also sick of eating hard boiled eggs for breakfast and having to plan for my death by planning my funeral, signing my will, setting up trusts so my kids can have "it all" and buying nursing home and more life insurance. I'm getting depressed.

    • I mean I'm not the best but I'm not the worst either. I'd say go with what you want to use. I went against the meta and used different weapons and I did good with them. Also don't be overly aggressive. I went 11-0 running Villany and conspiracy theory d with sunsinger. I played defensive nearly the whole time. If you're low health or see more than 2 guys, book it. Build your own subclass how you want, don't take the words of Truevanguard or Mtashed as the law

      • I do much better playing solo than when I go in with my friends. I just chalk it up to my friends being better and therefore in a higher tier of SBMM. I assume we get pitted against people closer to their skill where I stand no chance, so I just sit back and have fun and try not to die too much rather than trying to get a lot of kills (bubble titan FTW!).

          • To be honest I kinda suck too, I am 55 but I am improving, use cover better, be stealthy, And dont be in a hurry, I think the worst thing you can do is run and gun. Others wait for you to run out there and they are the ones killing you, learn the maps and learn the choke points and main paths.

Yes, always stick as a team whenever possible, of course with randoms that can be difficult..lol.. Either that or get the fastest connection on earth and laugh...Good luck and have fun

          • Always stay with your team and pick your battles; meaning if u turn a corner and there are two to three opposing guardians, and u have no team mates --- run! If u r being chased and u have a shot gun, bank a corner and kneel then shotty him as he banks it in pursuit.

          • Equip a shotgun, Blink, and chase the red dots. Never play the objective, sit back and Scout Rifle or Snipe, worry only about your KD. (Doing either of these will qualify you as "good" in this community's eyes.)

          • 1. you'd be surprised how much difference a weapon's perks and scopes make; in crucible what matters is time to kill (google it, there are spreadsheets), which usually has to include 1 to 3 head shots plus the body shots. Put 4 different pulse rifles or whatever on one player and go shoot a wall and look at recoil direction and stability. You still have to find some targets however that show you the effect of range too because damage drops off with distance. 2. I think because of SBMM if you are below average on your team for overall skill (there's a hidden ranking) you will get put into games with better opponents thus you do better when playing solo. My k/d drops at least 50% when playing on a team comprised of better players, part of that though is they kill the 'low hanging fruit' faster.

I picked a set of weapons and stuck with them, found their strengths and weakness and adjusted my game play accordingly. I prefer pulse rifles and usually carry a shotgun for that unexpected confrontation....NO I am not a shotgun camper/scrub I have WAY more primaries kills than secondary. Stick with it and play for fun, takes the pressure off LOL and guess what?........
I play better drunk as well!!!
• I am 36 so close behind you lol. Key is to know when to engage/disengage. For example, in skirmish if your two teammates are down and the enemy is near just run and regroup when they spawn. You want to avoid 1v3 1v2 situations because you will most likely lose. Try to team shot everyone. If your team are is in a fight help him. You might get the kill. Pick someone and follow them try to help them. Don't be the drifter out on your own trying to get kills.
