Funny/Annoying GameStop experience

So I needed a new XB1 controller. I drove to the nearest GameStop and told the guy behind the register I'd like to buy one. I figured it should be pretty straightforward... He said ok, talked me through the usual "would you like to sign up for xyz BS" and I said no. He wrung up the controller at which point I realized it was used, and politely said "oh sorry, I'd like a new one." He looked at me like I was crazy. He said, "it will literally be the same thing, except cost you more money." I told him I'd just prefer a new one. We went back and forth a few times, told me it would cost at least $15 more, and then he was at his last point... "Can you just please explain your thought process as to why you'd like to pay more money." As perturbed as I was, I said I simply would trust the new controller more than someone who's used one (afterall, I have plenty of used controllers that are messed up). Again the look from him like I was half retarded. He wrung up the new controller and said, "oh, it's on sale." I ended up paying just a few dollars more for it. I am a little upset I was so polite, and I now understand why people hate GameStop.

  • I actually just went there yesterday to pick up doom ($20 which is a nice price) and was surprised that the guy didn't try to sell me on anything. Jokingly asked him why he didn't give me the rockstop routine, and he looked me dead in the face and said "No one wants to buy something that we try to sell them, they want what they want and we can't force them to buy anything, so why try and make the preorder a ton of games they know nothing about. They'll go home and research and if they want it they'll come back. The store has enough adds playing so that I only have to ring them out" Something along those lines and I had so much respect, unfortunately he wasn't a manager so he probably won't be there long.

    • So rated M games have an age requirement of 17 to purchase. When Fallout 4 released I went to Gamestop to purchase a copy of the game. I was 17 at the time but when I went to buy the game the lady working said I needed my parent with me unless I was 18. Knowing that was BS, I was a little angry. What did I do? I turned around and grabbed 60$ in PSN money and told her to "ring me up." The look on that woman's face was priceless.

      • I used to work at a GameStop. If things are the same as they used to be, then that clerk was probably trying to sell you subscriptions/reservations/used whatever because his hours depend on it. Seriously, the way my store operated, the most hours would go to the person who sold the most comps. It was ridiculous.

        • The employees at my gamestop are great. Usually if there's a game I'm interested in they already have it and tell me how they like it, or tell me how much they hated it.

              • I've seen it all nearly thanks to working at gamestop. Employees at other stores and my own -blam!-ing up or pressing too hard. Customers who ask "can my son play bo3." Going into the speel of its rating and what it entails. Then saying it's and online game and how there is no offline mode for the older consoles. Only to have the customer come in two days later threatening me because I lied about the game and how she couldn't play offline. Thankfully that's how I started my sales for the game was reminding people who played it on ps3 and 360 that it was like that so my shift manager just laughed and said sorry to her. Coworkers not understanding the difference between mmo and playing a game on a computer. Coworkers getting antsy at me because I knew more about Destiny and other fps games, as well as mmos and jrpgs. But they only know Madden. It's a fun life.

              • The vast majority of Gamestops that I've been to have pretty cool employees, not just a bunch of people who play sports games. Recently, I bought OW for 30 bucks because the dude knew that I was actually polite to people.

                • I stopped going to Gamestop and just get my games digital or gamefly. When I go somewhere to buy something, that's all I want is my item I came for. I don't want to be hassled into trying to buy or pre-order 10 other different games. I know it's their job but geez....they should know it also is what makes them lose customers.

                • I don't mind the EB near me. Not a fan of them always trying to sell me something though but I'm like that with pretty much every shop. I'll tell you when I want to buy something, not the other way around. Although I did have a guy have a cry to me about how hard Dark Souls and Bloodborne are and how they're rubbish games...as I'm pre ordering Dark Souls 3.

I returned an Xbox one with 10 games, 2 wireless controllers, a stand, a kinect, and all the power cords. Gamestop gave me 3 used bandaids and half a pack of Lemon heads for it. They also threw in a zip tie as a bonus. Than they asked me if I wanted to join their rewards program.

Goes into gamestop to purchase controller, leaves with a used controller, and 5 pre orders of games you've never heard of.

                    • Eh, I haven't run into too much trouble shopping at the local GameStop, but then again, they know me on a first name basis since I tend to purchase a lot of my used games from them, so maybe that's why. 🤔

                      • I go into game stop to pick up MHG and the lady asked if I had it pre ordered it. I said no and she had something similar of a PTSD trigger trigger saying I need to pre-order every game . Then after I purchased It she asked if there was anything else I wanted to pre order. I said no and she asked if I was sure. I walked out and didn't respond.

For the current gen, I prefer new games rather than used. The same obviously goes for any other tech. So when I bought the halo 5 Xbox one about two weeks ago, along with MCC, the person tried to get me into buying the 500 gb quantum break console and then the two halo games and a hard drive. I told them no and they asked several times into the conversation again. I've been there many times before, so I am "friendly" with the staff as the two EBGAMES I go to have the same staff (as in each has their own staff that are each at their respective store) apparently working there almost everyday at the same time. Which is nice for some customers like myself. So no matter how many times I go and chat with these people when buying stuff, they always try to do stuff like that. However, it is their job to do that. I do the same at my job, so I totally get it. Just politely tell them no. However, the cashier you described seemed to be taking it a bit too far and agressive. Whenever the people at the stores I go to say that that can save 10 or 20 dollars, I just say that it is fine and that is nothing really.

                        • EB games does the same thing every time. They're main business is trading in used items, it's what they're told to do.
