Being politically correct just means you consider how your words or actions might affect those around you.
Why is this a bad thing?
-
Because certain people want it to be socially acceptable to be complete dicks without regard. Just look at how bad the Internet can be when people have some level of anonymity.

I mean it's inherently good, people shouldn't be calling people names (depending on how PC the conversation is and what words are used), but it distracts from the problem at hand; shifting the discussion from major themes like Islamic terror or negative black culture, to minor things like watching your P's and Q's. Or simply put, it's like doing anything but work when you should be working.

Edited by Britton: 7/27/2016 9:13:39 PMWhen it comes to PC, like almost literally anything else, there's a group of idiots who take it too far. But in and of itself there's nothing wrong with it. It makes for healthy and productive work places, and considering others views on things before discussing them isn't a bad thing. People have the right to say what they wish, people also have the right to react when you say something offensive towards them. It's a two way street. It plays into more than just simple anonymous interaction on the internet too. I was taught that you are your reputation. If I go around talking out of my ass then I'll develop a bad reputation. Businesses that know of that reputation won't want me because I'll be disruptive in the work place and be bad with customers, women who learn of it may be inclined to think I'm an ass and ignore me(back when I was single this did in fact make a difference), it reflects poorly on the people who raised me, the list goes on. Regardless of if you like it or not, conducting yourself in a polite and/or professional manner is an excellent habit. And don't forget tact. "Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip" -Winston Churchill It's when you have idiots pushing for legal actions over things they don't want people saying period that you have problems.

I've heard of the political correctness shit. In some cases, it's reasonable. In others, it's not. If anyone who lived during the civil rights era says "Back in my day, we weren't easily offended" Respond with "You flipped shit if a black person drank from the same water fountain".
-
Because if someone -blam!-s up you are not allowed to point out they -blam!-ed up. You cannot call a spoon a spoon. Because you are no longer allowed to celebrate certain events like Easter and Xmas. Because schools are banning "clapping" so that they don't upset other kids triggered by noise. Because they are trying to ban "guys" and "girls" from being used when addressing people. There are many reasons why.
-
It can lead to ignoring problems.

Because white males are burned at the stake for pretty much anything that resembles defending their right to criticize ironically racist or sexist groups.
-
2 RepliesBecause Political Correctness should only extend so far. You should always consider the Golden Rule ("Do unto others as you would have done to yourself") but others then feel the need to force their beliefs/doctrine on a society that is functioning perfectly fine only to turn the place into a total hugbox. It also then restricts the speech of the people, starting with the public, and ultimately the private locations. You may not always like what someone has to say, but it shouldn't be against the law to say it, so long as it's not posing a reasonable threat. For example: Against the law - publicly exclaiming that you are attempting to assassinate a public figure. Not against the law - publicly exclaiming that you don't support a certain set of ideals/rights/etc.

Mehhh I'm left sided but there is a difference between being PC and not being a dick
-
2 RepliesWell being politicaly correct used to have a meaning:- you cannot throw insults towards someone who cannot defend themselves. Ie. You can't call a mentaly handicapped person a retard. Now the meanings just got outof hand, wherein if you insult ANYONE it's labeld as political incorrect. Ie. All Muslims are terroists. Well they can defend themselves if they wish, but somehow that statement is now renderd PC.

How about just being honest?
-
-blam!- other people.
-
Because it has evolved past that into a form of censorship for people who don't like what's being said.
-
10 RepliesI agree that people should consider how their words might affect others and that that is a good thing, but people who are "pc" often tend to attempt to silence things that they just don't like to hear. Like, for example, racism is, of course, wrong. However, many "pc" people would likely attempt to silence me if I were to say something like young black males are responsible for far too many crimes considering the percentage of them in comparison to the whole of the United States. I am simply stating a truth, and yet I would be called a racist and these people would attempt to silence me.

7 Replies1. It encourages people to become spineless. 2. Freedom of speech gives me the right to say what I wish. 3. People shouldn't get so worked up over words.
-
People don't want to take accountability for what they say, and they don't want to be considerate because it's easier to be rude. It's easier to behave with a lack of self-control.
-
Why do people complain about me policing their opinions in the name of political correctness?
-
1 ReplyBecause it is against freedom of speech basically.
-
Leads to thought policing and making the newer generation wusses. I dislike it because it causes things to change for a minority, even though something is acceptable for a vast majority. Some places will say happy holidays instead of merry christmas. Wouldnt want to offend the muslims or jews. People have lost their jobs for saying things insensitive. Now, sometimes it is warranted. Especially, if it is racial comment over social media. You become part of the company you work for, and they dont want a bad image.
-
3 RepliesIt is not a bad thing , in and of itself , but once you are censoring people just because you don't like what they say , it has gone to far. Minding your p's and q' around women and children is one thing. Being told you can't have an opinion because a certain group of people disagree with it , is another. And yes I know this is a two way street. My opinion as a white heterosexual male shouldn't count more than any one else.

2 RepliesEdited by Flynn: 7/27/2016 12:05:04 PMWhat you're describing is simply being polite, which there's obviously nothing wrong with. According to Merriam-Webster, being politically correct is "conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities should be eliminated". So in one instance, you're simply being polite. In the other, you have to conform to someone else's beliefs. I think that's why people get so bent out of shape about it.

Like most things intended for social 'change' it started out innocently enough, but then it evolved into a monster of uncontrolled lunacy that does more harm than good.
