What really IS an MMO

I could be wrong but doesn't MMO by definition just mean a game that has lots players in lobby/server? Like isn't raids and all that other stuff just an RPG aspect or is that included in the MMO title?

  • It's really difficult to define specifically because games are so different now. In my opinion, MMOs are games where: 1. You're on a server with thousands of players that you can interact and do things together with. If you're in a "shard" with a handful of players, it's not an MMO. If there's no game chat (text) where you can look for other players, etc., then it isn't an MMO. 2. There's an in game economy. Most actual MMO's have an "auction house" of sorts or some kind of a trade network where loot and currency can be moved around. 3. There are raids. Not co-op content where there's a boss of some kind but a raid where there are many bosses that takes a week to get through. I'm sure there are many more reasons than this but the best way to describe it I think are to show examples of actual MMO's: WoW Star Wars: The Old Republic (not Kotor) Guild Wars Everquest ESO Games like Destiny and The Division are hybrids. The Division is closer but you still don't have that MMO feel to it as only hubs and the dark zone are shared with other players.

      • A mmo is an open world will hundreds to thousandsof players in a single server. Most of the time mmo have like 10 huge with open world. An mmo doesn't have servers with 24 people on it. The division and destiny arnt mmo. Examples of MMOs WoW Planetside 2 Club penguin (cringe) No man sky. Raids are the rpg aspect. You don't need raids to be an MMO.

WoW. Defiance. Etc. Not. I repeat, NOT Destiny. Raids are more RPG aspects, but are usually included in an MMO.
Just to summarize a more complicated answer. ^
• Well yeah. Technically games like second life were an MMO. But an MMORPG usually has a standard set by games like WoW since it was the biggest MMO ever made.

A online game where many players can play online at the same time. Usually reserved for those game where the players meet and play in a persistent gaming world where circumstances in the world change according tot he actions and decisions of others. So an arena shooter like Halo or CoD is no an MMO....despite being multiplayer and online. A game like Planetside (2) where you have a war being fought where the strategic and tactical situations shift with the result of the outcomes of major battles is why its considered an MMO-FPS. Destiny is what would be considered an "instanced" MMO-FPS. . Where the game can support millions of players playing at the same time...but limites you to about 16 players per "instance' in order to reduce the latency and processing power problems that would result from trying to animate dozens of players AND AI enemies at the same time. The Dark Zone in the Division also acts like an instanced MMO, with the number of players per server/imnstance being capped at 25. Outside of the DZ, its just another ARPG with co-op play since you'll never run into another player unless you invite them into your particular game world.

            • A very simple definition would be that its a multiplayer game where you are playing with other players in the same world without being matchmade with them. Basicly you run around an area and meet total strangers online. The actual gaming systems might be different so it is not neccesary a RPG it can be a Shooter like Destiny. It does not need raids or dungeons or whatever, just a game with above criteria that is an MMO.

              • Massive Multiplayer Online. Though the line gets blurry with titles coming out that have mmo like features without the massive amounts of players.

                    • Well an RPG can be a single player game, but a single player game can't have a raid. So raids are more of an mmo feature than anything else. Also by definition it does need a lot of people in one server to be an mmo.

All MMOs need end game content i.e raids; otherwise they are not a MMO. MMOs also need to support hundreds if not thousands of players in the same world simultaneously.

                          • My first real MMO was WoW. I could go anywhere, interact with anyone, join and leave parties without loading screens and run raids with 40 people. I never did play the FF MMORPG, but as far as things like Destiny and The Division are concerned, they are pretty weak in the "massive" category. That said, those MMO-lite games are a lot more fun from a gameplay point of view, for me anyway.
