OP in pve. Does it actually exist?

As long as I have been a gamer I have never had a problem with having a super strong weapon in pve. From the Spartan laser to the gjallarhorn to getting the cover Pokemon before you beat the elite four. Pve has always had the main achievement be being able to stomp everything in your way. You start off weak so that you can play through the game and get things that let you kill things easier. Since when has the problem been that you kill things "too quickly"? That you weapons are "too strong" I understand pvp "too strong" because no one wants to get one shot before they can react to a face to fight with an opponent But in pve how are you too strong? If you feel like you don't have a challenge then handicap yourself but don't handicap the weapons. If the problem was with people acting elite (in the forums) with elite weapons then why nerf the damage? Why not give everyone access to the weapons? It may just be my opinion but I don't think justifying nerfs by saying you're "too strong in pve" is an actual argument What do you think? Edit: holy 200+ replies. I see everyone talking about loadouts. I guess mug next question becomes if you think playing a certain way makes it too easy, why play that way? No one cares if you want to run the raid with commons because it makes it harder on you so why do you care if I make it easier for me? Isn't that my choice? User "Wittz" made a great statement
Op + pve = fun The game needs op weapons, the fights just need to be tailored so the op weapons can't always shine.
Instead of changing weapons why not change boss fights? Edit 2: after 500+ replies everyone is still talking about loadouts. I know y1 had a very powerful meta. My point is that that's what made it fun. Over powered weapons are the fuel for pve because the goal is to become more powerful. Therefore people want to chase powerful weapons. Which is the problem right now because people don't want to chase mediocre weapons. I don't think anything can be "game breaking" unless you actually mod the game. Because it was designed to be powerful, if one finds said weapon too powerful that's a personal opinion reflecting how they want to play the game.

    • You have to consider it from a design perspective. When you design mechanics to challenge players, and certain weapons break those mechanics, then that is imbalance. Gjallarhorn was an issue because its raw DPS allowed players to bypass intended difficulty, but you couldn't make things harder because that would make it impossible for players without it. Weapons like Ice Breaker and Black Hammer broke the designed ammo economy (engaging adds to recover ammo) allowing players to bypass intended mechanics.

          • Back when bosses were nothing but high DPS sponges, guns like Icebreaker, Black Hammer, and Gjallarhorn reduced what was supposed to be a drawn out battle into a 60-second boss-staggerfest.

            • If all exotics were op things like Gjallarhorn wouldn't be used exclusively. Right now most exotics are useless and that's why we stick to one exotic that is better than the rest.

                    • Black hammer was a little ridiculous but I wouldn't say over powered . Gjallarhorn destroyed everything but I think if they brought it to year two with its current nerf it might be alright. Ice breaker wasn't op but it was way to easy to abuse the infinite ammo so I think it would be fine in year two as well But nothing really seemed over powered in pve.

                      • There are Op things in PvE. No one complains because everyone can use it. Ghorn was op in PvE, which is why everyone wanted it. Would the hunters say that their golden gun is too Op? Did most Hos titans want Hos to be nerfed?

                        • while people say gally was OP in PVE this is simply not true as the mechanics for the Gally actually represented what a Heavy weapon is supposed to do, the issue was not the gally but the people without it, and i mean that in a not elietst way. the problem was simply this, the other heavy weapons could not compete with the gally causing one heavy meta to rise, had the dragons breath been like it is now more people would have used it, the same could be said of all current exotic heavys. the issue bungie had with gally was a simple one it ate through bosses like a fat kid does a Twinkie after a jog, the solution was extremely simple to address the issues with boss encounters 1) lower the amount of ammunition you can carry with heavy to 6 2) make boss heath larger to make sure people don't over rely on heavy weapons these two changes are what could have made the diffreance but since the people who did not have gally complained and LFG was no help either it was nerfed, but now we have all these other exotic weapons doing mass damage but apparently the gally was wrong to do just that......

                          • Because almost every boss in year one had the same answer. Gally. The mechanics and weapon variety did not allow for anything else if people wanted to get shit done quickly. Thankfully with TTK they actually started adding more mechanics to boss fights, and moved away from big bullet sponges. It's, sadly, the same reason why Nightsalker and Defender are the best subclasses for the raid. As much as people want to have more variety, everyone always falls back on what they believe to be the best. I love the Monte Carlo. Fave weapon in the game. But I'm never going to bring it to a raid. Same as I'm not going to use the striker subclass in one. I love running about being highly aggressive and using my melee ability a lot. Do that in any raid and you're gonna die, or the enemies will achieve their goal, forcing a wipe. So we fall back to the best, and the most boring. Because Bungie doesn't provide a good environment where every weapon and play style can work well. Bungie sees this. They see certain loadouts being used far, far more than anything else. Year one Titans? 90% of them were running the Ruin Wings as a Defender with either the VoC, or the FB, and then the Black Hammer/Found Verdict, and then the Gally. Year one Warlocks? Again, 90% were self res Sunsingers. Raid Hunters? Pretty much all Bladedancers running a cloaking setup. What does Bungie do when they see these trends? They change the meta. They try to "balance" gear to make people use more kinds of weapons. But in pve, the gear is never the problem. The level design is. How about a boss that can only be hurt through precision damage? Something like that would have had no Gally used against it. Maybe an enemy type that has a shield that sits away from the body, more like a field. Anything trying to shoot through said shield wouldn't work, but getting up close and using a shotgun/melee would. But I don't see anything like this happening. We'll keep getting similar enemies that cheat to create artificial difficulty, and Bungie will keep nerfing whatever seems to be the most appropriate weapons for general use.
