Intelligent gamers appreciate what Bungie is doing with Destiny
I have been gaming since Infidel, Ultima, Island of Kesmai, etc....Long before most of you were born. In fact, I have shoes that are older than most of you. I have played hundreds, if not thousands, of games, including almost all of the major game franchises on all of the major game platforms. Not bragging. Just stating.
What Bungie is trying to do with Destiny is not totally new, but their effort to create a tight synergy with their users and a rapid development cycle to incorporate user input is really pretty unique.
Given the resources it takes to keep support and development allocated to this approach, the real question is can they make the business model work. (Queue the silver transactions).
My feeling is that most young people these days are too petty and ignorant to notice the subtle differences between something like Destiny and Borderlands/Farcry/AssasinsCreed/WoW/Falout/Blah/Blah/Blah/Etc...
Do you notice the frequent dialog updates from the voice talent in Desitiny? "No, man, the dialog sucks, but I listen to music while I play...". Yup, our "intelligent" youth in action...
"Naw, man, game XXX is much more awesomeness". OK, how short is the path between you and the developer? Do you get weekly updates, course corrections, and tweeks? Of course you don't. Do you care?
I am not saying that Destiny is the best game I have ever played, but I do feel that its bold approach to direct player input for gameplay adaptation is hugely underappreciated, and ultimately, is the future of gaming if the business model can be worked out.
My opinion is that, sadly, Bungie is trying to sell its nascent, manual, "game AI" to an audience that simply doesnt have enough of an attention span to appreciate it.

4 RepliesI used to think this way until I read in kotaku that it takes them twelve hours to load a map for development and the 30 minutes to compile the change. This game is pretty much dead in the water - you're never going to see much in the way of new content. In fact all of the new maps from TTK were already modeled before the game was released, as far as I know the only new maps were in the prison of elders - and honestly those arenas weren't great. I'm playing fallout and I'm really wishing I could take my destiny characters and put them into that world. Destiny has the greatest gameplay of any fps I've ever played. They absolutely nailed character motion, attributes and the feel of the weapons. But that's all they have - there is nothing else there and there probably never will be. On top of that, what they've created in TTK for gear leveling is exceedingly frustrating and just not fun. I find that I never really get to play with the weapons I like and I have to spend a lot of time thinking about what to keep and what to trash. I was an extremely devoted year one player but I find myself less and less interested now. It's a shame really, after everything they've invested and everything it could have been...

I can appreciate your desire to find the good they are doing... However I disagree with most of what they have done and continue to do. They listen? The only thing they listen to are the constant cries for nerfs to the best weapons in the game. They cater to the PvP crowd, and sure are quick to patch anything that the player can enjoy. Changing the leveling system, currency & item drops at every dlc clearly shows they are doing everything possible to slow your progression. It's sad that they chose artificial methods instead of natural story line evolution. If you truly are a long time gamer you must agree, Bungie is only interested in keep players logged on. The grind is real, the are sucking the enjoyment out of the game. Destiny had so much potential. Too bad, as long as people keep defending Bungie players will continue to lose.

[/quote] On your first point: Thats a BIG if. And even if they do figure it out, what happens if people simply dont want or care about how close a line to the devs they have? Right now, we're talking about bare minimums of customer satisfaction: delivering a product that doesn't make consumers look at you funny. Sure better communication would be nice, but what meager attempts we have with Destiny ain't cutting it in the least. On your second point: Are you high? This game bet its success on people with limited attention span. Literally. The dev blogs raved about creating that '30 seconds of fun' that would make people want to keep playing. Screw story and deep gameplay, we've got '30 seconds of fun' over and over and over again. This was literally the only way Bungievision got away with shipping a minimally viable product for the first month or so. Finally, this isn't an age thing. I may be slightly younger than you with 30 years of gaming under my belt, but I found this game just as empty and monotonous as the young people you're criticizing. This is about consumers not finding enough value in the product promised and purchased. Plain damned simple. Also, buy yourself some new goddamn shoes already. Jesus.

I believe the frustration is focused among alot of these developers pushing games out before there actually ready. Destiny is great an much improved since launch however we shouldn't have had to wait I'd say a year after launch for the greatness it is now. Most games released are all nothing but shell of what there meant to be, but we'll get the patches and updates down the road. Etc, rambling continues...

The dark below - 1 Eris Morn ONLY The house of Wolves - Variks and Petra The taken king - new voice however is this just part of the content that was held back from initial launch? It seems unusual to me that they could have gotten ALL of these voice actors back for new lines. Especially when so many of them have active commitments. If you ask me, the only new dialogue for the taken king was Nolan North coming in to rewrite dinklage. Does it not seem unusual that there are missions with no dialogue whatsoever? Aside from that, I disagree with you anyway. I've played most of the games you've mentioned. Destiny can't be put in the same bracket. They game is getting destroyed from the inside out.
