I think it makes sense that the eldest son will step in. In a society like the hives' the eldest son will usually surpass the father even in power and since we will kill Oryx the son will have to take over. After the eldest son it makes sense that an angry mother/widow will have her revenge with the help of other minor hive lords. An ancient angry wife/mother can perhaps surpass her husband's and son's wrath.
