The game has an internal "skill rating" for you that corresponds to a certain comp rank, once you're at or above that rank you start to gain less and lose more.

See, I thought the SBMM and comp rank were separate. If my SBMM matches me in gold rank with someone in ascendant, how does it make sense for them to lose more than me?

Yeah the whole system's kinda questionable, imo making the ranked mode not match by rank was a mistake. I think they did it to make it so people couldn't smurf but honestly there's no reason to anyways.
