Okay, went and checked: yes, I have it completed.

Ok. What does your Invitation quest step currently say?

Well, I went back and did it over again, and it worked the second time, no issue. And on the third run, I tried to replicate the events that caused the issue in the first run, but it respawned me in the boss room, correctly. But to answer your question, the quest step still said to Defeat the vex guy in the Menagerie and loot the chest, after the first run mess-up - I couldn't turn it in until after I completed the second run.
