The crucible maps in destiny 2 are some of the worst pvp maps ive ever had to play and it comes down to a couple reasons:
1. Theyre tiny. I know the maps were made smaller compared to d1 maps due to crucible being 4v4 now, but the maps being as small as they are means that spawns flip every single death and that youre punished for being the last on your team to die in a gunfight because you are forced to run and rejoin your team just in time to watch then lose the next gunfight.
Legions gulch is a small map made even smaller due to the fact that the island where the b flag is at is never used in a non-control game because its garbage to try and fight anyone over there and the connector bridge that links it to the other 2/3 of the map has a bunch of walls blocking any good sightlines. Which means that if you want to try and use that side if the map or have any sort of long range gunfight, you have to stand on top of the bridge, in the open, hoping not to get mapped by the graviton.
2. The sightlines/overall layout of the maps are laughably bad. Practically all of the maps are circular or have to some sort of giant piece of map clutter that separates the map into tiny little sections or just cockblocks any good sightline in general. A perfect example of this is retribution, its literally a giant circle with the central connector hallway meeting point thing having pylon that blocks your view to the other side. Another example is dead cliffs. Not only is there a building that serves as a giant wall separating the map and making essentially a giant O shape, but the sightlines are purposefully put at diagonal angles of each other or are otherwise put at odd angles to make sure that the sightlines suck.
Im honestly not sure if changes like these were made to reduce the effectiveness of sniper rifles or to make the games feel more “involved”, but the only effect its had is to annoy me by making sure every time i try to have a gunfight with someone, theres a concrete pillar/random wall/bodyblocking teammate thats in my way.
3. The heavy ammo system sucks. Once either your team or the enemy team has the momentum of spawntrapping the other team going, its not hard to snowball the heavy packs to make sure that the other team never gets the chance pick it up and use it. The problem with having only two people supposed to have heavy ammo at a time means that those players have an undeniable advantage over literally every other player in the lobby. Thats why the old heavy system was better. Sure, it was an absolute free-for-all of truth rocket spam and sword fights, but thats infinitely better than trying to kill a guy and having him run up as youre shooting him and one shot you with a shotgun. At least in the old system i could counter heavy weapons with heavy weapons of my own. In d2 theres no counterplay to getting one shot when literally nothing outside of heavy ammo and some supers are able to one shot. You just have to accept death.
4. Less a reason and more of an observation, but trying to use anything that could be considered long-range weaponry feels like trying to parallel park a monster truck.

Crucible needs to go for the good of the game.

I agree that the maps are almost all tiny. They were designed with 4v4 in mind, so it's going to be an absolute nightmare when Quickplay goes to 6v6 for all games. I honestly believe that Bungie has such an enthusiastic response to Mayhem (which was more due to them having a different sandbox and more ability up-time that it was to the shear chaos of the mode) that they decided to move everything toward being more chaotic rather than putting work into refining what was already working well for the game. I wouldn't necessarily say that the sightlines are bad. They just aren't what they were in D1. We had much more open maps in D1 with sightlines that would span the entire map and allow a sniper or 2 to lock down the entire map. This would just result in extremely passive games where the other team was sometimes unable to even challenge effectively. The sightlines for new maps are much more limited and actually allow for a diverse set of gameplay options rather than passive lane shooting. The current PvP ammo economy definitely sucks. It seems that the changes coming in the Fall will correct this balance tip toward heavy play. Looks like Snipers, Fusions and Shotguns will now use "Secondary" ammo which will allow players to more readily challenge others players with OHK weapons. Hopefully, this doesn't breed the same issues of primaries being severely underpowered that there were in D1.

2 RepliesI can deal with heavy ammo being way too plentiful but my number one problem with crucible are how people are too much of a pussy to even shoot a gun. People run away and when they don't, it's only because they have a shotgun or a super. I don't play crucible to run away from people

you want snipers to rule like in BF etc? i hate sniping/camping in games so im happy its rare in destiny. im shocked at how few maps there are. surely they could have made plenty from the in-game map sections alone.

Edited by Hadriel_VII: 6/16/2018 9:31:15 AMone sentence in to your post and you start describing the perfect scenerio for greatness, as if it's a bad thing. Other than that you're right the map design. Maybe they're not poorly designed for the task at hand which is Crucible PVP. (As opposed to more traditional or world pvp) There's no other way to win the game or the match every match is pretty much death match there's a couple extra little teeny tiny stipulations but for the most part it really is just Deathmatch for the sake of death match. What used to be a short-term goal that could Define victory was the power ammo, now not so much. Though I've had minor swimingly success in comp I can't speak on it this season yet. I think what you're describing is really just a symptom of what the real problem is Crucible isn't good. It's not a sufficient Standalone PVP experience especially in the first-person shooter that supposed to be MMO light. I think what you're seeing is the limitations of the fundamental Foundation of Destiny. You're playing a game that is heavily instanced and not because of the experience it provides but instead instancing for the ease of implementation and creation of content.

16 RepliesBecause the Crucible was designed to promote (force) a very narrow play style: Mob up and team shoot with primary weapons. Halo meets Overwatch. A very crude understanding of Overwatch.
-
1 ReplyHas anyone thought that the players are actually the problem? Keep wishing and wanting things but won't just play how Bungie has designed it to be played. Smh.

PvP is cancer. This franchise would be better off without it.

Simple answer: devs incompetence

Regarding #3: Heavy Ammo spawn rate is way too frequent. There have been some games recently where I feel like I have died more to heavy ammo then to kinetic/energy weapons. There was also an instance where my team was getting smashed and I evaded a guy launching grenades at me, jumped over a guy wielding a sword only to get blown up by a rocket launcher. I camped heavy another game and ended up with 11 in the mag for my Main Ingredient. It’s overkill right now.

Edited by Forestcrunk: 6/20/2018 8:24:50 AMBring back Forge from Halo. They could have their work done for them with player created, and voted maps. My first runs through the PvP maps brought back memories of all the maps we used to Forge in Halo 3 to play on.

2 RepliesControl on Burning Shrine, idiotic.

From a cod point of view, I think they're great arena maps. But that is totally ruined because of the combat system and ttk of this game. It just doesn't work.
-
4 RepliesI'm pretty tired of this conversation. Crucible is not the way that it was. And it's changed multiple times this year. Bungie has proven that they're willing to make changes and they are working on getting it right. There is no need to post about crucible being so bad when in a few months we are getting the chance to run weapons in any slot and be able to use a bunch of weapons PEOPLE ASKED TO HAVE BACK AS AN OPTION AGAIN. Crucible will be totally different and TTK is not going to matter when special ammo will be regular and power ammo will also be in the game. This will bring crucible almost entirely back to its previous state with poor TTK on primaries, just like everyone complained.

8 RepliesEdited by TeslaDoc: 6/13/2018 8:21:44 PM1. The D2 maps aren’t smaller. A few are direct ports of D1 maps. A few are quite large. Most seem about the same size as the average D1 map. I could give you a list of small and large D1 and D2 maps if you want. People carelessly say “the D2 maps are small” but it’s not the case. 2. The lines of sight on several of the D2 maps are good enough to run as a sniper or main a scout rifle. Again, I could give you a list if you want. 3. The heavy ammunition system in D2 is vastly better than in D1. In D1 there was a “heavy phase” where all action stopped for 10 to 15 seconds while everyone crowded around a crate. Then everyone would run wild blowing stuff up for 60 seconds. Then it was all over and back to the routine game. In D2, you never know what’s around the corner.

Sorry but disagree; 1 Many are same size as D1, some are even D1 ports 2. Folks succesfully run snipes and scouts on well non lanes - some lanes are obvious so less so 3. D1 hvy ammo exonomy created hvy only phases which was considerably worse then D2 - #nod1hvyfest 4. See point 2. Cheers

Edited by TheShadow-cali: 6/14/2018 3:15:16 AMThis is what happens when a new team takes over. Besides that, the ones that had a clue moved over to 343 or other Studios.

2 RepliesSo many running away! And hiding! It encourage people to play like a pussy! Not many 1v1 gun fights!

10 RepliesThe only problems I see with pvp is imbalance; D2 was meant to slow down pvp which isn’t really a problem unless some weapons don’t match the speed of the intended gameplay. We call these weapons (graviton lance, vigilance wing, every shotgun, every rocket launcher, and every sword) op. The best solution is to reduce damage on gl, decrease stability on vw, and remove heavy from pvp or at least limit it

Bumpity bump

Yes the maps suck zero cover or sight line

10 RepliesEdited by MrMiizii: 6/13/2018 11:23:08 PMI get sick of this heavy system. I enjoy the game when we are all blasting each other with rifles and stuff. Then heavy drops, next thing you know its corner camping with shotguns, and the random rocket blast. They want a fair game? 1. Aim assist is static for everyone(doesnt matter the damn weapon) 2. The base rate of the "flinch" is the same for everyone. (This would mean that they hi-cal needs to go bye bye in the crucible). 3. Maps need more variety. Probably a hell of alot more to add but I cant think right now.

Completely agree, all D1 maps are significantly better. This maps are so boring and annoying to play on. Never once have I been like "yes I love this map". What happened to the map intros like destiny 1? Those were so cool.
