So if you've every played to the end game as a hunter you've probably heard of Pahanin, the legendary hunter that ventured into the Vault of Glass with Kabr and Preadyth. He is referenced in a handful of items, mainly the Cloak of Dregen Yor, the artifact carrying his name, and a strange collection of cloaks with terrible squid and octopus pun names. However he is most know, at least to the exotic collectors, for creating SGA, because he was so frightened to go anywhere alone after witnessing Kabr's fall.
However it's possibly that he irrational obsession with these creatures is a result of his time in the VoG. We know he was changed by watching Kabr fall and Preadyth being sent throughout time, but it is possible that he was sent to the far past as well. The book of sorrows picks up with the Traveler protecting a race of cephalopods, and Pahanin being disoriented after being warped through time, may have seen the squid people and thought he was in the future, where either humanity has lost and the squids took over or the squids helped us win the many sided war we fight against the darkness.
He most likely only saw them in the first half of the war when they were totally defeating the hive. When Pahanin came back he decided to make his cloaks to honor the supposed saviors or survivors he witnessed fight the hive.
Or maybe its a coincidence.

just an observation: harpy/gorgon/supplicants not exact, of course, but there is similarity.... "it swam back and forth through the air, spinning, the single red eye looking- I realized- for me." as i said, just an observation.

I cannot recall the source (perhaps it was Deej or another dev), but the Black Garden and parts of the Vault are supposed to evoke an underwater environment. Enter the garden and observe the plants (kelp), you will see what I mean.

22 RepliesEdited by rickylumic 77: 2/7/2017 11:23:59 PMI think there's a greater meaning. The Vex and the sea are two seemingly unrelated things that get strangely correlated.
I drank of them. It tasted like the sea.
-Vault of Glass Grimoire
radiolarian fluid
-Hobgoblin Grimoire
on your briny little thoughts
-Oryx to Quria, Book of Sorrows
my love of Cephalopods is well documented - Pahanin
- Cephalopod Cloak Radiolarian is a type of sea creature that lives very far down, about the same depth as squids. Could the correlation between Vex and the sea be that the Vex originated from radiolaria sea creatures? It would explain Pahanin's obsession with squids, which I believe are predators to radiolaria. His obsession may be a result of him trying to find a way to defeat these radiolarian Vex as squids do. Additionally it would explain why Oracles taste like sea water (according to Kabr), as they may contain it to support these radiolaria. It would also explain why the Vex mind fluid contains radiolaria, and why the mind of a Vex unit is "briny" - as it is built around salt water. This is just pure speculation but it is weird how the Vex and the sea or sea creatures get linked so often.

Is she a squid or a kid now?

Pahanin being disoriented after being warped through time, may have seen the squid people and thought he was in the future, where either humanity has lost and the squids took over or the squids helped us win the many sided war
It sounds so much weirder when you read this part out of context.

The cephlapods taught him the Universal Language

4 RepliesSo glad that you actually used lore for this post. I always think it's likely that he caught a glimpse of a cephalopod species while in the Vault, although there's no telling at what point in time they existed or if it was the same species that battled the Hive "Yes, my love for cephalopods is well-documented." "You have got to be squidding me." You have earned the respect of the Collective of Evolutionary Persons Humbly Allied to Lifeforms Obtaining Paracusal Offensive Directives for Survival (aka: CEPHALOPODS)

Im more afraid they'll ruin my MG more nowadays, he's been silent for so long...

Don't forget the Vex have Hydra, another possible sea reference.

1 ReplyWhether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather, he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank just outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right dick, we can punch through those defenses, take this bitch out and break her grip on

Edited by Drk: 2/8/2017 6:17:32 PMWhatever his obsession is, cephalopods seem to be a big part of certain races. Weather he saw them as they fought the hive or saw how they worked with the vex. They seem to have a big part in the destiny universe. I wouldn't be surprised to see a race of them in D2. An interesting idea would be this. What if the cephalopods that fought the hive created the vex. It would be logical as they did lose the war, and would need something for backup. More than likely they used their own genes to craft these creatures, since their are references to squid in their build. Most likely Pahanin was sent back to the origin of the Vex and saw how amazing their makers were.

Squid are smart creatures. Vex life "blood" is created from the DNA of squid.

1 ReplyThe Hive are also considered to be sea-related as well. It's funny that there are references to the sea but we as Guardians never get there.

3 RepliesI should start collecting those cloaks.
