As he left for a visit to his outlying districts, the jealous baron warned his pretty wife: "Do not leave the castle while I am gone, or I will punish you severely when I return!" But as the hours passed, the young baroness grew lonely, and despite her husband's warning, she decided to visit her lover, who lived in the countryside nearby. The castle was situated on an island in a wide, fast-flowing river. A drawbridge linked the island to the mainland at the narrowest point in the river. "Surely my husband will not return before me," she thought, and ordered the servant to lower the drawbridge and leave it down until she returned. After spending several pleasant hours with her lover, the baroness returned to the drawbridge, only to find it blocked by a gatemen wildly waving a long, cruel knife. "Do not attempt to cross this bridge, baroness, or I will have to kill you," he cried. "The baron ordered me to do so." Fearing for her life, the bareness returned to her lover and asked him for help. "Our relationship is only a romantic one," he said. "I will not help." The bareness then sought out a boatman on the river, explained her plight to him, and asked him to take her across the river in his boat. "I will do it but only if you can pay the fee of five marks." "But I have no money with me!" the baroness protested. "That is too bad. No money, no ride," the boatmen said flatly. Her fear growing, the baroness ran crying to the home of a friend and, after explaining her desperate situation, begged for enough money to pay the boatman his fee. "If you had not disobeyed your husband, this would not have happened," the friend said. "I will give you no money." With dawn approaching and her last resource exhausted, the baroness returned to the drawbridge in desperation, attempted to cross to the castle, and was slain by the gateman.
So, who is most responsible for the death of the Baroness? We discussed this in my political science class today and I want to know what you all think.

    •
If she had only obeyed her husband it never would have happened,
The victim blaming is real. Cheating is no excuse for murder and a wife shouldn't have to obey her husband, also the Baron kind of seems like a dick so I'm guessing you might want to have an affair if you were married to him too. I'm not saying it was a smart decision, but her death was not "her fault".

though the baron is controlling and jealous, by conventional standards, the baroness "cheated" by being unloyal and disrespectful to the vows she had (as I assume they were married, yadda yadda) so by conventional wisdom, without knowing the relationship and history of the baroness and baron and only looking at the present, it is her own fault for putting herself in the spot as a cheater and deciding to leave the castle.

        • Baroness. Only reason the Baron was pissed at her was cuz she couldn't keep her legs shut.

          • The gateman is DIRECTLY responsible since he's the one that killed her, but he was just following orders. All the same, according to political science, the Baron has plausible deniability, and everyone else was just being a douche. The Baroness screwed up, but ultimately the gateman is to blame( even though he's the only character I'm not disgusted by.)

I'm inclined to say that more than one party is at fault here. Any single different decision from any of the people here would've averted the death. The bulk of the blame could be shifted to both the Baron and the Baroness.

            • Obviously it was the drawbridge's fault. Had it not been there the Baron would not have left the castle; and if he didn't leave the castle the baroness wouldn't have left, nor would she have been able to leave because there was no drawbridge. Case in point, the phrase, "bridge over troubled water" clearing insinuates that if there is no bridge, there is no reason to go over troubled water. Add to this the fact that bridges are always fought over during wartime and frequent suicide hotspots, it is clear that bridges are inherently evil and should all be burned.

              • The Baron takes blame for being an unreasonable prick. The Baroness takes blame for not considering the reasons why the Baron told her to stay put, and ignoring his warnings. The Gateman takes blame for following shitty orders. The Lover wouldn't be able to do anything so he's in the clear. The Boatman is risking his ass to save her, so of course he wants something in return. The Friend doesn't want to risk his ass either, and has his own principles. He's a grey area. Conclusion: the lover is the only guy not to blame.

If you know there will be consequences to your actions, and you carry through on said actions the only one to blame is yourself. •The baroness was warned there would be repercussions to leaving the castle yet she left anyway. •When she tried to return she was told any attempt to reenter the castle would force the gates man to try and kill her. Her own immaturity and failure to respect the consequences of her actions is what lead to her death.

              • I'd have to say the barrenness. She left despite the baron's order. She should've seen some consequences. And, the dumb ass tried crossing despite the warning. However, literally speaking, it's the baron AND the guard's fault. The baron ordered her to be killed if she crossed and the guard literally killed her.

                • The Baroness. Baron had every right to kick that bitch out after she cheated on him and she basically threw herself onto the guard's knife. No contest.

                  • Depends really on what you consider to be the factor of accountability. Do we blame Hitler's army for the death of 6 million Jews, or blame Hitler himself for initiating the order, or (no offense, just logically had to be predicated in this situation to remain an analogue) the Jews for being Jewish? Basically only three people can be accountable for this, not the others who had indirect relationships with the baron/baroness. She would have had different lover if that lover weren't there, there would be a different friend if the other weren't there. -the baron -the baroness -the gateman The gateman is physically responsible for the death, that is a given. The baron is directly responsible for this however, because the baron gave the order. Ultimately, it is the baroness' fault. Having being previously warned to not leave, and leaving anyways, she initiated the resulting consequences. If she had not left, she would have not been killed.
