How do Hand Cannons work?

Has anyone else ever looked at the hand cannons and wondered how they fire a bullet and where the bullet comes from? I certainly have. If you look at the image that I provided you can see that the chamber does not line up with the barrel, or it does not seem to at least. This is something that has bothered me for a while now about the hand cannons (there are other hand cannons that have this problem). Now, on this forum there are plenty of intelligent people and other people that are just opinionated, either or I would enjoy to read all the different reasons that people can come up with on how the hand cannon works through this conundrum. Start your explanations, but please be nice. Edit: A few people have made comments about it being a bottom load and that being possible. That was never the problem here. The problem I have had with a few of the designs is why the cylinder and chamber do not seem to line up. Some people have said they do while others have agreed and said they do not. Since they do not line up (that is how I see it), I asked for answers. I expected or at least hoped for some out there science answers. Edit: More comments about why do I care... Why do you post here then? Anyways, I am all up for believing in technology that I cannot explain because of aliens or SCIENCE or whatever, but when the barrel and cylinder are at weird angles or as @Teuton67 noticed, certain mechanics that we CAN explain do not seem to workout on some weapon skins. THAT is when I care and ask. Besides, if you do not like my question then do not answer it and move on. You do not need to type in rude words just because you hide behind the computer. Be nice.

  • My theory started when I looked at Thorn's projectiles. Clearly those couldn't fit out of the barrel, so it must be something other than traditional ammo. Now I understand that Thorn isn't a typical handcannon, but it got me thinking. Another thing to consider is that the cylinders loaded in to handcannons are nothing like what we have today. They also don't seem to have a correct direction to load them. My theory is that the handcannons in Destiny don't fire bullets so much as they generate them as you pull the trigger, and the cylinder just holds raw material for the gun to shape each projectile as it's launched. So it wouldn't matter if the cylinder is aligned with the barrel or not and would also explain Thorn's massive projectiles. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility considering Destiny makes liberal use of space magic and super science.

    • Actually in the future ammunition is transmatted into the chamber and then shot out railgun-like at 90% of the speed of light. That's why all shots (other than rockets) appear to instantly connect with their target. The physical aesthetic of a cartridge and barrel was kept as purely cosmetic details. So while technically the ammo pack is in the cartridge you replace on reload, it doesn't have any physical connection to the firing chamber. And both are just holdovers from a history nearly forgotten. Since there was no actual engineering reason to have the barrel line up with the magazine, that part has been lost over the ages. Now rockets are a bit special. They're constructed to explode and firing them railgun style results in far too many explosions in chamber. So they are still propelled by chemical means when splash damage is required. Since they're that much more complex than dumb slugs, you can carry less in the transmat cartridge. All ammo works on principles similar to synth packs. That's why you can use the same generic archetypes (primary, special, heavy) for multiple different specific weapons. All the interesting stuff is in the gun. The ammo pack is just the go juice. Literally. The ammo packs are made of liquid nanomaterials.

There are real life revolvers with the barrel lined up with the bottom of the cylinder. The Chiappa Rhino for example has the barrel lined up with the bottom of the cylinder. Doing this helps keep the recoil more in line with the wrist of the shooter reducing muzzle lift and increasing comfort and control. Edit: As for the barrel not being lined up the cylinder, design flaw. However my guess is the cartridge you reload the hand cannons with is an energy pack, good for however many shots it was made to hold, that gets converted into kinetic force whenever the hammer hits.

        • I understand what you mean, but the way destiny designed the handcannon was to make it seem as if the bullet fires from the lowest chamber that does line up with the barrel. My opinion is that they just took the known classic revolver and tried to revamp and bring it back in a futuristic way

          • The handcannon is based on a specific type of revolver where the barrel is on the bottom to lower recoil

          • Lol, my brother and I were laughing about how odd it is they put the barrel down by the bottom cylinder on the wheel, we figured the hand cannons have the strangest firing pins ever, or the guys at bungie need to learn a bit more about the physics of bullets and firearms. It's their game, so whatever, but it still irritates me a barrel is in no way positioned in a place that makes any sense. I will say this in their defense, ever notice the wheel is not slotted for bullets? On most of the hand cannons I've used in this game, you simply exchange the entire inner cylinder instead of reloading rounds. So maybe it's just something more along the lines of mass effect with ejecting heat cartridges(?) I prefer to go with kungfu panda though- It's the dew from a single ginkgo and universe juice

            • SPACE MAGIC!!! Also a lot of the bolts and mags don't line up on pulse scout and auto rifles. Real answer, bungie needed an engineer or a weapon specialist to consult on the weapon designs. Not a bunch of devs that don't know anything about weapons
