Yeah it's pretty the same, but you don't need a maxed weapon for that

I loved my M60, got gold and maxed out all the challenges on it, but I prestiged and lost it all, cool thing was, I could always do it again and enjoyed every minute of it.

I personally like this feature and now we don't need legendary materials and can go until the last bubble only with lumen and materials(marks) , now when you see an exotic bounty that you have already done you do again for the shard, and now we can have 10 bounties, so he exotic bounty have a place
