I got suspended for having a confederate flag on my truck.....
I still don't understand why people think the flag is racist, it represents southern heritage. The school might as well become a dictatorship. Should I sue?

1 ReplyThe confederate flag is a symbol for what the south side of America in the civil war believed in. In modern society, these views on human enslavement are not taken kindly to. A more extreme example would be having a swastika on your truck.

1 ReplyIt should be illegal to have one anyway, a rebel flag is a battle standard for a group of insurrections trying to leave the union, which is illegal by the way. If you want to rep southern heritage why not just use your state's flag?

11 RepliesThe flag is a representation of slavery. If you bring the flag on school property they have the right to suspend you. If you went to court they would site Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier and attest that they have the grounds to censor you based on the grounds of the use of the school as a platform to preach controversial topics. You would loose. From a moral standpoint I think you need to consider the feelings of others. To many in the African American community the confederate flag has the same meaning as the Swastika. To a large portion of the nation the confederate flag stands for intolerance, violence, slavery and bigotry. While it may have a separate meaning for you the socially prudent thing to do would be to respectfully keep your totem at home. The flag sends a message of disrespect even if it is not your intention.

Actually i dont disagree with the schools decision; if someone went around brandishing a [url=http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law]-godwinslaw!-[/url] flag saying it represented their german heritage, or apartheid era flags ect, then it'd be equally as shameful. Fact is that was a flag used by slave owners, to fight in a war to allow them to keep black people as slaves. You may think different but thats how it is

1 ReplyAs long as it's a part of your Southern heritage, I think it's fine. But I live in rural Canada and people wear confederate flags thinking it validates them as a true redneck or some bs. One time there were some kids riding around a three seater bike with a huge Confederate flag flying off the back fender. That I find disgusting.

The supreme Court has already ruled that schools can stifle free speech if they feel it will cause a problem. So yes, you can sue, but there is already precedent and you will lose.
