You've seen the stereotypes. The "GRRL" girl, the "Yeah,-I'm-a-girl,-but-I'll-kick-your-ass" girl, the "celebugamer." While these girls do exist, hey, there're us regular-type girls who play videogames, too. Most of the gamer chicks you see promoting themselves on the internet love attention more than gaming, or are paid to adopt that stereotypical “girl gamer” persona, but what about the rest of us girls – the ones who actually play videogames? We’re stealthily walking among you like ninjas – and man, do we have a lot to hate about gaming.
1. "Well, you don't LOOK like a gamer..."
Why, because I showered? See how stereotypes feel? We’re just as varied as anyone else, but most assume we must be hideously grotesque heifers who lose controllers into the folds of our fat palms like we’re made of coconut-scented quicksand. Unless, of course, we’re wearing Fragdolls T-shirts or Zelda tramp stamps, which is the other acceptable female gamer stereotype.
We don't all wear our love for video games on our sleeves, just like we're sure you don't wear video game novelty shirts every day... right? Right?
2. Honey, we've heard them all before
So you're playing an online game, and you hear yet another prepubescent boy over your headset... but wait, that's no boy! It's a girl! So naturally, you tell her to go back to the kitchen. Funny. Slap yourself on the wrist, you bad, bad boy. Your three seconds of stand-up was only funny the first time, when the other douchebag said it six matchmaking lobbies ago. No one laughed then, either, and no one’s laughing now… probably because you sound fat.
3. We don’t always want to talk about videogames
Great, you met a girl who plays videogames – now you can ALWAYS talk about videogames with her! False. Just because we share a common interest doesn’t mean we don’t have other interests, too, and we know you also have other interests.
Guys love to dumb themselves down to ask us videogame-related questions, just for the novelty of talking to a girl about videogames. We’re not Google, asshole. And don’t condescend, there’s nothing worse. That said…
Just because we’re interested in videogames doesn’t mean we’re interested in you. Once word gets out that there’s a female gamer in the vicinity, guys lose their shit. We’re forced to leave our headsets muted when playing online to avoid the inevitable “So, do you have a boyfriend?” We wanna play the damn game, not hook up with you, k thx. Want a hook-up? Go to…
4. GameCrush
GameCrush enables male gamers to pay to play with attractive female gamers (“PlayDates”). The guys can choose to have their experience be either “flirty” or “dirty.” Ew. This kind of objectification of female gamers just furthers the idea that real female gamers don't exist, or that if they play, they must be ugly.
5. Stupid female character outfits
We realize games are largely based in fantasy, but could character designers get a little more creative with how they clothe their females? Male characters in games get tricked-out armour suits, iconic headgear (Master Chief comes to mind) and outfits that fit their surroundings. Meanwhile, female characters are left with only sashes and a smile.
6. Grrrl Gamers and anything relating to "female gaming empowerment"
Just because we're girls who enjoy spending hours in front of a TV pressing buttons, that does not mean we need to join your community, blog, Facebook group or Twitter-feed-sorority-clustershart of gaming-girl goodness. We like playing games. We are girls. These things don't necessarily need to be tied together, nor do we feel the need to have special treatment because we’re both. And if we happen to want to spend 31 hours perfecting our chopping techniques in Cooking Mama instead of having an equally enjoyable Modern Warfare 2 estrogen-fest against the boys, we shouldn't be considered less of a gamer than you.
(To clarify, everyone is different and not everyone feels this way but nevertheless this'll start a shit storm, this is some points that I personally have been feeling and if people relate then great but in no way am I stating every girl gamer thinks like this.)
If you see me playing be sure to give me a wave :3

Things guy gamers hate: 1. Girls making a big deal out of being girls.
-
Muted for being an attention whore who contradicted themselves.
-
Honestly, i generally like playing with girls more than guys because all the girls ive played with, just wanna play the game. They dont take it too seriously, they realize its a game. Not to mention, a lot less slurs and hate. Yeah there are ones iut there who are like that, but the ones ive hung out with were really cool.
-
This is the first time my immediate reaction to a "I'm a girl" post wasn't hate. you have good points. The only I disagree with is 5, it's really not as true as it used to be.
-
If you say "we just wanna play the damn game" and "we don't need to post on social media type stuff" why are you taking your time to post this in Offtopic?

This is all true but I feel like with the whole "female clothing/armor" situation, they more than likely make females look so sexually appealing because most gamers (not all) are guys and when guys see something like a hot girl that they can interact with, they are more interested in the game and that is how the dev's decide to make their money (Example: Cat Woman from Batman: Arkham City)
-
I think the term "gamer GIRL" explains the original post quite well. Most women I know, myself included, are mature enough to handle whatever happens without being offended. Just have fun people, it's called "gaming" for a reason.

Isn't the armour models something that should be left to the developers own choices?

Video game Romeo over here How did you learn all of this?

I for one could care less what gender a gamer is. To point #5 sex sells and unfortunately the target audience in many cases is teen and early 20's males. Another poster made an excellent point, the title girl gamer shouldn't exist. Just plain gamer works well for the whole group.
-
My initial thought.
-
I don't think the term "gamer girl" even should exist. There should only be casual and hardcore gamers. When a girl calls herself a "gamer girl", she's asking for attention. I mainly see the younger girls using this term, you know, the girls who are under 16 and all play CoD. Its not a bad thing thing though. Go ahead, be proud that you game, gaming is -blam!-ing awesome. But seriously ladies, don't do it so guys will flock around you like lost puppies.
-
I'm pretty sure I read the exact same thing on some article. I know for a fact I read about that game date thing. Sounds dumb. I'm not going to play a game and flirt at the same time. I play to win!
-
Ummm, I sort of missed the point of this thread. Please explain without the Man-Hate?

My top six, almost didn't compare with yours. You seem angry. 1. Don't call me cute 2. Don't hit on me 3. Don't send a random fried request because I'm a girl, and then never play with me 4. Don't underestimate my capability to understand and laugh at "male" type of jokes. 5. Don't "protect" me while I am playing. I can do it alone. 6. Lastly, DBAA. (Dontbeanasshole) lol

Edited by ClusiveC: 1/9/2015 10:07:22 PMThe game that I know the most girls in is Counter Strike 1.6 Steam version, I play in a couple servers where some girls play in, and I'm glad to say that I'm nowhere on this list. They're just everyday gamers in CS. Idk about CoD or console gaming, but I encountered a few in my Halo days. End the end, my sister says that guys start trying to impress her or some shit like that when they find out that she's a girl. That's what she hates the most, or something. I don't really play with her that much since I'm more of a computer gamer now but that's what I've heard from most girl gamers I know.

Mind if I add any of you female gamers? Just trying to make more friends and so forth plus my post I made a day or so ago has pretty much been over looked for now. It hurts but -sigh- what can you do XD Anywho I on ps4 and my name is (Cera_the_wolf) Hope to play with ya'll sometime >:3
