Overall, I'd say it was an improvement, although this film made more alterations to the source material than the first. The plot moves along at a faster pace as well, mostly for the better.

I'm wary of big alterations. But, if you say it was for the better... It's a must see for me anyway. I'm guessing 'alterations' are mainly for tonal pacing. Like the exclusion of Bombadil in The Fellowship.

The [i]pacing[/i] is mostly for the better. The effect of the alterations, like all adaptions, depends on how willing you are to accept them. These seemed to be more for adding tension to what would otherwise be a journey few consequences (until they reach the Mountain, of course).

Right... Well, I'll stop pursuing this. I want to be able to watch the movie. Ironic that I say that, I'm usually indifferent to spoilers. Yet even though I've read The Hobbit numerous times I don't want any of the movie 'spoiled'.
