In 2002 the house I was living in, at university, burned down with me trapped inside. Run through the fire and escaped out an upstairs window. Naturally I threw my mac out the window bundled in a duvet to save my coursework.
No joke.

Well in a way it was funny. I started to climb out of my bedroom window to contemplate jumping to the ground from the 1st floor, the problem was that if I jumped I would have landed on a downwards concrete staircase that led to a shut gate....... so serious injury if I jumped. So there I was, half hanging out of a window wondering if it would be less dangerous to jump or run through the house to another window. This whole situation wasn't helped by a bunch of students in the house on the opposite side of the road, who thought I was drunk and acting like a fool so they were cheering me on. It was only when the smoke started coming out from behind me that they realized that I wasn't actually hanging out of the window for drunken fun. So I ran through the fire and to my housemates room and climbed out his window onto the ledge outside and called the emergency services. The guys across the road actually let us all stay at their house that night because they felt so bad about laughing at me and cheering me on to jump. Next day we went back in the house. The top floor was utterly gutted, with weird freaky things like melted windows, surfboard silhouettes on the wall, warped vinyl records, black soot and fire damage everywhere and the freakiest thing..... my finger marks on the walls as I scrabbled blindly through the smoke as I tried to find my way to the next room to escape. The mac was fine though.
