Looking for suggested alternatives

Me and my father (his age is mid 60s) regularly play Destiny 2 on Sundays. Usually whatever story or event is prevalent, but his favorite is playing Gambit with his glaive. With the recent controversy with employees being let go, and even further back with the abysmal LightFall dlc, I've been wondering what would be good alternatives for us. Bear in mind that with his age (and some minor nuerodivergent-ism on his side, which we share) it did take a while to get him trained up on how to play Destiny 2 and I do often double check his stuff and remind him how stuff works. I've often had to ask him what quest step he was on so we don't become unsynced. So if the game suggestions have controller similarities to Destiny, that would be a massive boon. I was considering Exoprimal due to gambit similarities but that ailing player count is oof. Something competitive like but without the sweaty try hards. Even he commented how Battlefront 2 (recent one) was often too brutal. That thing beat both our butts. Warframe wouldn't work, dang thing needs it's own almanac. No way I can follow what he has or hasn't done. Maybe No Man's Sky? Make it a psuedo-startrek experience maybe? Man, this irks me, but I want to have a backup if Destiny 2 falls apart.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has couch co-op. Pretty fun. Turn based combat.

  • Lego games. No, seriously. You have to work together on puzzles and on what to do next. My wife and I play them and we're not that young. Usually we get along fine, if you ignore that time she wanted to sell me to the circus.

    • Terraria. Maybe fighting games? I do agree with whoever said Lego games. I just stream myself playing single player games to discord with my mate who told me to play them, which is fun.

    • Halo infinite is pretty fun, and the most destiny like game I've played, that isn't destiny. Not a whole lot of co op potential though. You could also play d1, if you haven't already

Division 1 & 2 Steer clear of the Dark Zone(s) and you'll avoid the sweaties. They're both probably heavily discounted, loads of game for your money, deep lore, great story (especially the first game and it's the right time of year to get started!), gear sharing, customization (transmog too) and plenty of help vids & communities out there. Yeah, Imma a fan but it's still one of your better options. I'll also recommend the Borderlands series, and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands (though the humour isn't for everyone). Love to hear what y'all end up playing.

    • I’d give Risk of Rain 2 a look. It’s a fun co-op game, and the DLC comes out on consoles in just a couple days. It is a game where you die a lot, though, so you’ve got to be okay with dying.

It might be worth venturing into different video game genres. There’s more to online gaming than just competitive shooters. Baldur’s Gate 3, for instance.

    • If you're on Xbox and not worried about getting him geared for multiplayer - The Master Chief Collection campaigns, Spartan Ops, & Fire Fight are fun to play and great stories. Even some social custom games are still very active and good for just goofing around. I'm near his age, and won't play multiplayer anymore myself. I've lost the will to compete with those same tryhards anymore. I still will play some co-op games with my son as well. Halo is all me, because I've been playing it for years. But Battlefield 2042(?) has a a solo / co-op game format as well if he likes shooters.
