A New Purpose (fanfic)

Doc walked through the streets of the town, his imposing figure towering through the streets as he strode towards the wall. What was left of it, anyways. Large swathes of it were torn to shreds by the weapons on the Fallen ships, opening wide to the plains beyond the city. Stepping through it gingerly, he saw the lifeless bodies of the guards who had been on this section of the wall, scattered like ragdolls by the blasts. He shook his head at the sight, wishing he could get one of those very large guns. Something about it just called to him. Something skittered behind him, and he swung what he had begun terming as a shock rifle towards the source. He lowered it when he saw that it was just Seeker nosing around the rubble. He shook his head as another rock slipped from its place, sending a cascade of pebbles over Seeker. "Don't you ever get tired of seeing all of these things? I mean, this rubble is just like that other rubble." Seeker looked at Doc and did his usual bob. "Well, you never know what could be under there! It could be nothing, but what if we got you one of those big guns you've been talking about?" Doc laughed. "Seeker, those things were blown up! The Fallen things got tired of getting shot down I guess. Nothing salvageable, those energy shots melted the components into a blob of metal. Outside this wall, we're free. Free to roam, to beat people up, to do anything! Besides, the ruined city is kind of oppressive." Seeker bobbed again, then floated to Doc's side grudgingly, disappointed at the end of his exploration. Doc chuckled to himself before turning back towards the plains in front of them. So much to see, so much room to move. He couldn't wait to test out this new strength of his, against rocks, and trees, and maybe even a Fallen ship, the little ones he called Skiffs. He still hadn't thought up a good name for the big ship, but he had plenty of time to think. It wasn't like the world was collapsing around him. Or... well, it was, but it seemed like a minor detail. After all, he was pretty sure he could handle himself in a fight, especially with this new strength and his not being able to die. He stepped over the rubble line, at once feeling a weight lift off of him. The empty plains stretched out, promising freedom, wandering, and time. More time than he could have ever wished for. Time to explore, to design, to have fun. He chuckled as he felt himself visibly relax. Now this he could get used to. ------- Days had passed. Doc had quickly realized the need to change his armor into something much less shoddy, so he and Seeker had worked together to change it. Now he cut an imposing figure, his large cauldrons glinting around their scuffed areas, and the horns curling down from his helmet lending him a threatening, almost demonic appearance with their black coloring. The plains really had been empty. Doc had hoped that there would be something to hold his attention, but the scenery had quickly bleed together. Nothing of interest was even hinted at. He had almost given up, when he noticed the column of smoke up ahead. Well, column was too little. A massive pillar of smoke rose in the distance, a harsh blight against the serene plains. Doc started moving more quickly, and even Seeker perked up, becoming more lively than he had been in the run of a city. He'd been unnaturally silent on the trek through the plains, but this had him in a lively mood. As they grew ever closer, Doc realized that the pillar was actually several, twisting together in a curious pattern. He started into a run, trying to get to the source. He ran harder than he ever had, desperate to see what had happened. He could only hope that it was a good thing for that much smoke to be in one place. He slide to a stop, his mouth gaping at the sight before him. What was left of a village stood before him, still aflame and smoking. People huddled on the outskirts, covered in ash. Children clung to their mothers as they sobbed, their fathers staringly sightlessly at what used to be their homes. Doc walked up to them, to do what he didn't know. They took one look at him and cowered away, afraid of him for no reason. He shook his head sadly, then looked at the village. Seeker materialized, bobbing in the air as he analyzed the damaged huts. "This was recent. The ones who did this should be close. Maybe only a few minutes away." Doc walked up to one of the few who didn't look like they were about to pass out. "Who did this? What direction did they travel?" The man looked him over, then pointed east. Doc nodded, then looked back at her. "Stay here. When I kill those responsible, I'll care for your people. We'll build a village, maybe even a city. Gather the people, put out the fires, and salvage what you can. We can make a refuge for those who have lost their homes." The man looked taken aback, but when he gestured towards the burning huts the man quickly called others as he rushed to the buildings, quickly organizing a group of men to fight the fires. Doc walked through their midst, gazing intently to where the criminals had run. He stopped when a child ran up to him, offering a small black pendant with a red teardrop on it. "For luck" the little girl whispered before she disappeared. Doc looked down at it, then slipped it around his neck. He trekked east, following the clear tracks. Within just a few minutes he had found the brigands. Their leader stood tall among them, with a confidence and grace in his slight but armored figure. Doc could almost taste the arrogance he exuded. He increased his pace, the steady clump of his feet alerting the men closest to him. They stood straighter, aiming their rifles at him as he neared. One of the braver ones stepped forward. "What business do you have with those of Warlord Rendar's camp?" Doc stopped, his cape swirling in the slight wind. "I'd like to speak to this 'Warlord Rendar'. Perhaps he can set matters right." The man shifted, looking suspiciously at Doc's armor and weaponry. He was about to say something when the leader of the group stepped past him in one fluid motion. "I am Warlord Rendar. Who are you to speak so dismissively of me?" "You are the ones who raided that village back there, correct?" Rendar visibly tensed, his hand gripping his gun tighter. "Yes. These lands are mine, and as such I have a right to what they hold." Doc shook his head. "No longer. You will cease these actions, or face the consequences." Rendar laughed, then drew his gun and emptied it into Doc's chest. He stepped back when he realized that it had done nothing to his target. "Who are you?" Doc stepped forward and grabbed his throat. "A Titan of death, of justice." He quickly crushed Rendar's throat, tossing the corpse aside. Then he started in shock, as a Ghost appeared. He quickly snagged it, smashing it between his fists. Seeker appeared, looking over the dead Ghost. "Why did you do that?" Doc paused, thinking. "This was like you. It brings people back. It would have brought him back. And we can't have that." The Titan looked at the shards in his hands, then over at the corpse. "No resurrections this time."
