Deleting it removes everything from public view, locking it ends the conversation but allows the narrative to be shown. A poster could claim the deleted thread said anything so it is done on more rare occasions.

I get that possibility. But locking is controlling the narrative and leaving it for public judgement. Deleting is deleting. Neither are good are they? Which is my point. Unless it's something obvious like explicit sexual content or an actual threat etc, it should be left alone.
