I was playing with one of my friends the other day who hasn't played in a long time, and while we were playing he was inspecting his gear looked over at the infusion option and said "what's an enhancement core?"
I have sincere worries about bringing new players into D2 when the year 1 content becomes free to play. It will be hard to have a new player who was curious, but not necessarily interested in the series to keep playing when they have to abandon a cool weapon because they won't have the resources to upgrade that weapon's attack power.
Yes they do have avenues to obtain cores in the form of masterworked leviathan gear, gunsmith bounties, and a rare chance from dismantling weapons. But 2 of those 3 avenues require a player to want to play the game enough to go down those routes...
My point is even though some of us (including me) have plenty of cores, they could be a turn off for new players come September.
TL:DR New players good. Cores bad.
Edit: I made this post because my entire friends list had said that they will play this game when it becomes free to play but one of my friends who played this game became disappointed BECAUSE he had to leave his favorite guns behind practically every 5 power levels. He hasn't played the game since he mentioned it. And another friend quit because his 2 favorite year 2 weapons require cores he doesn't have. So I know that this topic will be a determining factor into their interest in playing this game.
I know that my friends would enjoy this game, but I don't want them to have this steep price to play how you want. Especially when they play other games that don't demand steep sacrifices early-ish in their time playing.
And I AM NOT calling for enhancement cores to be removed, they are simply just a steep asking price for newer players (who would only have 2 or 3 free methods to obtain them) to use their favorite gear. And for those saying they make using gear a meaningful choice. Yes they do kind of. They flow like water for people who know how to farm them and play the game a good amount already and are as scarce as copper for new players. Yes I understand it won't be a problem for them in TIME. But that's way after their first impression has settled.
If there was a workaround to where newer players could not be turned off while still providing a meaningful choice for infusion I believe many players would be satisfied. (Perhaps reducing the core cost to 1 or 2 while doubling, tripling, or even quadrupling the glimmer cost since that would still limit infusions but make infusion more pertinent to time invested rather than luck.)

Give it up

I had started new on pc and by the time my character was ready to infuse anything I had over 100 cores, so it is the same as the current players, it is all in how you play the game.

For some context, I just came back to the game about a week ago after quitting a year and a half ago (according to the clan I was in with a few friends, I stopped playing on Dec. 17, 2017) and I am having no issues with cores for a few different reasons. 1) I love trying out new weapons and I use the Light Level as an excuse to try all sorts of different armor and weapons as I creep towards cap (which means I very rarely use cores) 2) I spend a few cores to masterwork a great weapon I find so I can infuse later 3) If I wanna go run a nightfall or do a raid I will pull some gear that I have saved that was good while leveling and infuse to the light level 4) I run all dailies and weeklies I can whenever I get on, which includes pursuits that give cores, but I only play 3-4 days a week because I work 12 hours a day 5) Because I do not play every day I find it easier to infuse stuff when I want since I always have dailies and weeklies to finish that just give me more As a couple people already mentioned, this is a RPG with mmo elements, so it is obvious to the average person that there will be grinding involved to level up. All I have seen in these posts is people whining for a reason they created. When leveling up in a gear based rpg you are not supposed to have the strongest gear until you reach endgame anyways. To all these complaining kids, stop whining and start grinding, or get out. P.S. I never said I was a nice person :D

This was only true before they added the Gunsmith bounties. Literally no excuses left. You want cores, you do the bounties. They are the easiest bounties in the game...

Edited by W33DEDPLAGUE: 6/22/2019 8:18:00 PMI think there is a lot to consider when deciding to change the plan of your franchise in such a huge manner. I'm pretty sure Bungie has thought about these type of things and it will not be the same game come shadowkeep. Armor is already shown to be completely reworked and I'm sure that's not the only thing. They will have to think about a lot of systems, materials, and inventory stuff when going free to play like that.

No one is getting new light because Modern Warfare will kill this game.

Edited by Shrike22498: 6/22/2019 7:19:51 PMWell warframe does very well and the grind in destiny is nothing compared to warframe, a d that has about 5x the. Onthly players of D2. Just sayin...

Edited by vl FReAK lv: 6/22/2019 6:47:26 PMIt does suck having to infuse with cores....but i dont understand why everyone finds it hard to get them. I get about 20+a week. I do think they need to lower the cost to just 1 core though. But also make it change a perk from the infused weapon/gear or something if they are gonna keep the 2+ core charge to infuse.
-
I agree. Bungie will probably have a consumable "Chores are done Mom" that gives New Light players 1,000 cores.
-
Funny thing is, you can grind like you are supposed to and get a good amount of them for that week. New players can learn the hard way of overusing a resource

-
Since they can be easily obtained no they will not
-
I just want my friends to play too.
-
New players have no need for cores until you get to end game.
-
That's the way it's meant to be. If you're stupid, you'll have a hard time.
-
So new players will have to play the game to infuse their gear. I don't see how that would turn them off.
-
Cores are fine
-
It’ll hurt till they get to the soft cap which is 50 levels below max light. If they are smart they won’t infuse every piece of gear or masterwork a mediocre piece of gear
-
Nope. new people wont be stupid enough to infuse anything that isn't more than +5 at the very least, they'll just slap on new gear over and over. Won't be a problem at all.
-
Not immediately ( so it won’t become an over night issue ), but it is something they will come up against sooner than later.
-
So you're saying they'll need to make meaningful decisions about what to infuse?
-
If you've got your buddies into the game, get them on banshee bounties the second they start playing. They're completed passively, it's not ideal but it's not awful.
-
Edited by Xero: 6/22/2019 5:21:13 PMAt this stage, they are staying, lest they get replaced with something that has equal "difficulty" for lack of a better word. So if they can't be removed, what else can be done? Ease of accessibility should come to mind. The Banshee bounties are good to look into, I think they should be more passive as a whole. I'd rather see calibration bounties for 1 core for every weapon type per week, that's it. Character based. Everything else core wise minus clan rewards is gone. Gives incentive to use other weapons, gives easier incentive to want to earn cores regularly. That's huge. A fixed number to earn, not random. Keep the clan reward as is or bump it up a tiny bit, so there is still incentive to join one and participate in that. Players feel a sense of control and ease when customizing weapons and armor, it encourages some old and new players to come back. Core problem solved, unless the costs get changed to something ridiculous...it should give NO reason to run out of cores for use. It should also encourage secondary and tertiary character use as well, which should increase overall play time and.....well you get the picture.
-
When you are talking to the new players don't just slam the way the Cores work and try to run them off. Remember to let them know that it is possible to raise the power level of a weapon using only Glimmer. ;) Also let them know to be sure and compare the perks. The newer, higher power weapon might be a better fit and would save them 5k Glimmer.

Pretty sure that one of the things about New Light is that they'll start at 750, so they'll only have to grind if they buy Shadowkeep, so if they make a small stockpile via dismantling as they play through the free campaign before joining Shadowkeep, then they should be fine
