Enhancement cores are going to hurt new light players.

I was playing with one of my friends the other day who hasn't played in a long time, and while we were playing he was inspecting his gear looked over at the infusion option and said "what's an enhancement core?" I have sincere worries about bringing new players into D2 when the year 1 content becomes free to play. It will be hard to have a new player who was curious, but not necessarily interested in the series to keep playing when they have to abandon a cool weapon because they won't have the resources to upgrade that weapon's attack power. Yes they do have avenues to obtain cores in the form of masterworked leviathan gear, gunsmith bounties, and a rare chance from dismantling weapons. But 2 of those 3 avenues require a player to want to play the game enough to go down those routes... My point is even though some of us (including me) have plenty of cores, they could be a turn off for new players come September. TL:DR New players good. Cores bad. Edit: I made this post because my entire friends list had said that they will play this game when it becomes free to play but one of my friends who played this game became disappointed BECAUSE he had to leave his favorite guns behind practically every 5 power levels. He hasn't played the game since he mentioned it. And another friend quit because his 2 favorite year 2 weapons require cores he doesn't have. So I know that this topic will be a determining factor into their interest in playing this game. I know that my friends would enjoy this game, but I don't want them to have this steep price to play how you want. Especially when they play other games that don't demand steep sacrifices early-ish in their time playing. And I AM NOT calling for enhancement cores to be removed, they are simply just a steep asking price for newer players (who would only have 2 or 3 free methods to obtain them) to use their favorite gear. And for those saying they make using gear a meaningful choice. Yes they do kind of. They flow like water for people who know how to farm them and play the game a good amount already and are as scarce as copper for new players. Yes I understand it won't be a problem for them in TIME. But that's way after their first impression has settled. If there was a workaround to where newer players could not be turned off while still providing a meaningful choice for infusion I believe many players would be satisfied. (Perhaps reducing the core cost to 1 or 2 while doubling, tripling, or even quadrupling the glimmer cost since that would still limit infusions but make infusion more pertinent to time invested rather than luck.)

  • Have to remember that all us year one players had it so easy back in the day with masterworking and all that. The biggest grind we ever had was heroic public events for exotic drops. Even though it’s free, the climb for new players will be so big, and they don’t have an inter seasonal stockpile of resources like we do.

    • They will probably give the player a package of them with explicit instructions on what to do with them, and how to get them from that point forward. Idk though.

    • Let me think for a minute on how much I care about people getting the game for free finding something difficult therein. .. On a serious note I think most of them will have no problem with it, because they'll figure it out. The y won't know any different. 23 cores a week from Banshee just by shooting enemies in all activities? Available as soon as the Tower is unlocked? Better than what we started with. The only people having a problem with it now are the ones that still refuse to adapt after 10 months. I've just joined another clan and have played with about 30 people so far over the last 2 weeks. Literally the closest I've come to someone having a problem with cores is "damn! I forgot to pick up the core bounties today" as we launch into an activity.

I'm trying to agree with this but I get more cores per day than I spend just by playing, dismantling, buying 3 daily from Spider and bounties. I even re-purchased a Recluse and infused it, got almost all them cores back before I stopped playing. I infuse daily and have over 830 cores, I had 750 at the start of the season. Have 3 750 toons also. Seems we no longer get 7 cores for clan bounty or at least I didn't. Bungie should attach cores to Spiders powerful bounty, say 5 per bounty per toon to replace clan core reward. I have absolutely no reason to do Spiders power bounty now I'm 750 and I haven't done it for a while, would be nice to have a reason to do it. I currently visit Tangled Shore for 3 minuter a day to purchase 3 cores then leave

      • Wouldn't increasing the glimmer cost that much also affect new players in a negative way? I didn't keep track of quickly my glimmer was increasing but i don't think that would be the best solution.

      • I think having enhancement cores as a possible reward from the Weekly Nightfall or even any of the Daily Challenges, either as a replacement for powerful gear or as a bonus with the powerful gear would help players, especially newer ones, with having more cores to spend. Much like how Strange Coins worked in Destiny 1. Also, I think once the character has reached max power for the season, 750 for right now, that enhancement cores should pretty much be guaranteed as a drop from the Weekly Nightfall. It could drop anywhere from 10 to 20 cores, for example. Doing dailies could drop 3 cores per completion as a bonus to powerful gear as well.

      • Enhancement cores are just one of many reasons I quit playing the game. Forum mods behaving like Nawtzees is another. Its hard to see why these cores are still an issue. I gave away my console and gamertag last November and the kid I gave it too just gave up on the game too. I do not see a lot of 'new' players coming to D2.

          • Idk, the ability to get a consistent 5 a day isn't too bad....although I still wish enhancement cores were only used for masterworking weapons and armor.

Couldn’t agree more for infusion it’s just dumb I have butt loads of cores it doesn’t affect me but for new players it will be a barrier for entry bungie don’t want that and I don’t want that new blood more people playing is what we all want make it shards glimmer and plant stuff that’s enuf of a grind for new players that the can’t just change constantly but enuf to keep them engaged

I’m not disputing any of this and I agree they should be removed, but this has helped ease the pain: 3 from daily bounties 1 from weekly (the one that isn’t the three activity one, which is usually easy), 3 from spider = 6 per day x 7 + 1. That’s 43 per week from incredibly easy sources, on one character. With just that you can masterwork two weapons per week (I don’t masterwork armor so that’s not really something I worry about), and have cores left over. It’s not making an excuse for this system but at least it takes the edge off a little bit. And if you’re really worried about players being turned off by anything, there are so many other little pains that will drive players crazy after the initial buzz wears off. It’s a death of a thousand cuts with Destiny.

              • Y'know, I remember Bungie saying something like look how you want to look in the Shadowkeep ViDoc...would be a perfect time to just ditch the cores

I still don’t understand why a currency used to do something rare like masterwork an item is also used just to infuse an item to a relevant light level. There’s already like three other currencies needed for it.

              • Cores are super easy to get now. Doing the 3 bounties each day on all 3 characters takes max 30 mins. You get 9 cores and 18 mod components. So long as you don't infuse every bit of gear you get that is ok and pick what you want you won't run out. Not to mention once at max light every 2 days you can masterwork another weapon. In one month of playing you can have a character with 2 full sets of masterwork armour and 10 masterworked weapons. There is basically no problems with cores now. (Not to mention cores you get from spider or from dismantling random gear you get)

Was at my cap of 399 light one week in and I have got my hunter to 711, had 200 core to begin never infused anything and have over 250 just one the quest lines and I still have over 200 items to delete I’m sure vault full just from one character.

                    • I think a fairly simple fix for this would be for Bungie to give all New Light players a package containing 100 of each materials. I know this sounds like an incredibly easy fix to this problem so I'm not expecting it to be implimented 🤦‍♂️

                    • Your points are fine/valid but Bungie has stated the game will no longer be focusing on the normal casual playerbase and instead focus on those that want the game to be their hobby.

                      • Simply put the ability to masterwork is the only place enhancement cores should be required. This would solve everything. You should pay to be able to access full game. So master-working is a function of that. Besides Bungie said themselves, friends playing free have access to everything in DLC. Another words why buy and expansions, they are free to all. Including core system.

                        • You make some valid points and i agree that cores must be removed from infusion but, Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather, he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank just outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold

Get your free game and light level and quit complaining about the cores. You shouldn’t have the whole blaming game handed to you. When the rest of us had to earn it. It’s so easy now for a new player. Make them go through a few trials and tribulations like the rest of us had to.
