•
Norway = Socialist
Private industry still makes up a majority of contribution to GDP, Norway has private property law, and very much relies on a market economy. No socialist worth their salt would consider it a socialist country, as those traits are explicitly not socialist. Sure, oil money can buy a nice welfare state for a handful of decades, but ultimately that's not continuously sustainable.
Zimbabwe = Capitalist
Odd choice, in comparison to your socialist example. Zimbabwe has a pretty high tax rate for private enterprise, heavy regulation, and to top it off, government spending is at over 2/3 GDP. Here's some comparative data, it's pretty interesting: http://www.heritage.org/index/visualize?cnts=zimbabwe%7Cnorway&src=country Given that capitalism is the combination of private property and a market economy, Norway is arguably more capitalist than Zimbabwe.

  • Who gives a shit? Where would you rather live, Zimbabwe, where you need a wheelbarrow of cash to buy some cigarettes, or Norway, where you get 6 months off just for having a kid?

  • Here's some comparative data for Ethiopia and Sweden: http://www.heritage.org/index/visualize?cnts=ethiopia%7Csweden&src=country#top Similar results to the previous comparison, but this one seems to be even more uniform.

  • Venezuela's just a banana republic. Countries with strong institutions who adopt socialist policies do it well. Its easy to point out the basket cases, but look at where successful countries adopt socialist policies and its obvious they can work. Our last socialist government built like 40% of the housing stock that's still available today, and gave us free healthcare to everyone which again is still around today. You don't have to become a stalinist dictatorship to adopt socialist policies and if they don't work, who gives a shit, as long as your democratic institutions are strong you can overturn them.

  • So it's ok to massively -blam!- things up as long as you say sorry and try to fix it in the end? Wewt!

    Well why don't you ask people who lost their jobs due to seattle raising the minimum wage Or even better ask the family of the greek man who killed himself when Europes little socialist eutopia had a hiccup that made it so he couldn't provide for himself?

  • What Greek man? What are you even talking about? Honestly, why would I give a fck about some random guy who decided to top himself compared to the millions of lives that have been saved over the last 70 years as a result of socialist healthcare policies? Pick and choose mate, don't let your ideologies get in the way of pragmatism. Europe is by no means a utopia, but don't discount the good things out of blind political loyalty. For the average joe, quality of life is a lot better in Western Europe than it is in the US. Socialism in developed countries just means pumping some more money into the economy, you can keep waiting for the private sector to do it, but its not gonna happen.

  • It has not saved millions. I'm sorry to tell you this but just because people are alive in socialist countries doesn't mean they wouldn't have been able to actually take care of themselves in a capitalist one. But hey let's all put out trust in this one thing, it'll be too big to fail if we do that. Oh wait...

  • You seem to be missing the point. I live in the United Kingdom. We elected a socialist government in 1946. They established the National Health Service. They were voted out in 1951, but the NHS remained. In the 70 years since that happened, countless millions of lives have been saved in the UK, while maintaining a general quality of life equivocal to any other developed nation. rgo, socialists policies can work if they're implemented in a society with the institutional strength to accept mistakes. Your mistake is equivocating socialism with the extremes, Stalinist Russia, Venezuela etc. and being ignorant of the many places in the developed world where socialist leaning governments have implemented policies that have significantly enhanced the quality of life of the people living there.

  • Again the government taking your money to pay for your treatment doesn't mean they "saved" you.

  • Not me, others. And as I'm not entirely selfish that's fine with me.
